2 NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, JUNE 7, 1866. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Weoxespay, June 6—6 P. M. ‘The speoulative feeling op the Stock Exchange has been rather tame to-day, and the advancing tendeney of prices which marked the course of business in the morn- fing was not fully sustained in the afternoon. Erie was in active borrowing demand, and 34 per cent was paid forthe loan of the stock, the excitement in which is gradually subsiding, There ismo change to note in the general temper of the market, which !s favorable to a general improvement, in sympathy with the increasing earnings of the railways, the rise of the gold premium and the prevailing monetary ease. The financial ad- vices from Europe, although unimportant, are at the game time reassuring. At the early session of the open board the market was, dull. New York Central sold at 99);, Erie 6534 a 34, Reading 110 (b, 3), Michigan Northern (b. 3) 797%, Oleve- Jand and Toledo 105, Northwestern 31% a }{—preferred 615 a %, Cleveland and Pittsburgh 84a 3, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 283, Western Union Telegraph 603. At the first regular board it continued quiet but firm. Erie closed % higher than at the half-past two board yesterday, Reading +¢,Northwestern 134 —preferred 13;, Fort Wayne 44, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 4, Canton %, Mariposa preferred %{. Michigan Southern was 3¢ lower, Cleveland and Pittsburg 34, Rock Island 3<. Government securities were stronger under the Africa's advices, reporting five-twenties at 6514 a % in London on the 26th against 64a %, the latest quotation Previously received. Coupon five-twenties of 1862 ad- vanced %; ten-forties 3. At the one o'clock session prices were without material change, except for Erie, which was % lower, At the half-past two board the market was steady at a slight decline. Erie closed % lower than at the first regular board, Roading 34, Michigan Southern %, Northwestern —proferred 134, Mariposa preferred }4. Illinois Central ‘was % higher, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 3. Goy- ernment securities were firm; coupon five-twenties of 1862 advanced 34, soven-thirty notes of the first series 1. At the open board at half-past three the market was dull but steady. New York Central sold at 98%, Erie 64 a 63%, Reading 109%, Michigan Southern 79 & , Northwestern 30%—preferred 60% a %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 845, a 84, Cumberland 46, Mari- posa preferred 2434. Afterwards the market closed steady, the quotations at half-past five being for New York Contral 98% a %, Erie 63% a 5, Reading 100% a 3%, Michigan Southern 793 bid, Cleveland and Pittsburg 834g a 5, Cleveland and Toledo 1043, a 105, Northwest- ern 30% a %—preferred 6114 a 34, Fort Wayne 9714 a Js, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 28%{ a 29, Canton 60 aM. The supply of money continues abundant to tho Stock Exchange at5a6 percent. In the discount line first class commercial paper passes at 6 a 7 per cent. Gold opened at 144% and advanced immediately to 145%, but soon after noon it relapsed to 1437; under the effect of the European news. Subsequently, however, there was agradual recovery, and the market closed firm at 144% a 145. Loans were made at from 3 per cent to 1-32d in favor of the lender, aaign that the borrowing demand is increasing rapidly in proportion to the supply. Tho export of specie by this day's steamers aggregated $3,675,000, of which the Cuba took $1,650,000, the Allep- Po $1,850,000 and the City of Cork $175,000. The range of the gold market since the commencement of the year bas been as follows:— Lowest, 137% 124%, 125% +1393¢ 12555 Foreign exchange was inactive, but rates were firmly maintained. Baukers’ bills on England at sixty days are held at 110in gold; three days 111.0%. Bilson Paris at long date 6.11% 05.8%. Double eagles are so scarce, that they command a premium of 3¢ per cent, andeeagles and half eagles 14 a 3¢ respectively, The extent of the improvement in prices reported by the Africa on the London Stock Exchange for Consols and American secu- ities, will be seen by the following comparison :— May23. Extensive improvements and repairs have been made during the past year, and pro- perty has been purchased in New York and Jersey City, giving space for an increased freight business, which, it is surmised, will Be needed on the completion of the connecting road at Philadelphia, which will enable freight to pass to and from the South and West without change of cars, © The business transacted at the Sub-Treasury to-day was as follows :— For customs Gold notes ‘the Pittsburg Clearing House statement 1s as follows: Balances, $62,041 T1865 87,405 83,933 20, $403,870 Mr. Albert H.
