2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tozspay, June 26—6 P. M. ‘The gold market continues to absorb a large hare of the speculative interest of Wall street, and operations in stare mainly for arise. ‘This morning the opening price was 16414, lollowed by a steady advance to 107 at one o\lock, It subsequently reacted to 15514, but recovered to 19634 and finally closed at 15534. The supply of gold for delivery was moderately easy, but loans commanded from 1-82d to 1-16th per ceat per diem in favor of the Jendor of the coin. ng to the banks of this erty holding only eight and ‘a balf millions of specie and the ‘Treasury reserye being Jow the bulls are enabled to retain control of the market and twist the “shorts” at their discrotion, The prospect of the new tariff causing @ rush to pay daties on goods in bond affected thereby ut the same time strengthens their position. The probable demand for gold from this ‘nowrce is, however, exaggerated alike with the amount of goods in bond. The stock of foreign merchandise | bond at tbis port on the Ist of May was valued at $20,155,543, according to the Custom House returns, and it is now estimated at about thirty- five millions, How far the changes in the tariff will affect this is as yet a mattor of surmise only; hut it is not improbable that the new rates of duty will go into effect very soon after the passage of the law, aud those who can anticipate the action of Congress will bo eager to doo, In this way asudden demand might spring up for nearly double the amount of gold now in the banks, and the speculators would not be slow to take wdvantago of it. The fact that more than nino millions of coin interest on the public debt falls due on the Ist of July will, howover, tend to ease the condition of the market. It is generally expected that the next few steamers will report semewhat lower quotations for American se- curitics in London, owing to the advance in gold on this side and tho Foutan raid into Canada, At the date of the Moravian’s departure from England, no later advices from America than those of the 2d of June had been re- ceived, ond at that time the Fenian-Canadian sensation bad not assumed its full propor!ions, while the English journals had not b me to comment upon the exploits recorded in the New York newspapers of the date mentioned, .+ the last sctiloment on the London Stock Exchange is, however, reported to have developed a scarcity of five-twentios and Evie railway shares, and a8 speculative shipments are to be made to-morrow in consequence, it 1s possible that any material decline may be checked by the local condi- tion affectiag the market. The steamers which sailed bonce on the 2d inst. reported gold on that day at 14035 8 14134, while those gailing on the 6th quoted it at 14375 a 145%. Although there can hardly be sald to be any substan- tial improvement in the tone of business on tho Stock Exchange, limited efforts are boing put forward to impart activity to it, To-day Erie has been the subject of a bull movement, aud the soarcity of the stock for deliv- ery, which caused 1-22 a 1-16 per cent per diem to be paid for the use of it, was fayoruble to an advance ; but it struggled upward feebiy, and the improvement was hardly sustained. The expericnce of the last few weeks has shown that the holders of stocks are not willing to sell them at current quotations, and a brisk bull movement will doubtless succeed the prevailing stagnation and speculative apathy. The state of tho money market and the carnings of the railways are ‘equally favorable to this, At the early session of the opon board Erie cold at 593 47%, Michigan Southern 78%, Cleveland and Toledo 10614, Rock Island 94%, Northwestern preferred 591 Canton 6435.
