THE PUBLIC CONVEYANCES OF NEW YORK. & Suggestion as to Cheap Cabse—The Street Cars Uncemfort: ‘The Stages Crewded— A Ride at Will, Not by a Particular Route, Wanted at a Low Price. Among the aumerous commoditios necessary to the comfort of tho inhabitants of a great city, easy end convenient vehicles for the conveyance of the public are woquisite. This ts especially the case in New York, for ‘the city covers such a large area of ground that it isa matter of no small consideration with many peoplo how to reach the places of their deetination, The horsecars, pf course, greatly facilitate locomotion; but nearly all of ‘hem run in the same direction, and the difficulty is ‘chielly felt in croasing the avenues. For this purpose it ‘ds necessary to have cheap public backs, to be hired by the milo, aa ia the case in all large European towns. To ‘obviate the extortion now practised by the drivers the charges should be fixed by law. It is an unnoces- ry expense to bo obliged to pay for the use of two horses and a largo, heavy carriage, when a small CAB, OR COUPE, would answor the same purpose, and be far more com- fortable. There is a Hansom cab now, such as is in vogue in all English cities. If an enterprising capitalist, or a -company, would start a number of these cabs, charging twenty-five cents per mile, they would meet with the patronage of a large number of business men, who now make use of the stages, &e., faute de miews, Very many people would gladiy pay half a dollar for a cab, to obvi- ate being obliged to take their chances of finding stand- ing or rather hanging room im en over-crowded car. Even whea sitocessful in obtaining a seat, it ia far from (Pleasant (© have one’s toee continually trodden upon, and, if the weather happens te be rainy, to have one’s legs used a8 a temporary umbrella stand, or to receive the drippings from those, who fresbly drenched by Aquarius watering pot, joyfully bail the car’s friendly shelter, regardless of the discomfort of the more fortu- nate passengers. THE DIFFICULTIES OF TRAVEL, It often happens that a gentleman on bis way homo from business, after the fatigues of a hard day’s work, congraiulates ‘himself upon having secured a vacant Beat, but, alas! he bas counted big chickens before they are haiched, The car is quite full, but nevertheless a lady enters, takes a quiet survey of the passengers, and chooses her victim. She plants herself immediately ‘m front of the gentieman in question and he cannot do otherwise than riao and offer his seat, for which courtesy be rarely receives thauks; on the contrary, the lady con- ‘Siders it merely her due, ‘and any remark on the subject unnecessary, Poor man’! his pleasure is at an he ‘ust finish his homeward journey hanging on by a strap to the roof, which reminds the traveller of a piace cailed the “deep cellar,’ in Hamburg, where, for ‘the consideration of one cent the bomeless and desti tute are permitted to take their night's rest standing, supporting themselves by resting their arms and heads ue nee stretched from one side of the apartment to he other. THR STACKS. ‘The same remarks are applicable to the stages, which ‘aro less agreeable for traveling even than the cars; for, owing to the badness of the Toads or of the vehicles ering, one is continually subj to joltings and ngs, which is suggestive of being put into a barrel olled down a steep, rough bill, a favarite mode of parontient mong the ancient Romane. This pitching ‘aod rolling is Ealeriy interesting when two or three ‘people are obliged to stand; for they are then thrown ‘upon those seated on either side, it ia to add, are received with an: vag | but open arms. up town of an afternoon four 0 ‘block itis utterly impossible to tind a vacant seat ine ieee anywhere above Wall stroot, aud a long time often elapses before one can obtain oven a footing in one, This fact alone proves that ovcnr AOMBTEING TO BE DONR for the public donveyance, and that eny undertaking for ce purpose, woll managed and ecneibly arranged, would sure to moet with success. ‘The cars and stages do not snffice for the wants of the Ipbabitants of New York, cepecially, as it has already been remarked, because they a!) travel in one direction, and the curriages now plying for bire are too large ‘and ‘uncomfortable and far too air ne; oho to pane [nad people to adopt them for dai entct, is drawn by only one hore, is Bp lighter eral traverses the ground much more quickly—could supply Bu r accommodation at a much lower rate. re has boon a great deal said about constructing an underground, or some other nny of railroad, for relieving Broadway of part of its travel; ‘this ever comes to pass or not, several years wall certainly elapse its compietion, and by that time the travel ma may have fucreased no much that everything will be at astand Ati from the overcrowded state o! nfares, esis even now oorasionally the case thing should be done at once, and « leferred until (o-morrow which can be iow York is vary empty at present, but it will be fonnd thas ‘The war, that for a space did fail, Now (rodiy ‘uundering, swells the gale, and as winter once more approaches, the evil will be found to ia a, when those wLo are now sojourning at the watering places and in the country return home ged the city hogius to fill n. There are plenty of ing capitalists here, who only require an assu- gunce of a fair prospect of success to embark their for- tunes in such @ 4peculation. Why do not some of them make bay while tho sun shines ¢ UNITED STATES COMI ‘The Allvaed Murder on oi Ship In the Bay of rmo, Sicily, Before Commissioner Osborn. A private letter from Mr. Henry Fergusou, published in the Stamford, Conn., Advocafe, gives an account of the remarkable sufferings of the crew of the clipper ship Hornet, bound from New York to San Francisco. On the 3d of May the vessel crossed the equator, and waa within three days’ sail of San Francisco when some varnish ignited in an open lamp, and in a fow minutes the ship wasin dames, There was no chanco of savin, her, and the crew, numbering thirty-one, manne three boats and put in provisions for ten or twelve days. They continued together from tho 3d to the 19th of the month, and finding it impossible to stow their boats any longer thoy separated, and the boat in wh: Ferguson was beaded for Clarion Island, latitude 18,12 north, longitude 114, but the trade winds, inatead of coming from the east, came from the aorth, accompanied with such a sea that it would have been suicide to beat inat it. On the 30th they gave up looking for this nd changed their course to the westward, look- uster of islands which was laid down aa “oubt- By this timo their provisions had nearly given were obliged to depend considerably on nd birds aa they could catch. After spending nearly a week in looking for thoxe islands, without success, they ped thoir course for Hawati, a distance of nearly a thousand miles, with little more than aknuckle of ham and one car of “soup and boutll During the last four days their suf- ferings were very ry greet, am during that time they had nothing ut two gills of Water and such nourishment as they could extract from greasy rags and boot leather. On Friday, June 13, after forty-one days’ exposure to a Pe pose sun, storm and starvation, they saw land, and in the afternoon landed at a little settlement of natives po Laupahoehos, in the island of Hawaii. At the timo they iaaded, the crew, fourteen in number, wero ver: weak, and could scarcely move, but they were moet wit! kind attention, and wore fast regaining thoir strength. NEWS ITEMS.
