Tho only “old machine” about it is Craig, the late agen! of the association, who has been dismissed from t's s:r » because of his incompetency and wir cuit y. This Craig was the rotten part ot (he “oldemachine,’ and the greatest folly of Which the Associated Press has ever bdon 8 the folly of not having sooner inrn im adrijt. So the papers that make this outery beve, in tact, only got the “old machine,” which is Craig him- self, and are excluded from the henefils of the ‘New York Associated Press under iis new and Management, with its energy, enter- «, prise and efficiency renewed and increased having abolished Craig and all tho other nuisances ani abuses that had grown up *« under him, ' The National Babks and the Carreney Ques- ction in Congress, * We perceive a movement has commenced in Congress on the highly important question of ~ abolishing the nations! bynk cnereney ond substituting in its place legal tenders, We © have repeitedly otged such a tacceure upon Congress, for several reason®, lirst, thet the government was literally viving a vate corporations 2 valuable priv * over twenty: millions a year, for. which neither Mt nor the public received any i advantage. Second, that by withdrnwi national bank cireiiation aid « tenders in its place the govern i over twenty millions a yer. the issue of three hundred millions or a “legal tenders, whatever »monnt may be fit fixed upon, the Treasury could buy aps “that or retire the ssta> amount of tntores! bi ing bonds—that is, the bonds now depocited hy ‘the national banks as secutity tor their eivea- | lation, from which they draw twenty millions | or more annually inthe way of interest in ad- | Gition to the profits of their cireulation. This would not increase the currency and would only substitute one kind of paper money for another, Why should the people be taxed to + Make such an enormonvs gratuity to ‘com- panies of capitalisis? Why should not »this amount be saved to the Treasury -and applied as a sinking fund to poy vthe national debt? Third, because the legal ler currency ig better, safer and more acceptable to the public than that of the ational banks, Although in ordinary times » ‘the bonds deposited with the Se retary of the _Mregsury by the banks as security for ibeir cir- _Suletion may be sufficient to redeem thelr motes, the time might come, Inn great commer- © dial or war crisis, When these bonds would be #0 depreciated that they would not realiz> “enough to redeem the notes. Tho" loss would then fall upon the government and public, whereas for legal tenders the government is always responsible and would lose nothing by them ina crisis. Fourth, we are opposed to the'national bank eystein becanse it is a dan- gerous monopoly, controlling all the labor and prodicts of labor, the markets and commercial affairs.of the country, placing, in fact, all the industrial interests of the country in the hands ‘of grasping capitalists. It is, too, a dangerous machine, which in a short time would control the destinies of the republic. Every way the uational bank system is a monstrous * evil. ‘The Congressional action referred to was the resolutions, submitted in the House of Rep- sresentatives by Mr. Ross, democrat, of Mlinois, and Mr. Harding, republican, of Ilinois, both pretty much in the samo terms, to the effect that th» Committee on Banking and Currency be iastructed to inquire into the expediency of withdrawing the potional bank currency and winding up the national banks and furnishing sthe country with greenbacks, or currency of a similar character, in place of the national bank currency. The resolution of Mr. Harding was stronger and more explicit than that of Mr. Ross, and was to instruct the committee to re- porta bill. On the motion of Mr. Washburne, -ot Illinois, who appears tobe very active in the interest of the national bank monopoly, the resolutions were laid on the table. But tha, vote shows clearly that the views we have ad-— vanced are making way rapidly in Congress. Against the motion of Mr. Ross the vote stood -86 to 59, and against Mr. Harding’s 94 to 60. ‘This ix great progress in the right direction Bince the Inst session, and we are not without hope of seeing a majority in Congress betore the close of the present session in favor of such a radical change in our currency and banking aid wade will 4 the whole on 4 sound and © national bank interest is ‘powerful in Congress, but we think it will be unable. to resist the progress of enlightened views on this subject. ~ THE TENNESSEF LEGISLATURE.
