FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Mowvay, Oct. 29—6 P. M. The stook market maintains its upward tendency, and wallway shares, with Erio leading the way, experienced ® forther advance to-day. This disappointed some of the old conzervative houses on the bear side anda few ‘ef the weak speculative houses who have followed thelr eed. The latter find their position becoming more and more perilous, for the rising tide of speculation threatens te evguif them in ruin, and hence they resort to metorepresentation and trickery whenever an opportu - fatty proseu's iteelf. Their latest effort has been to pro- @nee an impression that money is tightening, and with {hie viow they have sent round to the banks offering to errow absurdly enormous amounts at the minimum sete of interest which they wero anprepared to take and which the banks were equally unwilling to lend them. ‘They entertained strong hopes that the bank statement fer last week would be of some little assistance to their operations, and that a drain of currency westward would sot in, but with provoking perversity the bank statement: as turned out reassuring, while all over the West the fmdicaitons are favorable to a return flow eastward, at the game time that the railways are overburdened with freight In this connection the Chicago Tribune of Fri- @ey remarked :— There is comparatively little exchange being made, owing to the scarcity of freight room on the railroads. and the high rates of Jake freights cause shippers to hold off, jpeliing the banks to carry the property until it can Petorwardea on better terms. Round lots of exchange were placed between bankers at 600, discount a 60c. pre- @lum—closing with more buyers than sellers at the igure. Some of the banks say they will be com- miled to ship currency if the present stringency con Eaves much longer. ‘There was no change ta ooanier gates—|-10 a 34 discount buying, and par selling—mostly @t the inside figures, ‘With regard to the money market the Cincinnati @azette of the same day said:— supply of currency seartet and aif logitimale Getanda ‘ave readily supplied B48 010 per cent interest on prime paper. Tho market ules easy. If we may judge of the immediate future from the facility with which money was borrowed at 4 per cent @e-day, the presont week ts likely to witness greater monetary caso than bas been experienced since the pre- wailing speculative activity commenced. There was a farge amount in excess of the requirements of borrow- ‘ere offered at this. rate, while two or three of the leading ealors in government securities supplicd them- getves without difficulty at 308% per cent, The emceptions, too, at 5 per cent were fewer than usual @f late, and first class commercial paper was in @equest at 6.0 6 per cent, The associated bank state- ‘ment for the week ending om Saterday shown a decrease ‘of $4,410,340 in loans and of only $1,243,281 in deposits, ‘hos indicating that the banks are in an easier position @ the extent of the difference between the two amounts ‘than they were previously. The legal tender notes show ‘en unimportant decrease of $560,544, andthe circulation of $171,803, The specie shows an increase of $476,752 ‘fmstead of a decrease, owing to the million of com paid oy the Treasury into the Bank of Commeree for the pur- base of forcign exchange belng counted in the state- ent.
