2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sunpay, Nov. 11, 1866. ‘The stock market was active but irregular during the past week. Its general tendency was upward, but on Saturday a raid was made upon Erie and the North- ‘western shares which roversed the previous course of prices, and the former, which had sold at one time as high as 863, was hammered to 82. Previous to the rise, however, it had been depressed to 8134. The decline in question, with which the rest of the railway list par- tially sympathized, was to all appearances owing toa speculative manoeuvre as distinguished from a substantial cause, aod it will not improbably be followed by another upward movement, for which the fresh short Thterest has prepared the market. The sup- ply of money is so abundant and the number of outside operators so large that, with the value of railway pro- perty steadily improving, it is a mgre than horculean task to reaist the tide of speculation for a rise, and all efforts towards that end can be attended with only vory temporary success until the movement exhausts itself, whioh as yet it is evidently far from having done, The bears made a sharp attack upon the market early in the week, but it reacted immediately afterwards, involving them in lose instead of bringing profit, and the same experince will probably be repeated to-morrow and afterwards. No apprehension of monetary strin- gency at this ceRtre under present circumstances cam exist in the mind of any sound thinker. There is ab- solately more active currency in circulation now, than Shore ever was before in this country, while in con- gequence of the decline of gold there is far less omploy- ment for it, Atthe same time the net earnings of the leading railways are larger in proportion to the gross re- ceipts than they have been since the currency inflation eommenced, and the gradual reduction of the interest- bearing portion of the national debt releases from employment a proportionate amount of paper money, thus indirectly inflating the currency and increasing the plethora of funds at the financial centres, The dulness of trade, too, compared with the previous activity, disengages in the aggregate a consid- erable sum of capital, and covtributes thereby to the activity of speculation on the Siock Exchange, towards which idle funds constantly tend. At the close of the week cail loans op miscellaneous collaterais were made freely at five per cent and on governments at four, while the exceptions at six were too trifling to afford any indication of the state of the market, There was a slight increase observable in the quantity of commercial paper offered for discount, aud the rate tor the best grade advanced to 53g 4 6}, the majority of transactions being at six, although a few at long date were reported at seven. The fact that the banks of this city allow all but hiflifa million of their twenty-five millions of tem- porary deposits represented by Clearing House certifl- cates to remain idle in the Sub-Treasury shows that they ace at present unable to lend all their available surplus, The Western money markets are as easy as is usual at this season of the year, and the return flow fromthe Weat will set in very soon, The South is as well sup- plied with currency as its necessities call for, and the movement of this year’s cotton crop will call for no more currenoy than is aiready there, although specie, toa Innited extent, will probably be required, Some persons are foolish enough to say that we are on the verge of a financial and commercial revulsion, and they have beon talking in the same strain since the war ended, but on an irredeemabie paper money basis there an be no such revulsion in the absouce of efforts to bring about a forced resumption of specie payments, of which there is no probability. The stock market closed steady, after feverish fluctua- tions, at half-past five on Saturday at the subjoined quo- tations :—Erie 82%; u 3, New York Central 117% a Michigan Southern 9144 a 44, Northwestern 56 a }4—pr ferred 7834 a %, Fort Wayne 10034 a 44, Ohio and Mis- sigsippi certificates 843, a 44. The miscellaneous etocks wore quiet, except Paciilc Matl, which advanced to 245. G@overnmont securities were duil, but firm, and théte Be: little or no speculative interest in them, the specul mind being absorbed in the contemplation of ra’ at shares, upon which the proseut speculation in Wat street 1s entirely centred. The gold market was heavy, and asthe week di a olose the bears largely oversold it. The price atly declined from 148%, the highest price on Mon: to 144%, the closing prica in the Gold Room Saturday; after which on the sireet and town there were transactions as low as 144. At this price, however, gold may be considered cheap in comparison with what it will probably sell at ‘m the future. The demand for customs duties at this port during the week aggregated $2,094,000, which was more than offset by the payment of $3,712,000 In coin taterest on the public debt. The foreign exchange market was firm at the opening, but gradually yielded under tho limited demand for bills, At the close of business on Saturday bankers’ bills on England at sixty days were quoted at 109 a %—at three Aaya 10074 & 110; commercial bills 108 a 108 3¢ ; france at siaty days 5.17%, a 6.15—at three days 5.10; bills on Borlin 72 a 723¢, om Bremen 78% 879%, on Frankfort 410413, on Amsterdam 40% 241, on Hamburg 36. 36%, Antwerp 5.18% a 5.15. ‘The highest prices of the leading stocks sold at the fret sessiow of the Exchange on each Saturday of the Inst four weeks were as follor Stocks, Oct, 20, Oct. 27. OUR ALBANY CORRESPONDENCE, Moecting of the Directors of the Central Rail- road at Albany—The New ( binations—The Question of the Presidency, &c. Drevan Hovse, ALwaxy, Nov. 8, 1866 The directors of the New York Central Railroad Com- pany held another meeting here to-day, there being a full and thoroughly representative attendance. Acon- siderable amount of routine business was transacted as usual, but the chief subject of consultation was the com- binations bearing upon the approaching election of presi- dent in December. ‘Mr. Vico Preaidont R. M. Blatchford, of New York, presided, awd it is said ruled some of the hanghtier elements of the board with an unsparing hand, and decidedly in the interest of his own ambition to succeed Deau Richmond. It is now Known that the coming controlling _combina- tions will, beyond peradventure, induce several marked changes in the board, to which I will hereinafter allude, I do not think the rumoron the street this morn ing that Mr. Erastus Corning has been fixed upon as the candidate of the Western Railroad in- terests can be credited, though that gentleman will doubtless resume a large measure of his former power- ful influence in the affairs of the road. It is felt that he was unjuatly displaced to make way for Mr. Richmond, eh ne fome ee F should be made to the vene- There will now be no election of Proaident ad inferim, * for the reason that there is no necessity for such action, and the lar election ocourring early next month, ie the “tana of the wiockhoiders a large can be postponement of the choice until regularly designated day. This Getocminaton has Cm ‘unanimously arrived at. THR NEW COMBINATIONS. The South hee party, or combination, of which ar confident J. W. Keep is the representative man, are img the road, The express company int ostetiona Mr, Corning r'to have united with them. Mr. Van- oe of aiming at the absolute control of the road, wi ww content himself with retaining in the dirtton hen in-law, Horace F. Clark, and his gen- mt, J. H. Bavker. What confirms this view is ‘ommodore Vanderbilt, holding a large number of convertible varie re tot yrange the (pies at the present rates: 1) profit rat! than to hold control of them. PROBABLE CHANGES IX THE BOARD. The changes in the direction of the board will not be as sweeping as was at first intimated. In Buffalo, Mr, Wm. G. Fargo will ay take the place as director, vacated by Dean Richmond. Mr. Whitney, of Rochester, whe replaced Mr. Gould, of that probably be removed. dr. Chedell, y be retained. Mr. ©. Paige, of Schenectady, and Livingston Spraker, ‘of Montgomery, will very probably give way to new men. Mr, Erastus Corning will probably insist upon super- = Mr. Henry H. Martin, and it is suggested will pre- is son, Erastus Corning, Jr., for the place, Mr, Cornelius ta tracy, of Troy, and Carles H. Wvssoll, of Now York, will, 1am assured, be forced to yield to suc- cessors. niel Thayer, of Boston, who personally holds, as well as represents, a large amount of stock in Now England, will undoubtedly be retained. As already intimated, Messrs, Clark and Banker will hold over. THE QUBSIION OF THE PREBINENCY. The question of President is more difficult to solve, Mr. W. G. Fargo, of Buffalo, would undoubtedly be chosen on account of his practical knowledge and his situation in connection with the West; but bis interest in press companies i3 now by considered a diequalifi- veton. pin, of ae jusetts, President of the ‘Western road, and reierred to in this connec. tion in my bh of the Slat ult, will not despat accept that position, As to Mr. Samuel Stoan, of Now York, in spite of his conceded qualifications, be will have to encounter tho decided and powerful hostility of Commodore Vandorbilt, who, having ouce removed him from the Hadson River road, will never consent to hie reappearance as head of the Central. bd other names, therefore, themselves—Mr. J. W. Keep himself, howe knowledge of railroad matters is inainly confined to the price of stocks, and Mr. Boody, formoriy of Roch. ester, now of New York, who isa pevctieal man of large experience, and entirely in the confidence of the south Shore interest. It was Mr. Boody who, when the Wa- bash and Ohio Railroad was utterly bankrupt, and when he hitaself lost all his property, ed his seat in Con- gress, left his residence in ochester, aud de- voted his whole energies to completing end owe, ping the road, and to such an odministration ite affairs as hed the almost ruined pon re Rng Bat will Mr. Boody abandon his residence in New York apd the comparative ease which wealth has assured him to undertake at this time the administration of so vast an intorest without compensation? Tho office of Prosi- dent of the Central road has always been an unsalaried one Mr. Boody has this in his favor, that he is re- ‘por Fenton, it is said, has intimated s road Is put under republican control, he may reliaquith bis hostility to {t and assent to a moderate in- crease of passenger fares, There fea © joney in whieh John V. L. Prayn's name may be brought up, but only as a compromise can- didate. He has been with the road from the commonce- ment, and was indeed in the old Mohawk and Hudson direction long betore the consolidation. Mr. Praya, who ‘Das jast been elected to Congress, is understood not to be a candidate, Much of these specuintions have awnited the return from Enrope of Mr, Keep. Before his doparture one of the stock combinations in Wall stroet presented bis wife and daughter with a meb and costly set of diamonds, If this new combination succeeds, and is able to swallow up the Central, itta difficult to see in what extravagant form tholr grutithde will be manifested.
