The Streets All on Fire—Fearful Devasta- tien Wherever the Fluid Spread—Houses Burned—A Lake of Fire—Another Vietin— Death of C. C, Williams, the Father of the Childven—Full Details of the Accident, dec. . Narrowsnura, N, Y., August 28, 1866. At about two o'clock on Sunday morning a train of some forty-five cars, loaded principally with coal oil and hides, stopped at the Narrowsburg station to wood and water, Many of the oars contained tho oil in huge tanks, two om each car, holding probably fifty barrels of oil each in open bulk, the rest being in barrels upon box cars, At the end of the train was what is called a “caboose,” or rongh carriage for second class passengers, After stopping here a while the conductor, James Fredenburgh, distinctly heard the whistle of an “extra” freight train which was following, closely approaching. He hurriedly or- dered the engineer to “start the train immediately,” and was obeyed, but pulling out the valve too far for so heavy @ train, to use a railroad phrase, the train “broke,” or, in other words, the coupling which bound some of the ears parted, and a portion of the train stood still on the tack. Discovering the accident, the engincor was sig- nalled to back up, which he did, while the conductor, brakemen, and passengers in the calabooso ran up to make the connection. Just as they were doing so the other train came upon them, but having ‘slowed’ for the purpose of stopping at the depot, had very little momeatum, and simply ran the engine tinder the caia- boose, and nearly covered itself up with the debris. THE PXPLOSION, At this moment the conductor approached with bis lantern to hook on*the couplings, when, instantaneously, the explosion took place .,fr. Fredenburgh was thrown somo twenty fect from t ot down an embankment, and is much injured by burns and braises, THE SVREAD OF THM CONFLAGRATION, When the explosion took place the petroleum was throw from the tanks in every direction, and with it the remorseless flame, until it spread on all sides, Directly opposite the spot where the first explosion occurred, on ono side, stood three comfortable country cottazes—two of thom belonging to Mr. A. 8. Hendricks— the other to Mr. Joseph Bovine, the village blacksmith, in which he and ‘amily resided. The most distant one was occupied by Mr. Hendricks, while the lower part of the thor way occupied as a jokiers’ shop. In the upper part Mr, Charles C. Williams, bis wife and two children, the latter aged respectively about (wo and a half aud five years. Tho oil and flaine were thrown about in such quantities that before Mr Williams had time to become thoronghly awakened the fiery brands were fatl- ing in his sleoping room. ‘Then other explosions were heard in quick succession, and it was the itapreesion of ail that their Louses had been struck and set on fire by lightning. Mr. Williams sprang from his bed, seized his two chiudren, and sliouting to lus wife to foltow bim, ru down the insice stairs lo the stoop or porch, with steps which led down by the side of the house. In bis ex- citement he evidently never saw that the whole street throngh which he was plunging—was one living mass of bia: half kneo deep—and onward be went, dashing into the fire in almost a nude siate-—having on nothing but his night garment. In traveling through this sheet of flame, one of hs children cropped from his armas. and he went back and picked it up. His determination pad strength sustatuing him, he reached a spot where the fire had not yet spread and fell. He was picked up by bis negbbors, and with his children was taken to a hotel near by, where, ax hus been previously stated, the ctildren both died and have since been buried. MOTHER ASD CHILD PONG WELL, Mre. Williams, who ts represented as a very cool, quiet woinan, took & more comprehensive view of the on of ‘affairs, and, instead of following ber husband, threw borself over the baiustrade into Mr. Hendricks’ porden, and after pi. vome twenty rods fell, where she ®as soon found, and having nothing on but her cherokee, a blanket was ured and abe wis removed to the house where lier busband had been taton, and in the course of 2 vg 7 od hours was deliverd of a acc oe en onal tos feu bpcareeeoonmenscore e by the carting of her HOME and sharp stones, and the natural rasaits ef Ler acoonche- meant. ” 3 ANOTHER ViCTON. Mr, Williams’ feet and jeys were horribly burned; so much vo that the flesh peeled trom the bone while the doctors were droming them. He was better the float part of to-day, and some bopos were entertained of his recovers ; but attor Ungering in tho utmost torfure untii four o'clock this afternoon he died. ; A SEA OF PITRE, this time the flames had communicated to the Erie Ratiroad Company's carpenter shop, bide house nud two hand car houses, Filteen cars of the train were ino beg Woon sixtecn tonics rennin forth and were distant fercoly.
