The orange tree is, without exception, ‘we most Deautiful as well as the longest ved of fruit ‘wees. Its dark green foliago contrasts strangely and ‘beautifully with its golden fruit, aud if ‘the orange Itself ‘29 not the richest in flavor there are few that can vie with i tm the fragrance of its perfume during blossom. As am instance of its longevity, there stands at the present time at Versailles a tree which was sown in the year 2421, and is still recognized as one of the largest and ffmest in France. The trees grow best in decp rich loam, and in their native country attain the height of one bun- zed fect. HOW GATHERED AND BOW PACKED, ‘The season for picking oranges to be used in transper- tation to this market commences in November and ends im April, They are plucked from the tree when green and allowed to ripen on the passage. When pulled they are wrapped in paper and placed in boxes to be for- ‘warded to port for shipment. After they arrive at port ‘they arc taken from the boxes and examined, and those @mcovered in any way injured are laid aside und the wemainder repacked, After going through this process they are ready to be placed on board ship. FRINCIPAL DEPOTS OF sUPPLY—1 IMPORTED—3088, By far the greater bulk of the oranges received at this pert is obtained from the Mediterranean—Naples, Pa- Jermo and Mersina being the principal depots. The supply this season has excoeded any for the past few years. The nuwher of boxes imported during 1864 amounted to 250,896, while for the present the number ‘will bo fully one-third more, the returns up to April having been 493,667 boxes. The number of oranges in each box is about 050, Fully one-third of the fruit im- ported is rendered useless for market. The voyage lasiz about two months. INFERIOR FREIT—NOW SOLD—-PRICER, Mich of the fruit brought into the market this season was of an inferior quality, The yield being an unusually: large one, and the demand bere brisk, it was shipped in Jarge quantities, 11 is generally sold atauction, and itis, therefore, dMcult to ascertain the price. A cargo of eranges a few days ago only brought $2 a box, while amadiber cargo subsequently sold well from $8 to $10 per bex. They cost in Europe on an average about $2 per eex. It was the most destructive for years, large trees being torn from their roots, houses blown down, and the moat destructive havoc left'in evidence of its violence upon any and all things it wae possible to injure, The country and islands adjacent to the coasts suffered terribly, AS an evidence of ts destructibility on Pearl Cay, a small island off the comet of Nicaragva, which contained throe thourand trees, pot one been left standing; the house in whieh their owner lived was blown away, and he and his family were either killed'or drowned, Other locali- ties enflered in a greater or lesser degree.
