AMUSEMENTS. Brondway Thentre. The simple announcement that Mr Davenport was to appear last evening on the occasion of his benofit as Hamlet should have had the effect of drawing an over- crowded house; but for some unaccountable canse the attendance was only respectable in extent, althouge the appreciation manifested for the artist took the form of an ovation of unbounded applause. Although the tragedy was well cast and performed smoothly and well, without a halt or break in any linc or scene, the subsidiary parts were overshadowed more completely than ever by the unusual virtnes manifested by the Hamlet of the ovening. Mr. Davenport's Hamlet ts fn ita main points peculiarly original and characteristic of his cultivated style of ren- dition. Unlike most of his contemporaries, he draws a palpably plain line ot demarcation between the first two ‘and the succeeding acts of the play. According to his conception the noble Dane dors not burst upon us in the first scene “gtark stariny mad,” as if he had been so born; but at firet appears a morose, meditative, gloomy brooder over deep mysteries and {ll defined imacinings of a mind opprossed by a weight of thought beyond its powers. Represented thus far advanced towards insanity, and no further, Hamtet, in the person of Mr. Davenport, listens in awe to the first breathings of suspicion in the tale of the ghost. From this point the madness of the subject begins to erow until the second stage ts reached in the third act, where, in the s-enes with the King and Queen, it reaches its grand climactic of fully developed madness; and thence the fire of the subject rmonlders ys Caen firmly into constant. hope'ess ree phases, in which Mr. Davenport are most artistl. are 80 tanto. fine mod. ulations and graces of action as to add to the enact. ment the additional marit of equal and consistent beauty throughout. In thie act Mr. Davenport's Hamlet eapecially shines, Ita characteratios are promptness of passion, plansibility of emotion, effectiveness in its transition moods, aud an artistic culmination potnt of overwhel: ing rage and sardonic invective. In the succeeding acts the performance is quiet, moody, reflective, but never doll, the uraveyard scene being especially interesting from its positive merits. Perhaps the most admirable point to be remarked in Mr. Davenport's rendition ts that he nover once playa to the 1% “3. or recarda its , gniding himseif only bis own con- and conscientiously Zanering to hie rule ‘Of action, withont the least straining after unnsual ap- probation. English bluff, hearty yeoman spirit in it, and it ig more akin to the tastes of our perute:« than the hygrad they have been on served with. Besides, the vocal programme of @ concert would be far more inter- — if, instead of having the same unvaried round of soios, with a Sapeaicnne tuek ce hes ors Bary Bd we had English concerted music for three, fou voices. In England there aro glee and maicigal clube in, in every city, and their terse, simple, healthfol, bigh- souled is welcome where even the best music of the German and Italian schools is coldly received. What can be more congenial to an American audience than the gices of Bishop, Arnold, Calcott, Parry and Hatton, in which every sentiment 1s expressed in that terse, vigor- ons style so characteristic of the English language it- self? Such a want is about to be sup- pied by Dr. Cutler's admirable Cecilan choir of one undred male voices. The diffleulty experienced before bringing out this species of music, was the scarcity of male altoa in this country. American voices as a general tule frequently turn to alto with females, and to bari- tone with men, and as English concerted musifeannot bo well sung by mixed voices it was extremely difficult to procure the necessary materials for it, The introdac- tion of boys obviates this difficulty. Their clear, fresh young voices blend with the tenors and baskes of their oldera as if a polyphon'c chord waastrack on some mighty organ. They have triumphantly asserted their superi- ority over mixed voices in oratorio, and we doubt not that thev will be cqually successful in their new enter- prise. Fugue movements, those necessary ingredients in English concerted music, are frequently marred and rendered unintelligible by the want of unity in each part. This ts observable in mixed choruses. With ove trained ag the Cecilian choir has been each part of the fugue is a distinct, clearly defined picture in itsolf On Wednesday next tho Cecilians will make their first appearance in secular music in conjunction with the eelvbrated Richard Coker. This will be a pre paratory step to the initiation of gles, madrigals, rounds, catches, &c., at Stoinway Hall. In connection with this masic we would suggest that room be made at our con- carts for the compositions of American artists, many of which deserve a better fate than the obscurity in which they have hitherts lain. ‘The infasion of the Anglo- Saxon element in music will give it a healthful tone and set off the exceltencies of the other schools in a stronger light, We want a programme to be like a well arranged Donanets varied and adorned with gems from every 6 THE STATE CAPITAL.
