2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sarcrpay, sept, 20-6 P. M. There has been increased excitement on the Stock Ex- change to-day, and all the leading railway shares were in strong demaxd, and especially Erie, which rose rapidly to 834,—an advauce of five per cent upon the price cur- rent yesterday morning—the general impression boing that it will continue on its upward course until the elec- tion takes place. Meanwhile the demand for proxies is not likely to abate, mor the interest in the stock to diminish. In this connection the following names have beon suggested for directors of the company, under the proposed new régime, IL will be observed that six of these names are represented in the present anagement :— NOMINATIONS. OLD BOARD. Samuel Sloan, R R. Berdell, A. & Diven, AS. Diven, R. H. Berdell, D. A. Cushman, Moses Taylor, Daniel Drew, JF D, Lauier, F. D. Lanior, George 8. Coe, a L. Pearson, H. F. Vail, W. B. Evans, W. Evang, Henry Martin (At, & G W.), 3. Arnot, Denning Duer, G, Mead’ (deceased), Wiliam B, Astor. C. Vanderbilt (resigned), ‘There is no change to note in the condition of the money mavket Loans are offered freely at four per cent, with exceptions at 3 a5, and some of the leading dealers in government securities are enabled to supply themselves mainly at 23¢ per cent, First class commer- cial papor is still in limited supply, and the best grade is in request at 5a per cent. There is no perceptible drain westward, aud all the indications are favorable to prolonged ease, At the 10 o'clock session of the open board Erie was very active and stroug (sales 4,500 shares), and advanced to 803g. New York Ceutral declined om the call from 114% to 4, and Rock Isiand from 112% to 111%. Michigan Southern was in demand, and rose to 86%. Cleveland and Pitteburgh soid at 89, Northwestern 3734 a s—proferred 1135 a 4s, Fort Wayne 108, Reading 116%, Mariposa preferred 90, Cumberland 5534 a %, Canton 55, There were some transactions in gold to the extent of more than half a miition at 1455 a 146. At the first regular board the market was strong and excited. Erie closed 23g higher then at the same time yesterday, Now York Contrai 27, Reading 3, Michigan Central 3, Michigan Southern 13,, Lllincis Central %%, Cloveland and Pittsburg 3%, Northwestern %—proferred 14, Chica- go and Alton 2\—pre erred 1, Cumberland 34, Rock Is- land 34, Fort Wayne 44, Toledo and Wabash 3, Quick- siver 144, Mariposa §,—preferred }4, Western Union Tele- graph 144. Government securities showed increased strength and animation, and coupon fve-twenties closed 44 bigher, issue of 1865 3¢ seven-thirty notes of the first and third series 3%, second series 3, State stocks were depressed, Sixes of Tennessee, new issue, were 3g lower, North Carolina, new bouds, 36. At the one o'clock open board the market was buoyant. New York Central sold at 113%, Erie 805%, Hudson 1245, Reading 116%; (b 3), Chicago and Alton 113%, Michigan Centra! 115%, Michigan Southern 87%, Illinois Central 123, Cleveland and Pittsburg 89%, Rock Island 11244, Norihwestern %7,—preferred 12, Fort Wayne 10734, Chicago and Great Eastern 49%, Obio and Missis~ sippi certiGcates 293g, Canton 5634, Cumberland 5634, Quicksilver 53%, Mariposa 13%—preforred 29%, Western Union Telegraph 5444. The market was subsequentiy very strong and excited, frie rose to 8333, and Michi- gan Southern to 68%. The demand was mainly for these stares and those of the Rock Island railway, but the greatest activity was in Erie, the strong upward course of which took the street by surprise. At half- past five the market was steady at the following quota- tons:— New York Central 114 a 4, Erie 8334 a 84, Hudson 12434 0125, Reaging 118 a %4, Michigan Southern 6834 a , Cleveland and Pittsburg 90} a 9, Rock Island 108 a 3, Northwestern 37); a %—preferred 72 a 34, Fort Wayne 103 a 3, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 2914 a %, Canton 66% a 67, Cumberland 66% aX, Quicksilver 53% a 54, Mariposa preferred 20% a 30, The gold market is strong, with an upward tendency of the most decided character, not, however, from specu- jative purchases so much as legitimate operations to “‘cover’’ mercantile ‘shorts.’ The opening prico was 145%, followea by an advance to 146%. It subsequently declined to 145%, and then ro- acted to 14634, the closing quotation, There was a moderately brisk borrowing demand for ociu, ‘and loaus wore mode at 1-32 a 3¢ per cent per diem in favor of tho lender. The only’ specie shipment of to-day was $28,000, making for the week $38,240, The shipments since the beginning of May last have aggro- gated more than $50,000,000, the details of which a. follows :— / mount.
