Although farming is yet in its infancy, thousands of bushels of wheat were last fall shipped to St. Louis and (hicago, where Nebraska wheat sold at the highest market prices. The millions of bush- els of corn consumed by the army on the Plains and the nop-producing mining Territories are chiefly raised here. Nebraska 1s the naturai feeder of these mining territories, and the farmer thereby is generally enabled to get highest prices in the West. It is but a ago since I accompanied the govern- ment commissioners on an excursion over the first forty miles west of Omaha. To-day regular trains run to North Platte, 290 miles west, and the road is completed 15 miles beyond that point. Over 250 miles have been built In twelve months, including a Howe truss bridgo 1,605 teet long across’ the Loup fork, and a pile bridge 2,640 feet long across the North fork of the Platte, This To thls might be added these three suvgestions:—Too much lenity has been shown Indians after capture; too many have been captured; and, after a battle in which the troops have been the victors, the retreating Indians have not been followed up with vigor. Within the limiteof New Mexico there are probably 2,000 Comanches, 2,000 Mimbres, Mogollen and Mesca- lero Apaches, 1,500 Utes and Apaches at Cimmaron, 2,500 Capote and Wamenunche Utes ‘at Abiquiu, 7,000 Navajoes at the Bosque and 2,000 at large—making a total of, say, 17,000 souls; among whom we may safely calculate there are 4,000 warriors, who would be a groat acqnisition to any body of Indians that might open the ball There are also a large number of fighting Apaches in the eastern part of Arizopa, who could be relied upon to fight against the whites, They are constantly commit- ting depredations on travellers and eettlers It isa fact known to those familiar with life on the plaing, that almost every tribe has a m of bntiding its lodges different from that of any other tribe, and each tribe also has a style peculiar to itself for building fires in the lodges, Tho Comanche Indges are built of poles mm the shape of a cone, covered with buffalo hides. Tho poles are fastened with withes at the top. ‘The Witchita lodges are built the same as the Comanche, save that a hole is left at the top for the smoke to pass through, This, when covered, forms the frostrum of a cone, The Kickapoos place the poles in a circle, like the Comanches; but instead of bringing them to a point at the top, bend them go as to unite in an arch with those endorse the sentiments of the Press.
