Another Tenement House on Vire—Nerraw Escape of the Inmates—One Child Missing. About half-past one o'clock this morning o fire broke out im the four story tenement house, rear of No. 19 Elizabeth street. It originated in the cellar, and spread rapidly to the upper stories, Thore were in the building eight families, all of whom were rescued from the build- ing by the police and some citizons. Several wore nearly suffocated, and had to be carried out, A little child four years old, waa reported missing. The fire- men were early on the spot, and after a short time con- fined the flames to the building. The inmates of the two adjoining tenement: houses had a narrow esceps, 60 dense was the smoke at the tim: Terrible Disaster in Memphis—Fourtoed Per+ sons Smothered to Death. Mexruts, Dec. 19, 1866. A terrible calamity occurred bere this morning. The eonfectionery establishment of Joseph Specht, No, 86 Madison siront, took fre between three and four o'clock. About twenty-five persous wore asleep in the third and fourth stories of the building. The fire, which origt- nated in the collar from some unknown cause, filled the ‘upper stories with emoke and the fumes of burning charcoal, while the flames in part cut off ogress by the stairs, Fourteen persons wore suffocated in their rooms or Jost their lives in attempting to escape by leaping from the windows, ‘The killed were as follows :—Wm. Jehle and wife, the lattor a daughter of Mr. Specht, both suffocated; Wm, C. Honke, killed by leaping from a window; Frank Ru- dolhulber, a German pastrycook; Mucinda Ringwold, colored, and two children; a German cook named Philip; Polly Filnt, colored; John Gorman, confectionor; Fred. A. French, cook; one white and one colored man, both waiters, and a colored woman—names not known. An infant child of Mr. and Mra, Jeble was found alive in the room with them, the only one saved of those re- matning in the room. Mr. Specht raved himself by tying curtains together and climbing down the balustrade on the second story. Joseph Barthol Jumped from the fourth story into a mudhole in the alley and saved bis life, Mr. Walter and clerk leaped from the fourth story and caught on a win- dow shutter of the third story, whore they hold them. selves until rescued by the firemen.
