The same merits and demerits marked his impersonation; the same beauties and same blemishes were scattered throughout the scenes of the first acts. The charming and lofty dialogue of the tragedy, hardly equalled by that of any otber of Shakspero’s dramas, was often marked by orfffksions and faults of memory on the part of the actors and actresses. The witches and witch scenes were of course failures. When were they otherwise in the memory of man? Designed by the great poet to Inspire awe and terror, to appear weird and ghastly, they are merely ludicrous or contemptible. Great, supernatural creations to excite emotions, border- ing on superstition, are converted into the lowest of low comedy. The witches seem like Pottawotomie In- diang with a bias in favor of farcical fun, bad singing and blue cambric. Charles Kean onee attempted to put Macbeth on the stago as it ought to be, and he succeeded after a fashion, which woe in this country bave never sought to imitate. Mr, Dillon's person is much against him. That he makes ua forget it at times is to be placed to his eredit. Macbeth was woll received by the audience, who no doubt believe Mr. Dillon a much better representative of the character than we can conscientiously declare. Stade Theatre. The chief attraction at this theatre last night was Attilie Genée, in the Hirsch Family, The wit of the piece consists in its caricature of a class of Jews, nowa- days more familiar traditionally than from personal a- quaintance, for as the social condition of this once dospised race improves, they improve im culture and refinement, and it is but rarely that one meets with such specimens of the parvenu as represented in the Hirsch Family. Those, however, who have travelled in Ger- many will have occasionally met with members of this farfamed ““Zwickauer”’ tribe, and will thoroughly ap- ating the character, she delineated tation of refinement snd extravagant fomiliar to New York under the name of ‘ B* her specch savored ‘of “the brogue,’? and the rile, that of a school wes somewhat too Javenile for her.
