NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1800, THE FENIANS. Monster Meeting at Jones’ Wood Yesterday. continent, ‘but from all paris of the world, all those true republicans would have sym- path zed with os, would have rallied round us and sup- ported us, instead of which they held aloof looking on at us with contempt or ridicule. We had realized three great triumphs ip . any one of which would bo regarded a3 ‘intellectual revolution; we had ed in Irel we bad made of the Irish people a republican people, and we had taught the peoplo to distinguish between two-fold character of their clerzy, (Ihe crowd here presved firmly against tho 4, when the speaker aivised them to move away 4 not orush the stand. He also made a side remark, ‘There is no use of trying to speak here.) I say that three great pointa tad been eTpcted tn Ireland, and that if it ‘donly be believed by the republicans of this continent and all the world that we had actoally achieved there threo things, we should bave sympathy and support beyond a doubt, or they have proved themselves to bo recreant to thoir princi. ples. The three thugs were: first, I aid we bad created anarmy out of a people unused to arms, in a country where there had been no army since the volunteers wont down in 1782. We raised an army, organized an army, trained it, and the training and disciplining of that army, of a portion of thut army, at least, was equal to that of y army I know of. (Applause, voices, “bear!"’ hear !") There were 50,000 of :hese men thoronghiv trained, and of the men in our ranks 200,000 men and more obeyed their officers ot eanliatey, as any men in any army on the earth, This is a well-known fact to all who were in our confidence in Ireland. (Votces, + hear!’ ‘hear!") Itia not known to anybody who was in our confidencs, And for any man in Ireland, to say nothing of America to preenme to go to Iretand, and preaume to walk through Ireland, and travel through Irelan‘, takiag notes of our organization, and then wr ting about it, ts a piece of folly, of presumptuous folly only to berexproted from a lunatic in a very bad state indeed. (Voices, “hear!” “hear! laughter and applause.) To think that a journal in New York, should send a reporter to Trejand, and that that reporter could learn anything about our orranization {9 to be made or to pretend to be mado a dupe, in order that he might dupe Othor people, It 1s not possible for any man or number of men, not even the men from our own ranks in Ane- rica to go to Ireland and learn the aecret workings of our movement without proper credentials, and those creden- tials could be given by nove but myself or my deputy. (Applause,) We had this organized army tn Ireiaad last year, and that one point would have secured us, if known, the apeepathy of every etruggiing gone oo the world and of every lover of freedom. But we had done more than that, we had made of the Irish peo- MMe, & poople *ho had been pronounced the most mon- archical and armtocratic in Europe, a republican people, There was nothing to be done for Iretand withou! an army. (A voice, © Chat’s 8o!") But we wanted some- thing elee besides thiain Ireland. We wanted a repub- Hic in order that the people of Ireland should become their own Inadholders, We wanted to get rid of the curse of Eng)i#b lacdiordism—a curso that has weighed heavior on tho jlo of Ireland than all the other laws of England. (Applause,) We wanted to get rid of tho abominable agrarian law, so tnat the tiller of the 20.1 should 6 bis own landiord, and that there should be no man between the tiiler of the soil and tire state and country, I declare te you here to-dav, without any doubt whatever, that the Doopte would prouonnce atno out of every ten for @ republic, without any doubt (Prolonged choermg and applause.) This waa the aecond point gained by us. And if this point had been known here in America—if this bad been known I axk—iow could the true republicans of this country bring them. selves to write of us or think of us as they did write and think about us in Ireland, or how could they bring thom- selves to encourage the poor Iittle flibustering meve- ments here North and South, and allowed this organiza- tion to have been broken up at the very (ime when wo were in our power, when Ireiand was tn our hands, and the entre Eugliisa power lay tn the bands of the Irish people, as ti a ee in my hand?
