Wholesale Desertion of Officers and Men. TWE ENTERPRISE ABANDONED. “Phe United States Government Furnishing the Troops Transportation Homeward. le Desertion of the Di isheartened Fenians at St. Armand—The Demorsl- Asation Complete—The Border Recrossed and the Raiders in St. Albans, &ec, BLBCIAL TELEGRAM TO THE NEW YORK HERALD. Camp Sweeny, Canada, June 9, 1866. ‘The crisis has arrived at iast. Tho culminating point Ym the fortune of the grand Fenian army has been weached, and the probabilities are that before night we ‘mhall be out of Canada and on our way home. ‘The demoralization of the whole force is complete, and Deth officers and men utterly refuse to do duty any Booger. Desertions have taken place by wholesale, and 4m many instances colonels have marched with theirentire cemmands and recrossed the iine, and are now retracing thetr steps homeward. The Fenian force at this point ees not number this morning over two hundred men, and iarge squads from even this small number are con- ‘tinually making their way to the rear. Colonel Coutri hhas just reported to hoadquartors that his regiment is totally demoralized, and that his officers refuse longer to do duty, and that many of them are starting for the Gaited States. General Spear, after holding a council of war, bas or- @red Colonel Coutri to form his men into Hine and march ‘them back to St. Albans, where he is to report toGeneral Bweeny. Colonel O'Connor next received his orders to Fecroes to Vermont, and he also seemed deoply affected. ‘Three English flags were captared during the stay of the Fenians at Camp Sweeny. SECOND DESPATCH. Rucar Wine Fesian Anwy, June 9, 1866. (@xders have been sesued for the officers at headquarters @o pack up, and the commanders to get their men over @e line as s00n as possible. Bome of the men—those who ame hero purposely to steal and plunder—are apparently very glad to be off with thelr ill-gotten gains; but others @ake it very hurd, and are accordingly grieved to learn at the whole thing has becn abandoned. ‘The eouncil of war which was held this morning was Dut of short duration, and it was then resolved that @ere was no other course now left for them but to re- @race their steps and give up the idea of invading Canada. ‘Phe reinforcements, arms, provisions and munitions of war that had been promised #o Mberally had failed to reach them, and, weakened as they were by such whole- eele skedaddling to the rear, it was deemed by the old @oldiers to be nothing but madsesa 10 remain alexe they ‘Wen were, as they would be wholly unable with such a small force to make even a decent show of a fight should they happen to be altacked, and it was therefore doe- termined to give up the intended invasion, leave Cavada and bead for the United States. ‘The men formed in companies, but many went off on thetr own responsibility, and about balf-past nine o'clock all that was left of the “right wing of the grand Fenian army” were marching back across the border for St. albans and other points on the Amenean side, The mep head ten or twenty rounds of ammunition each, aud im- mediately commenced firing off their muskets and rifles fm the most promiscuous manner. Arms, plunder, and everything elve that the men ould carry off with them on their retreat, were lashed ‘pon their backs or packed in satchel*, avd not a few had fall new suits of clothes and new hats and shoes ‘apon them when they started for home. Every man fwho bad not dostroyed of sold his arms carried thera eff, and some men carried a many as two muskets and two sabres, besides his other trappings. ‘The smmunition was carried over into Vermont by teams and stored in a barn about throe-quariers of a mile from the line. It is more than probable the United Brates forces, who are marching to the border, witl ‘poize it. All along the road on the United States mde, from the hue to St. Albans, large squads of men were resting wpon the hilleides or marching Jeisurely along, some quarrelling among themecives, throwing away their arms, fring of their guns, and others regretting that they had not remained a litile longer, as they wanted to gather more plunder. THIRD DESPATON. General Spear raid that he would rather have been shot than have left Canada in the manner he has All along the road he appeared execedingly pained and grieved. General Mahan spoke but little after the order to march homeward was given, but we once or twi found him weeping very bitterly. At Franklin Centre we mot a company of United Mrates rogulars marching towards the border, where the¢ 0 to provent depredutions ou American soil by either Fenians or Canadians. Any of the Fenians who bave not the necessary mesns wo carry them home will be furnished transportation by ‘the United States government. Many of them will avail themselves of this opportanity tw leave St Albans to night. Moat of the officers say that they are achumed of the ‘affair, and would rather never gohome Many of them avow their intention of casting thoir fortunes with their comrades who are still at Malone, although they give it an thelr firm conviction that there i not the slightest hopes to either aid of free Ireland by so doing. A number of men from the regular troope at St. Albans have been placed upon all the rouds leading into that town, with instructions to serze all the arms that the Feniatis may have in their possemdon. Ax the majority of them have either sold, broken of thrown away ther mouskets, cabres, £¢, it ts got expected that a very large stock will be collected. The whole affair has terminated moet dieericefully, ‘and Without ro much asa deceat akirmich having taken placo as a wort of apology for a fight There was too much whiskey and insubordination in the camp insure mocem, and not enongh military discipline Thero were, it 4 true brave and patriotic men who went to Canada to fight, but the most of them were cothing more or lest than an armed mob roving about wherever they pleased, robbing Gio hows. and insuliing and abusing wouem and obi- dren, The Fenian Invaders Back im St. bane—General Speer rrenders to the United States Authorities. SPECIAL TELEGKAM TO TUR NEW TORK HERALD. Sr, Annaxs, June 9, 1566, General Spear recrossed the line at ten o'clock thie morning He t# now at Franklin, with General Mahan, Colonel O'Conner, Colonel Contrie and most of the Fe- Bian tropa = At a council of warheld at two o'clock thi morning it was docded, for want of ammunition and guppies, to retrace their steps and return to the United Braves » Large numbers of O'Connor's end Comtrie’s men are arriving bere. It will be difficult to furnish transporta- don for them ali, es trains do nut ram below Rellivws Patio om ryndor. Ksste traing will have Wp be furmipbes, re ‘The British are still massing trodgs at St, Armand’s. ‘Orders have been given to keep all rolling stock of the railroads at the order of the British government, ‘The first indications of a tarbulent epirit on the part of the returned Fenians occurred to-day. United States Marsha! Henry conceived himself insulted by some in- temperate language from a Fenian officer and arrested him. The Fenians were also abusive to another State official and defied the United States authorities. Major Gibson placed a guard over the prisoners, and the Mar- shal called upon a civil marshal and declared that he should maintain the public peace at all bazards. General Spear and staff havo surrendered to Colonel Livingston, of the United States army. The latest reports from Pigeon Hill stata that about one hundred and fifty Fenians remain in that vicinity, declaring it to be their intention to make something out of the raid. No British troops were then there, General Meade and staff have arrived. Sweeny’s bail has been reduced to five thousand dollars, The Retreat Begun from Buffalo—The Entire Force Leaving for Home. SPECIAL TELEGRAM TO THE NEW YORK HERALD. Burrazo, June 9—2 P. The retreat has already commenced. Two companies from Chicago left this morning, under the command of their officers, It is expected that the entire force now in this city will be on their way home before Monday morn- ing. The men who arrived last evening—over ight bundred and geventy—state that they camo to Gght the Canadians, and will not go home unless they have a round with their old enemy, The leaders state that they have controlled the men since their arrival and promised that order will be maintained at all hazards, Dr. E, Donnelly applied to General Barry for govern- ment transportation for three hundred men, being the Pittsburg quota for the Irish republic. General Barry has telegraphed for instructions to Washington. It is pretty certain if the government does not send them home they are likely to stay here some time, Most of the men have no money, and General Barry’s Onler No, 2of yesterday prevents them from travelling on railroads, A movement was made by a body of Fenians up the lake shore last evening, and General Borry, fearing an attempt might be made to cross, had armed boats patrol- ling the lake for some distance. The balance of the Fenian officers were yesterday re- leased on giving bail in three thousand dojisrs each, Colonel O'Reilly, of Indianapohs, leaves to-night with ix hundred Feniaus for home, A company of the Fifty-fourth New York State militia was sent this morning from Roehester, by order of Gon- eral Barry, to the mouth of the Genesee river, to prevent the Foniaps from capturing the two Canadian steamers which ply daily across Lake Ontario, Genoral Barry had information which Jed him to fear a seizure of these two Orders the Fentans to Dis- Perse to Theirglomes.—Transporta' Furnished Them by the Government.— ‘The Order to be Promptly Enforeed. Some thought the course of the authorities in the matter was rather strange. One gentleman re- marked that the government were in sore straits whea they deemed it advisable to call on his friends and that of the movement to testify in this curious neatrality matter, Others predicted that Mr. Roberts’ trial would quickly end and that it would be impossible to sustain any charge against him, as he bad committed no breach of any existing law. THE RECRUITS, Crowds remained around the building during the day waiting for instructions and facilities for going to the front and showed considerable signs of discontent in not getting a chance of going to reinforce General Spear. Those who could furnish transportation were allowed to go during the day. When it became understood that the want of money ‘was tho greatest obstacle in the way, it was frequently asked, ‘Where are the rich Irishinen of the oity?” “What have they done for us?” “Where aro. the re ive men of our race whom we have carried on our shouldern and placed in positions of honor and emotument in the city and State governments?’ They were answered that up to this time they bad failed to come out, ROBERTS AND HIS FRIENDS. Many of Mr. Roberts’ friends were allowed to see hin egy atthe jail. To a gentleman who called upon im in the afternoon he stated that his mind had not at all changed; the movement would still be a succoza, defiance of the duplierty of scheming men. It is understood Mr. Roberts consents to have the ald of counsel at lis trial to-morrow, and it is considered the choice will fall on Mr. John McKeon, PREPARATIONS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF MR, W. R. ROBERTS to-morrow, before Commissioner went on briskly all day yesterday. Subpenas were ued from the United Ftates District Attorney's office for some twenty witnesees, including among othera several newspaper reporters. The papers were placed in the ander of the United States Marshal to serve and that officer —— Jater in the day that quite a majority of the new men wero at tho front, but that a sufficient number rf been found to answer the purpose, The majority of the other witnesses were also found. VISTPORS TO PRESIDENT RORERTS. - The Marshal's office was run down through the entire day by parties anxious to visit Mr, Roberts. Permits were iseued to a large number. Many who came and stated their motive to. be one of curiosity only were: re- fused. A select livt of names whom Mr. Roberts desired to se himself was furnished the Marshal, and for these permits were given good for Sunday, NO RECRUITING AT TAMMANY HALL. ‘The green flag floated from Tammany Hall as usual, Dut ne recruiting was done ther’. Crowds were assem: vied during the day and preparations were in progress for sending thom About five hundred laborers left for the mines out of those previously enrolled. MATERIAL AID. The cum of six thousand dollars in gold was yesterday received from San Francisco, with @ promise of #pe forwarding more, and requesting at the same tune thai the work be pushed through with spirit and vigor. AT THE STEPHENS HVADQUARTERS the principal matter of importance was that a demand was being made on Colonel Kelly, the representative of Mr, Stephens, to give up the checks in ix posession, which were to the order of P. O'Rourke to that gontle- man. It appears that when Mr O'Rourke was Treasurer nn- der the O'Mahony adminisWation be lodged 4 considerable #um of money in bank to the account of the Brother- ood. Afterwards, whon he chase to withdraw from the pale of that clueftain’s jurisdiction, he gave his order on bank for the amount. This rum O'Mahony did not draw until the Roberts party took a decided start, and then Mr. O'Rourke instracted the bank not to Da Sang drafts. The money still remains it the vaulte, Kelly bas the cheeks and Mr. O'Rourke cannot get the money, aud a disposition is shown to have the money made available in the present emergency. Mr. Kelly could do nothing before hearing from Mr, Stephens, and com- Munications to thatend aro now going on, MEPTINGS, Au ‘through the city a wish appears to exist to cot un a public meeting at no distant date, to give expressina to the feelings of the citizens on the action of the gov- ernment. The temperance mep will hold a meeting to- V, at 336 Broome wtreet, at eight o’slock P. M., for the parpose of rating » regiment. Mr. BL. Cary and others will address the meeting.
