Panis, May 18, 1866. ‘The novelty now greeted with unbounded satis{action In Paris is the new moon which made her debut op ‘Tuesday evening. It may bea fatal error to call s moon new; certain school reminiscences suggest that she is remarkably old, but we, who bave gone through a course of wind-nipped noses and lips pinched blue, do advisedly | call the April moon not only old, but spiteful, She has shown herself under the most forbidding aspects, every evening glaring down redly on the fashionable shop windows decked out in all the pride of spring novelties, When she did not think it convenient te show herself at all, she was brewing showers bebind the clouds or carrying en some secret plot with the sun, who, manlike, got led into evil at the instigation of @ wrong-minded female. Although he did once or twice give evi- dent signs of femorseful conscience, during which fita he would come out in his right ovlors, alill it was.clear he was controlled, and we foal assured he con- gratulates bimsclf on having /a roume exchanged for the fairibright thing that now beams forth queenliké among 8 myriad of glittering stars. Country excursions and seaside jouriieys were not thought of till yesterday; the Monday evening balls re kept up at court, and the theatres have bad aplendid houses. People have availed themselves, in fact, of every opportunity of “getting warm," and even- ing receptions have been more than usually crowded. It would naturally be supposed that the most delight- ful of all crowds in Paris must be those which are com- posed of ambassadors, ladies of honor, officers of state and other dignitaries, Here a dazzling display of orders, jewols and uniforms; there the prestige of power, name and genius; everywhere wealth, title and thoir belongings. It may be everything supposed “to look at,’ but it is not everything desirable “to be in.” I, who have had involuntary but very glorious jokes from dowagers’ olbows while laboring under the necessity of getting from one room to another, or sharp thumps from blushing maidene while struggling to secure a chair, know exactly how delightful such crowds are. I do not mention tears and rents from suspicious looking swords, nor scratches from epaulets, nor bruises and kicks fim the heols of gentlomen’s boots; these are too frequent occurrences and what people go to balls for. T only perpetuate things that might be avoided, such as a blow in one’s eyo from an attache after he has accom- plished a gastronomical triumph at tho “buffet.” Al- though the facer in my case was unintended, it was very disheartening, and none the less so for being fol- lowed by 4 “pardon me, madame,” which, however, mended matters as far as the culprit was concerned. Things might, nevertheless, have been worse. I was fortunate enough in this instanco to come across # good Samaritan, who provided me with a glass of pure water, in which I soaked the lace of my handkerchief, and, un- observed, defled a swelling ina retired corner. I was soon left alone to quiet nursing and not long after forgot my mishap im the enjoyment of looking on from my place of retreat, How I pitied the poor gitls wading through the quadrilles in such costly attire, so crusbed and torn! Itwasa relie! for most to dismiss their partners and return to their chaperons. One young beauty, however, never returned to any protection what- ever. I knew ber to be an Italian countess; but she was 60 well dressed on that particular evening and looked 20 lovely, that 1 was more than usuaily interested in her aad in her way of proceeding with her cavalior, who looked unmistakably English. After a mazourka ®@ talk; then a waltz and another talk; after which polka and a third talk, and always on the Englishman's arm, to the horror of all the Parisian mammas, It was @uring the rosta of a very full waltz that they both stopped close to me and that I overheard their conversa- tion, broken off and taken up though it was, after two lng turns of the room. First atop (Englishman)—“Now, I am not of your opinion, Countess Eva; this French way of boxing up girls in Paris is absurb, Talk to mo about the immorality of the place, this system of mounting guard around a woman is enough to make her immoral, and that's what they all are,”” Countess (looking around)—“Oh ! take care, Sir James, For shame |”” Englishmah—Not a bit, What if they did hear the truth for onte? I mean what I say, Do you call it moral to marry a man for the sake of getting rid of mammaY Or for expanding in ® ‘Madame,’ with a cashmere and diamonds, not forgetting the ‘dot’ to make oneself acceptable? I say the women here spend their youth in a state of crysalis. No wonder they wing their flight like butterflies when that process is over, If they were but harmless butierflies"—* + + Here a particular part of Gounod’s Vaise de Mire‘lle proved irresistible; turn and whirl the young couple must. They suddenly fell in the circle and were soon in their glory. Meanwhile, I will describe the Countess’s toilet, which, ba tLe way, would be very suitable for a summer teal material was gauze, with alternate white satin 8 ., the skirt long but without a train; the body and tunic were made of white satin, the jattor ent ovt all round in five long tails or basques, each trimmed with pink moss rosea in frills of gauze. The belt was a garland of mors roses, a bunch of the same on each shoulder, ovr streamers of white eatin, cm 1 the smallest possible Me sve, One rek moss rose was half concealed in a nest of Light curls on the Countess’s forehead. Pearls on her neck and arms cornpleted the toilet. T hind Juat noted these details, when the couple, almost tesa, were again by my side, ud stop, (Evglishman)—It is very nataral you should wish to know, and Tam very happy to answer your questions, In the first place, girls in my country have to tind oat a good deal by themscives, aid that is bet r than being taught, Then they are told to enjo; their dancing days as long as they can, because they will not last.’” Counies—"Tt is always better to know, of course; bat there itis, © * * As soon as woman is married in England her be me isa prison, and should sue be pretty of young, own that it very hard."
