FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Suspay, Sept. 30, 1868, ‘The past week witnessed a further revival of speou- fation in railway shares, attended by @ general ad- vanoe of prices and a degree of excitement unparalleled since the spring of 1864, Although the business in each of the leading stocks was large, the chief interest of the centred in Erie and New York Cen- towards the close, in Michigan South- ern and Rock Island also, The last mentioned, after selling up to 108% on Saturday, ex the semi-annual dividend of five per cent, relapsed to 108—the equivalent of 113, dividend on. Michigan Bouthern sold up to 88%, with a spinted demand. The fapid movement in New York Central is attributed to motives connected with the annual election in Decem- or, and more immediately to that for the Presi- @evcy, which is shordy to take place at Albany, where the directors of the company met on Wriday. The position is contested by at least ‘broe candidates, The stock closed at 11d a , & price generally considered far above its value, notwith- standing the company’s rumored surplus, The Erie movement is based upon somewhat similar grounds, but pore is hoped for from a change of management in this ‘han in the oiher case, and, asthe great highway con- mecting the East with the West, its future isa bighly promising one. Moreover, owing to the partial failure @ the crops in Europe, it is expected that there will be wlarge foreign demand for our breadstuffs, and that (his will materially increase the earnings of all the main lines of railway extending from @his point westward during the next year. Hence, to somo extent, the strong upward movement of Rock Isiand, Michigan Southern and the other leading Western stocks, Some of the miscellancous shares fluctuated @onsiderably during the week. Cumberland advanced to 6614, and Mariposa preferred declined to 293%, Western Waion Telegraph, too, fell to 5434. Government securities were neglected but firm up to Saturday, when a moderately brisk demand for five- twenties set im, the result partly of the Treasury order to suspend conversions of seven-thirty notes iuto five-twentios of 1865. A new five-twenty bond, dated July instead of May, has been prepared, and the Treasury is willing to convert-August seven-thirties into those, but the second and third series of the notes aro t similarly available for conversion, The reason why preference is given to the first series is that they mature market was tral, and, within a year from the present time, and is is the object of the department to reduce the amount next maturity by conversions into bonds as much as poseible. The second ang third series, on the other hand, do not mature until June and July, 1868, and there is consequently less necessity for the ‘Treasury to provide against their maturity than exists with regard to the first series; but of the policy of issu. ing the new bonds for the ostensible purpose named we abal! have occasion to remark after further inquiry, The ‘ew bonds constitute a fourth series, the interest of which is payable in January and July, on the tirst of each month, The mew bonds bear the motto “In God we trust,” and the portrait of President Johnson, The gold market developed an upward tendency dur- 4g the weok, and the daily range of quotations was as wader:— Lowest. There was a very considerable demand to “cover’’ mercantile “short” contracts towards the close of the week, On Saturday there was a moderately brik bor- towing demand for coin, and loans were made at 1-32 a 46 per cent per diem in favor of the lender, The de- mand for oustoms duties at this port during the week aggregated $2,690,000. The export for the week was only $38,240. The shipments of specie from this port and Boston since the beginning of May have aggregated $51,535,309. The tendency of the market is upward, ander the domand to “cover’’ mercantile “‘short’’ con- tracts, The Foreign Exchange market was firm throughout the week, and bankers’ bills on England at sixty days closed at 108 34; short sight 109 a 34. ‘The loan market was easy throughout the week. Call loans were made freely at four per cent, with exceptions @t6a6 percent. The discount line was dull, and first class commercial paper was in request at a 3¢ per cent, but the supply was limited in the extreme. The asking rate at the banks was generally six per cent. The stock market closed strong on Saturday, and the quotations current at six o'clock were as under;—New York Central 114 a \, Erie 833; a 84, Hudson 124% a 125, Reading 118 a 3, Michigan Southern 68% a %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 901 a $, Rock Ivland 108 8 , Northwestern 375 @ %{—preferred 72 a 34, Fort Wayne 108 & 1%, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 2044 a 3, Can. ton 563, @ 67, Cumberland 5644 a %, Quicksilver 53% a 54, Mariposa preforred 29% a 30. The Stato of Massachusetts pays the interest of its debt in coin, The city of Boston will pay interest in coin on the first day only of October, and after that the equivalent of gold at the market price of that day. In- terest is also due October 1 on Roxbury city 6 per cent bonds, at treasurer's office or Suffolk Bank. The dividends ot the Boston banks for the past three years compare as follows: — There are fow changes of note in the present fall divi- @ends as compared with regular dividends declared last April.
