1 YACHTING. (nnual Review of the Squadron of the New York Yacht Club. Brilliant Gathering of Hardy Sellors and Delighted finitors, Whe Yachts im-the Line and Their Owners. " (INCIDENTS OF THE DAY. ke. de. ye. ‘The annual inspection and review of the squadron the Now York Yacht Club took place yester: y afternoon, and although not so numerously at- as was anticipated, was a very elogant affair and Passed off to the entire satisfaction of all concerned. The ‘@uccession of easterly galea that had prevailed for some ‘days previous, succeeded by @ strong westerly wind yos- ‘torday morning, resulted in chopping up the sea in the bay to such an extent as to render the rendezvous ‘Axed upon—the Horseshoe—an undesirable locality for Nhe performances of the day, inasmuch as the fair visi- ‘tors would find .it extremely unpleasant to pass from racht to yacht in a rough sea. In consequence of this Brat for interference, after the assemblage of a umber of the yachts.of the squadron at the appointed }, orders were received to weigh anchor and move up fo tho leo of Staten Island, where smoother water would "ee found. This change of locality consumed much time, that the hours of daylight were more than half ‘wpent before the squadron was in position and ready for ihe review. : THE VISITORS. At ten o'clock 4n the morning the elegant steamer River Queen, chartered by the club, loft the city with a Yarge party of members of the club, their ladies and in- rvited guests on board, and a band of music, and pro- ceded to the Horseshoe, whence she accompanied the @eot to the upper anchorage, The United States govern- wment steamer C. W. Thomas, haying on board Major ‘@enerai Van Viiet, Chief Quartermaster of the Depart- jment of the East, and a select party of ladies and gentle- tmen, was also early at the locality to participate in the hinteresting ceremonies and festivities of the day, The velegant English steam yacht Octavia, ownediby Mr. Kin- rd, the well known representative in this country of nglish interests in American railways, was also present, richly decked out for the occasion in holiday attire and her docks and cabin graced by a numerous and highly select y of Indias and gentlemen. The steamer William Piso bearing a private party of gentlemen of the reas, and several other vessels, not of the squadron— ‘the names of which could not be ascertained—also spent *ehe day observing the interesting spectacle. INSPECTION. The iateness of the hour at which the squadron was Yeady for inspection rendered it necessary to forego all manouvring of the vessels and confine the proseedings 0.8 general inspection. Everything being m readiness for this ceremony the ‘small boats of the several yachts wut off tothe various visiting vessels, and securing loads € fair ladies and their companions proceeded on the wads, calling at the different yachts, on all of which ‘®y were received in the most courteous manner and tertained in a style peculiar to the gentlemanly com- \nders of the crafts composing this famous club. APPEARANOS OF THR YACHTS. teveral of the yachts were elegantly decorated with and one was provided with a band for the delecta- {of its visitors. “All present were in fact dressed heir best attire, and presented highly creditable ap- tances, betokeming a degree of seamanship among tofficors that would win compliments for ofticers of regular naval service. The bright and attractive corms of the club, worn” as well by officers crews, added much to the éclat of the occa- . The neatness everywhere observable throughout fence squadron was @ feature uviversally noticed, and one ‘that rendered the visits of the numerous ladies in every “way agreeabie. ABSENTEES. It was a matter of great regret that so few vessels of ‘tho equadron were present at the review. Of the forty- ene yachts belonging to the club but eleven presented ‘themselves for mspection. The cause of the absence of (ehe others was not stated. Among those present, how- ‘ever, were some of the finest and largest, as will be seen fey the following brief description of the yachts [present :— THE FLEETWING, ‘beautifully modelled and flying a blue and red private signal, inclosing in the field a white F, sat like a swon ‘wpon the waves, This schooner is the property of Mr. Goorge A. , of New York, is of two hundred and ix tous burden and two thousand two hundred and @ight equare feet area, THR MAGIC, owned by Commodore William H. The final excitemont attendant upon the annual ex- amination was the cadet ball last night, which took Place in thé academic dailding. ‘This hotel ponred out its beauty and its chivalry in the neighborhood of balf- past eight. Carriages from the vicinity brought up a charming freight of beauty and fashion. Stages from Cozzens’ Hotel came equally well loaded, The cadets— those who were to depart next. morning, and those who were to remain—seemed to realize the pleasures of out- side life on this occasion. The graduate class—indepen- dent genticmen now—dropped in with, ladies on their arms looking like men of the world. The cadets of the other classes, though full of life and fun, looked the humble discipline-ruled cadet still, Although the company numbered some three hundred, and the principal ball room was limited In ex- tent, there was neither crowding nor confusion, Under the able management of the committee ali went off eventy and delightfully. The compayy danced in the examination room; shey danced in the corridors, they danced in the entrance hall, they danced in the fencing room down giairs, which was reached by crossing the gymnasium over tho tun-carpeted floor, upon which was laid a rough pathway of boards, ‘upon which tripped fairy Wke feet, shod in kid and satin. Numerous army officers. were present, among them several distinguished ones, such as Generals Schofleld, Gilmore, T. W. Sherman, Cullum, .Webb, and others, Several of the Visiting Board were also there. Genera! Perrine, Major Millis and Judge Em. aa, Lobserved, The latter gentleman is Known to be an intimate friend of President Jobnson, and on dit a Prominent candidate for the office of Naval Agent. Gen- oral Cullum, serct disciplinarian though he is, in the Kindness of his heart permitted the cadets to continus the ball until one o’clock, a permission of which they avalied themselves to theJast second of time. The bail was like all military billa Gray coats, white pants, brass buttons, blue coats and gold epaulettes, black coats and white cravats flitted about in a labyrinthine maze up stairs and down stairs, to the mus c of three excellent orchestras culled from the post band. The “beauty and tashion” of New York was not very largely represent but I observed among the most elegantly dress ladies Mra. J. J. Roosevelt and daughter Mrs. Embery, Mrs. Judge Russel and daughter; the latter young lady spparentiy being to the cadets and army oflicers what the famous golden apple of the God of Discord was to the three goddesses of old—the challenge, ‘let the fairest take it,'' being changed to “let the bravest take it.’ Tho of “the post’’ were represented by Mrs. Colo- nel Black, Mrs. Keliogg, Mra. Captain Davie, Mrs. Wat- son and many others who were “at home’ on the occa- sion. If i had the henven-born gesius of Jenkins [ could deseribo the dresses of those ladies and the innu- merable others: perc Age in the absence of that gift, I can only say that youth, grace, beanty, and, to an an- practiced eye, oxquisite harmony of costume, formed a rama Which did pot tire after five hours of deligit- pi ball broke-up the band proceeded to Roo’ en tue up 's Hotel to serenade anybody who would be serenaded; but no one seeming to aspire to the particular honor, the serenads was to the mass of half-tired beauties and cavaliers who crowded the piazza, and the party broke up in immense merriment. in wi took place on the infantry plain at baif-; wiz. ing @ solemnity of more than usual! routine, there was Pla aye isc bila te shade of th utes uy wi in the of o mountains and baie in the cous sheen of the gun, tl departing he cadets wore drawn up in line, with the band on the Tight and Colonel Black, majestic and ue, stood with folded arms, tminovable, looking for the time ‘upon the * whose education he had so carefully tended for Jast four years. ‘Numerous carriages lag. thelr trelght on the round. To-day, dressed in citizens’ clothes, the young mengle parted for their homes, amid the cheers of their comrades, who had just assemblet to dinner, aud West Point shall know them as cadets no more. Sam Sharpley’s Minstrels and Combination Com. pany, including all the new stars, will be on the boards in the new piece, mew songs and elegant dances. ENGLISH OPEKA—THE ROBE OF CASTILE. Balfe’s florid work improves on repetidion and judi- clous cutting down. A very Inrge audience attended its second representation at the Brooklyn Academy of Ma- sic on Tuceday night. The orchestra, which on the first night at the French theatre dragged and mutilated the opera in such @ manner that even passable singing was out of the qnestion, was very different under the direc- tion of Mr, Dietrich. There was gradumted power and ‘expression instead of the mechanical, listless and ama- teurish manner im which the orchestral parts were ren- dered on Wednesday last. Miss Richings had » most ‘trying, and in many respects tedious rél+, and we hardy think it just of an audience to inmst om an encore after every air. The fact that she bore up without faltering to the end is @ suMicient proof of her success, If the Queen of Castile ever had such an ordeal to pass through as three acte of rondos, scherzi, trille, Ae. wo sincerely pity her. “The Convent Cell,” and “I'm but «simple peasant maid’ were the best airs that (le composer afforded her. Miss Harrivon had little to do or sing, but she made the most she could of it. Mr Castle ‘was alittle too lackadaisical as the dinguised King of Leon, and Mr, Campbell too tame as an arch-conspirator. ‘Their singing was admirable. Mr. Wylie is too Nights tenor for even the trifling part of Don fallust The drinking song in the first act, the succeeding quartet, and the laugbing trio and buffo dust in the wecond act, but some merit, The a, however, was very ‘aikereat from the first night oF Tepresentation. GREAT GATHERING AT SECAUCUS. Three Races and All the Fa- vorites Beaten, KNIGHTHOOD AND CLIMAX THE WINNERS, ke. ke. ke. ids hal ; The Hoboken races commenced yesterday on the Se- caucus course, a beautiful oasis in the Jersey marshes, over beyond Weehawken heights. The attendance of sporting and other gentlemen, was quite large, considering that the attractions of fat racing are Rot so great as those of hurdle racing and steeple chasing, which are usually set down in the programme forthe last days of the races. As early as nine o'clock in the morning speedy young bloods and sedate old admirers of good horseflesh, in goodly numbers, began the five-mile pilgrimage from New York to the course, and the commencement hour—half-past one o’clock— fousd the gtund stand crowded, and other available places fully occupied, mostly by strangers to the aoil of New Jersey. Patricians and peasants tagned out in force, and their good homor on returning home at night showed that the first day’s sports wero satistactory. A fair pro- portion of the visitors were lm@jes, who, If they don't thoroughiy understand the beauties of a Close race and the fine points of contending horses, give a vastly pieas- ing effect to the picture of a race course. F THE TRACK. Owing to the late rains the track was not in the best condition when the concourse viewed it first, but the gonial sun and the sweeping breeze made it passable later in the day. Indeed, eritical sporting mon, who examined it foot by foot witk an eye to wagers on tho endurance of the horses namod, pronounced itin excel- Jent condition when the first race was calfed. THE ACCESSORIES. There were the usual accessories to a race course in the shape of refroshiment stands and lager beer booths, venders of peauuts and hard. boiled eggs, with a sprinkling of stble boys and. hangors-on, who can taik horse more fluently than they can discourse on any other topic in the King’s Engl sh, All the forenoon these ‘accessories’? walked around tho a ensward in front of the etables, leading carefully lanketed stoeds and knowingly conversing about the coming contest, Meanwhile, the ladies, who came over to Secaucus in hackney coaches and’ emblazoned car- riages, were impatient for the sport to begin, Trains on the Erie Railroud ran to and fro across the mareh near the course avd contributed to swell the crowd of Spectators. At noon there were probably not less than four thousand foreigners on secaucas soll, peering into stables, discussing the flue points of veiled horses, and purchasing pool#dor the races. Mr, Somerindyke— familiarly known as Jake Somerindyke—sold the pools from the steps of the hotel, after the manner of an auctioneer. The bidding was risk, but the bidders failed to show a nice discrimination in the selection of horses. ‘The resuit of the races yesterday showed that four-fifths of them were egregiously mistaken, As will be seen by the subjoiped score, the horse Ciimax, who sold lowest in the pools, i tura solid everybody in the race. When the pool selling began to lag and grow heavy on Somerindyke's bands, an adjourn. ment.of the crowd was effected to'the rave track, and the grand stand was quickly filled with excited expect duts, most of whom bad money pending on the races which were to follow. Crauston, of the New York Hotel, a member in good standing of the four-in-hand club, drove down just then and contributed, with his party, to swell the galaxy of betters and viewers inside the fence. THE FIRST RACE. The first race on the programme was the Jorsey stakes, & sweepstakes selling premium of $300, for all ages, $50 entrance, play or pay, a haif mile dash, the winner to be sold at auction immediately after the race; but when the bangle sounded to horse only one of the three entries put in an appearance, the others paying forfeit, This one— Mr, McDaniels' chestnut mare—galloped around the track and thus ended the affair, little interest having beca takea by the spectatora in her performance, the majority of the cgowd being interested in the poot selling for TRY. SECOND RACE, “ which was also a selling race, for all ages, a dash of a mile and a half. .There was a vast deal of speculation on this race, Richmond, the winner of last year's Derby and the’ conqueror of Arcola this spring, being in tho race, together with Kuighthood, a noted ‘one from the West, besides a chestaut colt, out of Mil- wood, by Monarch, anda chestnut colt. by Mohican. As & matter of course, Richmond became a great favorite at once, and a number of pools were suid in which he brought more thun all the others combined. About the time, however, that the horses were brought on the course a better feeling for Knightbood was ox hibited, and ho sold just before the start for $200, while Richmond brought $215, Peace Maker $65, and the Mohican colt $20. Richmond and Knighthood, by the conditions of the race, had to carry one hundred and four pounds, while the other two had but ninety pounds to put up. ‘There wax a great deai of speculation, and ed to well on the race antl the awaiting the tap of the drum to send them flying away. It seemed a vory difficult inatter for the starting judge to get the horses together, and when they were staried Knighthood had the lead by several lengths, | Peace Maker second, Richmond third and the Mohican colt last. Old Abe, on Richmond, pressed his charge on the lower turn, and before they got to the homestretch they were all close Logether, Kniglihood leading one length, Peace Maker second,’ Richmond a good third, wili Mobican well up. Coming up th biean colt cut out the work homestreteh the Mo. Kichmond, i turm the nm colt stumbled and ne his rider, reemed to make po running afterwards. Knighthood then went to the tr closely followed by Richmond, and as they react backs oh they eremed yoked toget . A short strag: gle, and Knighthood was a neck abead at the quarter pol*; then Abe shook up the gray, and they ran side and side down the backstroteh, jump for jump. At the half. mile polo Knighthood was again @ short neck but as they ran into the lower t head, Atmore beautiful «tragg'e could not be had, or one more exciting to the beholders, They were still he hom at it goon berame perce Knighthood w ong est and that he would win the race, as Kichmond swerved stavgeringly to the right as"he got into the siretch, and Abo was seen at work with whip and # urging bim onward. The struggle for the lead was bref, « the aon of the Knight of St. George was soon elear of the gray, and he passed in front of the judges’ stand a win wer by two lengths, to the great amazement of thore who xuppored they faa ‘4 sure thing when they invested their money on Richmond. ‘ihe defeat of the latter is attributed to the straining he im running three mile heats with Kentucky at the Paterson races, from which he had pot entirely recovered. The following is a suin maty of the race :— froom» Rack —Helling premium of $300, for all ages, ‘one and a half mile dash; horses entered to be sold for $1,500 wo carry their appropri ; those od Ww be sold for $1,000 allowed sew : ed to be sold for $500 allowed fourteen pounds; the wi ner to be sold at auction immediately after ‘the race; entrance to the race five per cent, to go to the second horse.
