FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Suspar, Nov. 25, 1866, Wall street”gave way to one of the most causeloss pan- ‘ies in ita history during the past week, and the bears were entirely successful in driving the bulls before them like a flock of sheep, whereas, had the latter only been resolnte in timo they could have held full control of tho stock market. The movement was aasisted at the outset, about a fortnight ago, by the leading bulla with a view of increasing the “ short’? tuterest and buying back some of the stock they bad sold at lower figures, but they suffered the bears to raid the market so long that their efforts to rally it proved unsuccessful, and it went from bad to worse until Wednesday evening, when 4t fell into a panic which carried prices to their lowest point on #riday morning. One or two of the bull houses, vy the exhibiiion of fright they made aad the reckless manner in which they sold their own aud their cus- tomers’ stocks, did much to produce and afterwards ¢1 courage the panic, By setting a bad example of cowardice, which tended to the demoralization of the bull forces, they added fuel to the fire which the bears were fanning and damaged alike their credit and their pockets, Timid men who go about the street wish faces as long a3 a ladder and palo with fear, questioning everybody they meet in trem- bling accents as to what they think of the market, show such an utter absence of nerve that they are physically and mentally unfit to speculate, and shon!d never ven- ture upon anything so rash and dangerous, A man who fa unable to take bis losses coolly and philosophically should never hazard a throw of dice in Wall street; but in any event he should never show his losses in his countenance, One frightened bull can do moro harm in assisting the fall of prices on a panicky market than a dozen bears ; Dat to do more than smile at such men would be littie better than cruelty to animals. The guiding rulo of action with stock speculators should be to keep a stiff upper Hp aud a coot bead, however their accounts stand. On Friday afternoon and Saturday, the fall having spent its force, there was a marked change for the better ia the speculative temper, and prices improved, although, as a natural consequence of tha see rity of the previous shock, tho progress of the recovery was wot very rapid. At six o'clock on Sauurday even ug the market closed steady at the following qvotations:—Erie 7174 a 74, Reading 113°¢ aM, Northwes'orn 41% a Northwestern preferred und Mississippi certificates 287% a 29, rn 8L% a, Illinois Central 11944 a Cleveland ana Prisburg 6: 104, Fort Wayne 1044 a 4g. Taor, Nov, 23, 1866. Tho Central Railroad, passing into new bands the middle of neat month, when the J. W. Ihave it on the bichest authority thai it is fully intended to greatly improve the running facilities of the road, and to improve the time tables as to speed, materallv lessening the time eon. sumed between the Fading ponts, It Ie thought that the fact of tho Atsorican Expresa Company having already several men in each town along the line, w. inturests in looking ont for the w Ifare of the road will be greaily heighteoed by the semi-nnion, $0 to speak, of the two enterprises, will havo a favorable effect upon the great and really jmportant interests of tha paironiziug public, Another important fact appears. Whon tho rond was constructed, and since tuat time, whenever it has been tound necessary to parehase five of ten acres on which te consiruct fre ght houses, depots, water tanks and other accommo- dation buildings and platforms, inn great number of in- atances the company were compelled to purchase whole farms, «hich they vet retain. The approaching new mavagomont will soll this surplut land and devote the Proceeds to the Improvement ofthe track and the rowd generally, In foot it is given out that ta all respects the ne* broom will not only sweep clean, but will continue the process dar ng its term of uifiee. The programme for the coming election has been made up, and there wl! be no application of the dampened sponge to the stare anterior to the day (13th of Decem- her) set down for the chotce of President. itis thought shat if Mr. Fargo should be chosen to the pomtion of Prewdent the road wonid be henceforth managed en- tirely in the interest of the express companies; but I hear te-day that hia health is ouor, avd that some other Person, allied tothe same combination, may be fixed uupun ultimately.
