PINANCIAL Ane COMMERCIAL. Saronpar, June 16—6 P. M. ropean news received by the City of Paris this Pees joo the gold market to open at an advance of six per cent upon the closing price last evening— hamoiy, 1543;—from which point {t rose rapidly to 156, qnd then, after relapsing to 15534, took « fresh jump, which carried it to 160% at two o'clock. The excite- ment in the room bad, meanwhile, been very great, and he demand for loans of gold from the bears was heavy. "Meso were made at the high rates of 3g @ 6-16 per cont per diem in fayor of the lender. After the time for making deliveries had expired—a quarter past two— there was some abatement of activity and excitement, ‘and at half-past two the price had sunk to 1684, but it subsequently rallied, apd the latest transactions on the street were at 1605. The bulls have complete control of the market, and are ‘milking’ the bears as their loagure; but the rise has already been excessive, and although the premium may go highor it ts dangerously elevated on speculative props, The export of specie by this day’s steamers aggregated $2,087,000, of which the Hermann took $300,000, the Etna $750,000, the Ville de Paris $650,000, and the Allomannia $887,000, making for the week $6,163,199. The total export from this port and Boston stuce the 24th of April bas been, according to the official roturns, a8 undor:— Wook ending April #8 Woek ending May 6. Week euding May 12 Week ending May 19. Weok ending May 28 Week ending June 2. Weok ending June 9. Wook ending June 16. ‘Total.. fhe effect of the heavy gold shipments from the United States was beginning to be folt in the London money market, which was working easier, although the Bank of England discount rate remained at ten per cent. ‘The latest arrivais of specto steamers prior to the 7th of June were those which left here on the 23d of May, since which we have exported about twenty-four millions and a half; so that we have yet to hear of the full effect of our prompt response to the calls of our European creditors, which private letters received to-day acknow- ledge to have exerted a most reassuring influence in tho monetary world, while enhancing the estimation ip which Amencan credit is held. ‘The continued depression on the London Stock Ex- change is doubtless owing to the threatening aspect of + $41,365,528 affairs on the Continent and the failure of the conference echome through the indisposition of Austria to accede to terms which would render it possible with any prospect of satisfactory results. Rut financial matters in England appear wo have reached such a point that the actual outbreak of war would bo a positive relief, to be followed by a recov. ery of confidence in valuea and higher prices, This country bas at the same time nothing to lose by a Euro- Pean war, however much pretentious but ignorant per- @ons may arguo to the contrary. Such a war would create an oxtra demand for our breadstuffs, and probably for our securities also, without materially advancing the price of the former, The flow of gold would likely be reversed in our favor, as capital in times of war and civil commotion invariably seeks the safest investment, and the United states being remote from the present Eu- ropean comp! cations, we offor better security as well as a bigher rote of interest than apy nation of the Uld World. As for our markets for cotton and such other raw and manufacturd articles as we have to export, they are wide enough to be independent of the threatoned war. Oure is an exceptional case under exceptional circumstances, and we have more to gain than to lose by the probable course of events in Germany and Italy. The daily range of the gold market during the week was as wuder:— There were no noteworthy transactions in foroign ex- change, and rates were nominally the same as yesterday. The heaviness in the market is attributed in some de- Gree to sales ot borrowed bills for gold by parties “short” of the latter, who wish to escape the heavy rates of intorest charged for loans of coin. The closing quotations for American securities on the London Stock Exchange on the 7th inst. show a slight decline as compared with those previously reported, but coneols were a traction bigher, as will be seen by the following table; — June? The failure is attributed in a great measure to the distrust cre- atod by heavy ‘bear’? operations in its shares on the Stock Ex. hange.
