FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. genes Oct. 14, 1866. Tho past week witnessed great speculative activity on the stock exchange, although there was less excitement than in the previous ons, and the volume of business was somewhatsmaiter, ‘The interest of the market was confined almost exclusively to railway shares, and chielly nuong them to Northwesters common, Michigan South- , and Fort Wayne, ‘There was also an active move- {at advancing figures among some of the miscel- ous railway shares, which are usually littie dealt in and mostly held im large blocks; but against these the public requires warning, as except when under the manipulation of cliques there is little or no market for them. ‘The demand for the common stock of the North- western Company is based upon the largely mereased earnings of the road and the expeciation of a further improvement when its extension to Omaha, now build- ing, and connecting there with the Pacific Railroad, is completed. New York Central resumed its upward course, rising from 1124¢ to 119%4—a high price for an eight per cont stock; but it ts evidently governed by a purpose, probably connected with the annual election to teke place in December. The interest in Erie bas subsided, and the common stock was comparatively inactive, but it romained firm throughout at 834 a 8634, with the ex- ception of afew moments at the regular board on Mon- day morning, when it declined to 82 There was a de- mand for Erie preferred, in anticipation of a resumption of dividends, which caused an advance in it to 86%. At the beginning of the week a large “short” intereat was created, particularly in Erie, under the impression that the break in that stock would carry the whole market down, and it did so to a very limited extent, but quickly resumed its former buoyant tone, under which prices rose higher than before, while Erie itself failed to exhibit the weakness which the bears had cal- culated upon, Almost every railway stock om the list moved upward by 2 common speculative impulse, and, although real values governed the shrewdest of the buyers in their selection of securi- ties, the majority manifested a sublime indifference with regard thereto, and bought to sell again, witha blind faith in bigher prices. It is in this respect that the present speculation for a rise resembles no other that we have bad since that of the first three months of 1864, when prices rose far higher than they are at present, The bears are dwind!ing in number every day, while the ranks of the bulls are being con- tly reernited. Meanwhile money remains in abundant sapply at four per cent, with exceptions at 3% a 6, and there is} every prospect of a Jong continuance of this monetary eas The Western cities aro also better supp with currency than is visual at this season of the year, and. the best prade of commercial paper is readily taken at. the ordinary rates, namely, 10 percent at Chicago and 8 a9 at Cincinnati. Government securities were firm but quiet, and the demand was chiefly on speculative account in antictpa- tion of aa improvement in five-twenties abroad, and a consequent revival of the export demand, The irrogu- larity with which London quotations have been received through the cable bas tended to check operations. Prices showed an advance at the close of *¢ a % per cont over these current at the end of last week, At half past five on Saturday railway shares closed strong at the following quotations:—New York Centra! 19a 1%, Erie 8344 a %, Reading 11675 9 117, Michigan Southern M1, 0 Cleveland and Pittsburg 94a 14, Rock Island 109% a %, North Western 4674 a 47—preferred 763g aX, Fort Wayne 110% a 7%, Cleveland and Yoledo 122% aX, ex dividend. The gold market has been excited and buoyant, and the price advanced from 1487f on Monday to 1534 on Thursday morning. The price on Wodnes- day, however, ranged from 149 to 161); and the im- mediate cause of the advance on the following day was the false report of acommunication from the President to the Attorney General, which made ite appearance in a Philadelphia journal, and which was immediately telegraphed to all the New York papers, ‘The public mind is much occupied in discovering the source of this fraud upon the public, and it is generally belioved to have boon a Wall street invention, intended to advance gold and depress government securities, and thero is little doabt that the general belief is well founded, Notwithstanding the official contradiction of this canard, howover, gold rose on Friday from 150%, at the com- mencomout of business, to 153%y, and on Saturday it was firm at 152% @ 15444, The customs demand at this port, for the week, aggregated $2,639,000, aud the Sub-Trea- sury disbursomonts of coin interest to $52, 900. Tho foreign exchange market was heavy and dull early in the week, and rates dectined in consequence of the advance in gold, which had the effect of causing im- porters to defer buying; but subsequently the market improved, and at the close rates were very firm as under :—Bankers’ bills on England at sixty days 107 aX, throe days 1073, a 108, commercial 106 » 106%; francs at sixty days Gf. 250, a Of. B5c., at short sight Sf. 233¢¢. a 5f. 26. Confidence in long bills te fnily restored, owing to the easy state of monetary affairs not ouly in England but on the continent, and especially in France, The amount of gold hold in both departments by the Rank of England on the 26th of September was £16,729,- 262, an increase of £505,746 upon tliat of the previous week, and a larger sum than it had held at any previous {i ne since the nearly corresponding period of 1862, when tho rate of interest was 2 percent. The amount of notes in circulation continued to show a reduction, the total peing £23,049,606, The stagnation of the money market was shown in an increase of £959,258 in deposits and a decrease of £371,000 In the ad- vances on private securities, thus showing a gain of £1,810,858 to the bank. The rezerve in the banking department had been thas swelled to £8,679,597, of which £7,686,445 was in notes, and £1,003,152 in cold ond silver coin, Put notwithstanding thisextremely easy condition of monetary affairs, such is the distrust inspired by the panic of May Inet that speculation ts almost ata standstill, and this semi-paralysie of the speculative mind it is generally expected will continue for some months longor The highest prices of the leading stocks sold nt the firet foevon of the Exchange on cach »a'urcay of the last four weeks wore as follows: — iz Alton & Terre b on & Terr veland & oe be al | Coals eee Die ge & Northwestern pi os berinnd Coals... 45 at rvelaeal Col, & Cin Deleware & Hudson Can: Hudeou River. Davis—His Prospects of Speedy Trial and the State of Hin Health. Fortress Mowrog, Oct. 12, 1866. JEFF DAYS, No intelligence has yet reached here confirming the statement of your Washington correspondent that a final settlement of the case of Jeff Davis has just beon dovermined on in @ Cabinet session. ay I deem very reliable authority, J am advised that Mr. Davis expects to be tried next month, that bis more immediate and intimate friends look for the oy — and that his counsel are laboriously preparing on his defence. The most serious question of all'a at Sree. ent relates to the health of Mr. Davis. While all most interested in him for the best, the most sanguine express the fear that his health is at too low an ebb to be restored, that the sands of his life are rapidly running = and that he soon will be the all earthly tribunals, Mr. O’Conor att his growing | feebleness when here. | Every day increasing weal ckness of his voice, his unsteady and paintal walk, Fine deepening hollow of his cheeks, hia es more sunken, his ———. sight and failing ap) and spirits, show it with pal and mpdeutning certainty. I write from no sfoupalag for Mr. Davis on the ‘lost cause,’ of which he was the offending head and front. I write the simp!e facts as L learn them and become convinced of the'r reliabitit While there may be doubt as to the time of his trial, and while it may be doubtful whether ho wiil be tried at all, thore i# no doubt as to the sont etate of his health, Strangers who see him unite in this statement. His friends, many of whom visit and see him every day, tell the samo story. Southern editors obtaining interviews with him unite in the same strain. Meantime his wife and their ngest child remain with him. Of food, of medicine, tendance ho has the best. He has no possible ground of complaint of bis treatment. The only fault he finds is in the delay of his trial. MISCELLANEOUS POLITICAL ITEMS. Gerrixa Skxgrate.—The Norfolk (Va.) Dominion is be- coming diagusted with the copperheads.
