Buraed by K Fight Eeasves—A W ‘ite Man Killed and seve ral Negroes Severely Wounded, Ba Lemons, August %, 1895, Last night ap attack was made on the colored portion of the camp meeting held at SbipNey’s Woods, three miles from Hanover switch, on the Wasirington road, by a baud of armed desperadves. Several megroes were badly beaten and wounded, @nd a white man, named Milton Benson, while at prayer, was shot in the back of the head and mortally wounded, the ball coming out of his mouth, Asfarascan be ascertained the following are the facts ‘a this outrageous aifair:—A white camp meeting, at> tended by many ministers of the Methodist Episcopal Chureh of the North Baltimore district, of which the Rev. Mr. Lanahan ts presiding elder, was being held at the place befor: ted. The Rev Messrs, Speake, Reid and other white ministers were officially at a whitd camp meeting near, who, under the auspices of some people, holding camp exercises also. During yesterday afternoon a number ot young mea were noticed in che camp ground having pistols on their persons These were, $0 (ar as can be ascertained, resis denta of the surrounding neighborhood. Ne disturbs ance occurred during the day but a miduight, while the colored people were conducting religious exercises, they were violently set upon by ‘7 gang of mon making loud shouts of epithe and impre~ cations. The attack commenced with the beating of a aegro man while on his knees, The negtoss at once rose up, and a scene of wild and indescribable excite. ment ensued, women screaming in terror. Shots were firod by the assailants, bat in the dark, and but fow are supposed to have taken affect, The colored men rallied and turned upon the assailants and drove them off two or three times, while the women fled toward the white camp. Many colored people were wounded with clabs, and there were some flesh wounds from pistol shots. some of the colored men had pistols, and used them freely upon their assailanta, but with what result is not known. Finally the conilict ended through the persua- sion of the white ministers and others, by the colored people leaving the grounds and seeking their homes, leaving their camp to the desperadoos, who, further xrati- flod their unmanly spirit by piling the tents and eifects of the negroes, including bundles and trunks of clothing, in a heap and, setting Gre to the pile, destroyed ail, The white man shot as rat mentioned was at prayer at the altar in the white camp, where Me Speake was conducting the exercises. By whom the shot was fred is not known, but the friends of some of the ministers believe that it was fired by some of the white rioters, who intended it for a prominent Methodist minister, How this may be is impossible to gay. Others think it was simply a stray shot, which is very probable.
