FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Weonrsnay, Dec. 26-6 P. M. The railway sbare market opened with @ buoyant tone this morning, aud there was a goneral advance upon the elosing prices of Monday, but the improve- ‘Ment was not sustained, owing to sales to realize and a yesumption of the bammering operations of tho bears, All the leading stocks are so largely oversold that it is of vital importance to the latter that prices should be kept down while they are ‘covering’ their contracts, and it is a mere question of strength between the con- tonding parties as to which is victorious. Stocks are in- ‘triusically cheap at the present quotations, and ‘She rebound from the prevailing depression must be ery strong. ‘The bears have been assisted to-day by a fndiner degline in gold, the result of heavy “bear” ope- rations, mainly by partios interested in a decline in stocks, but the premium has now touched such a low point thatasharp turn in it cannot be lng delayed, and those who suppose that the decline is likely to be permanont wil therefore find themselves mistaken. It will be remembered that the premium declined to 284¢ in May, 1865, immediately after the termination of the war, and yet rose to 683; in June last, the average in the dnterval having been much higher than the point re- ferred to. Yet when gold od 12834 the speculators mud tho public said it was going, much lower; ‘with how much forethought all know; and it is the same ‘now aa then, ‘The decline to-day was from 1334 at the ‘opening to 181%. There was a subsequent rally to 132%, and the closing price was 1317{, ‘The steamer Oubs took ‘dut $389,656 in specie, There wasa rather brisk borrow. fag demand and loans were made ‘fat and at 1-32 per ceut in favor of the tender. Tre following statement shows the total amount of gold certificates teeyed ‘and redeemed by the Sub- Treasury and the amount outatanding:— “Total issued. Total redeemed, Outstanding. This i# « strategic performance influenced by purely speculative motives and levelled against the natural courae of the markets for both monoy and stocks, It can ‘herefore work only a transient result, and decided ense mast follow, The drain froin tho Weet continues and that to the ‘South ves nearly subsided, and on the 24 of Jan- uary the disbursements of dividends by the banks, insmance and ¢ther companies, will commence, : welling the amount of mony In the open market, while on the 15th of January the setal-aunual interest the chind aeries of tho soven-thirty loan will become ‘Yhe discount line is very dull and commercal w Dot in request, owing to lenders being able to eniploy thelr money in loans returnable at call.
