2 FINANCIAL AND COMMER TAL. Monvay, Nov. 5—6 P. M. The stock market has halted in its upward course to- day, owing to the general anticipation that to-morrow wil! witneas a lull in speculation on account of the elec, tion absorbing public attention. The effect of the latter has therefore been discounted, and the probability now is that prices will improve, New York Central was an exception to the rule, aud advanced to 12234, undera demand from parties desiring to vote upon the stock at the annual mecting in December, im preparation for which the transfer books of the company will close on tbe 10tb’inst, There is no change to note im the tone of the speculative feeling, and all the conditions of the market, monetary and otherwise, remain favorable to a long continued rise. ‘The statement of the associated banks of this city for the week ending on the 3d inst, is a rather favorable one for this season of the year, showing them to be in a strong position and with large loanable resources at their dispoaal, The loans and the legal tender notes have de- creased in aD equal ratio, the former being down $2,035,021, and the latter $3,074,083. ‘The deposits have incraased $1,001,123, the circulation $222,770, and the specie $1,338,884 It is shrewdly surmised that the dovrease in legal tenders is mainly owing to the conver- ston of compound interest notes into five-twenty bonds of the new issue of 1865 through the Treas- ury Department, and not to a drain west- ward or southward, as some would make be- lieve, and this reasoning. is consistent with the increase in deposits. The banks have, however, still a resorve of nearly seventy-five millions of legal tender’ motes, assum which, in addition to the specie, leaves them with twenty millions in excess of the legal require- ment, The increase in the specie is due to the Sub- Troasury disbursements in payment of the November coupons. The totals of the present aud previous state- Mente are as under:— October 27. Loans. $274,725, 456 $271,790,435 Specie 7,848,239 9,186,623. Clearings + $762, 264,041 $761,934,453 Balances « 27,423,820 25,104, O11 One or two ofthe private bankers on the ‘‘bear” side on- deavored to createan impression that money wag becom- ing less abundant in proportion to the demand by advanc- ing their lending rate to six per cent this morning; but the banks made no change in theirs, and lént freely at five, and in a number of instances at four percent, the ma- Jority of first class houses supplying themselves at the latter figure. There is no perceptible outward drain of currency, and the supply of loanable fuads will be more likely to increase than diminish at this centre during the remainder of the year. There is no material change in the condition of the Western money markets, The Chi- cago Tribune, of Friday, remarked:—‘‘Some of the dis- count houses report the market rather elose, but not un- comfortably so; elsewhere it iseasy, and currency shows signs of accumulation.” With respect to the Eastern cities the Boston Journal, of Saturday, said:—‘“The steadiness of the money market is maintained, and each sucoseding day tells the same story of ease and abun- dance.’? At the! early session of the open board the market was firm, and at the first regular board it was steady, witha well distributed volume of business. Atlantic Mail sold up to 13134, the Committee of the Stock Ex- change liaving reported in favor of the decision of the board in open meeting on Saturday, namely, that the new stock of the company is not a good delivery under existing circumstances. The arguments for and against the injunction will be heard very soon, and meanwhile those who sued it out have the gratification of knowing that it has already had the effect of frightening some of. the “shorts” into covering at considerable loss. The whole transaction savors of Wall street strategy, and ts merely interesting a& @ smart attempt at a ‘‘corner- ing’? operation. Government securitics showed in- creased firmness and activity.
