W OSOWNTEN — ry sund people, nestled in the beautiful valley of’ the Over ereek, almost under the shadow of the Green Moun- taiug The air is pure and invigorating—the scenery heantiful and picturesque, Chipman’s bill hack of the town rises to the height of about three hundred feet, aud afiords a eplendid view of this valley, with the numerous hills and mountains adjacent. Dunmore Lake, a beautiful sheet of water, lies embosomea in those hills to the eastward, You wooded range on the northwest is Snake Mountain, from whose top a magnificent view of the Champlain Lake and the vast Adirondack range—tbe Alps of the North—is afforded. Otter creek, which is ‘a respectable river by the way, is a curiosity. From its entrance into Lake Champlain from Vergennes it is navigable for steamboats a distance of #ix miles. Then, for a distance of about twelve miles to this place it is broken by falls. Belden’s Falis, a few miles below, is really a romantic cataract, by which the stream passes. over and throngh a ledge of rock by a fall of about thirty feet. The surroundings are in their natural ro~ mantic state, and the spot is o great resort for picnic «parties, At this point also there is a fall of about twenty-five feet, whieb is partially employed for manufacturing purposes, South of this the stream is navigated by a steamer of pretty good size, for 47 to Sutherland Fails, The North Middlebury Mar- ble Company have opened an extensive bed of tine mar- ‘ble about three miles north of the town, which promises to be as remunerative as a gold mine. This valley is cel- res and cattle, but also for Spanish merino sheep, intro- duced by the Hammond brothers. This is superior to any gold inine that has been recently opened. These sheep are raised for stock and command fabulous prices, almost throwing horseflesh into the shade. When abuck is valued at $5,000, a yew at $3,000, and lambs at from $1,000 to $1,500, you may consider that woo! has riz, A respectable fortune might take sheep's legs and walk off. ‘Tho special pot of interest here during the present. week has been the commencemont exercises of Middle- dary College. This institution is the lion of the place, and @ very respectable one it is. It was established In 1800, and has graduated elovon hundred young men, great numbers of whom have attained to distinction both in church and state. Among her sons are enrolled tif- teen members of Congress, five Governors and six Judges of Superior Courts. Among the most distinguished of these are Silas Wright, Sotoinon Foot and Judge Nelson. The college has persevering}v held on its courre, striving to turn out men thoroughly discipiined and furnished for the work of life. It has experienced great adversities, but the day scems now to dawn upon*the expectant eyes of its friends, They are actively engazod im raising $100,000 to add to the endowinent, and expect shortly to see it accomplished. When this ts done they will ha $175,000 interest paying funds, besides lauds which are on lease, The college buildings are spacions, and oceupy a beautiful site of thirty acres upon the western side of the town. They contain a respectable library, cabinet aud apparatus. The college oecupies one of the best pos- sible situations and ts fortified in the hearts of the people. On Tuesday the college societies held their anniverse- ries. The Philomathesian was addressed in the moruing LB Hion, George F.
