2 —— FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tuunsay, May 31-6 P.M ‘The stock market has been firm but rather dull to-day, ‘owing to the prospect of an almost entire suspension of ‘usiness to-morrow, The speculative feeling is, how- ‘@ver, strong, and prices continue to show aa improving tendency. At the first open board Erie (sales 6,350 shares) sold at 59% 8%, New York Contral 98 a %, Reading 1003, Gioveland and Pittsburg 86% 8534, Michigan Southern 80% = 81%, Northwestern 28}—proferred 58, Fort ‘Wayne 97%, Canton 50%, Mariposa preferred 24}. At the first regular board the market was dull but steady. Michigan Southern closed 3 higher than at the hhalf-past two board yesterday, New York Central 3%. The latter company bas leased perpetually the now line of railway from Seneneotady te Athens, on the Hud- gon river, the terms being equivalent to six per cent on @ capital cost of $3,000,000, or $120,000 per annum. Brie losed 14 lower—preferred 134, Reading %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 3%, Fort Wayne , Western Union Telo- graph 5. Government securities were steady. Coupon Gvo-twonties of 1862 advanced 3. At the one o'elock sessions the market was firm and the transactions at the two boards in Erie agggrogated 13,200 sharea At the half-past two o'clock board it was dull bat steady. Erie closed % higher than at the frat regular board, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, North- ‘weaterm 3¢—preferred 34, Western Union Telegraph %, Missouri sixes 3{. New York Central was % lower, Reading 3, Michigan Southern %. Government secu- rities were quiet, Coupon five-twenties advanced 34. At the half-past three open board the market was firm but dull, Erie continuing the centre of attrac- ton, the transactions aggregating 12,900 sharea, ‘Tho latter sold at 60% a 61%, Reading 100% a° 36, Michigan Southern 80%, Cleveland and Pitts furg 843, Rock Island 934%, Northwestern 23},— preferred 583s, Fort Wayno 97% a %, Ohio and Missis- sippt certificates 251; a %, Canton 61 a %, Cumberland 45%, Quicksilver 5214, Western Union Telegraph 6034. Afterwards the market remained dull bat firm, and at half-past five New York Coutral was quoted at 98% a 1, Erie 6134 = %, Reading 100% a 3, Michigan Southern 80X a %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 84 a 3, Northweasern 285, a —preferred 58% a 3¢, Fort Wayne 97% a %, Canton 61 a %. Itis reported that at the moeting of the directors of the Erie Railway Company held yesterday its floating debt was stated to be $1,500,000. In addition to this the company ie understood to be indebted to one of its direc- tors, a woll known Wall street speculator, to the extent of two millions. It is represented that the company recently made an arrangement with the latter, under which it re- hypothecated the fourtoon thousand shares of common stock withdrawn from him when the lien was paid off ‘upon the occasion of the company negotiating its last loan in London. These added tothe fourteen thous- and shares previously in his possession leaves him the custodian of the original twenty-eight thousand sharos; in addition to which he is said to hold convertible bonds as security for the two millions advanced. The gen- eral impression is that the whole or a part of the ‘stock thus hypothecated has been thrown upon the mar- ket. There has, however, beon no over issue of stock. ‘The company, it is estimated, has expended for matertais and supplies during the past year three millions and a half, to which # adds from the construction account two millions and » half, making a total of six millions dis- ‘bursed during the year. Tho company owes it to itsown Teputation to publish a statement of ite affairs at the present juncture, when Wall street is full of scandalous Toports regarding its managoment. Nothing should be Aoft to inference that can be satisfactorily explained whore the inferences are so damaging. The gold market opened strong at 138% and advanced steadily to 140%, the closing quotation. Loans wero masde without intercst, and at 3a per cont for carry- ing. Om this day last year the range of the premium ‘was from 136${ to 18755. There was an export of fifty- five thousand dollars in specie to-day by the steamer Atlantic, Petroloum and mining stocks wore dull and generally lower. At the first board Bennehoff Run Oil closed Lic. Digher than as the same time yesterday, Rooky Moun- ¢ain 40c. Bennehoff Run was 100. lower, New York and Alleghany 5c, United States 0c. At the second board Bennehoff Run Oi! closed 200, highet than st the same time yesterday, selling at $3 80. ; Smith & Parmolee was 10c. lower, selling at $8 86; Electric Oil sold at $135, Clinton 760., Central $2 60, First National 9c., Oil Croek 670,, Benton $1 30, Gunneli Gold 890.: ‘The reguiar and open stock boards, the Petroleum and Miniog Exchange, the Gold Board and the Produce Bx- change agreed to adjourn business from this evening till Saturday morning in respect to the memory of Gene- ral Scott, The Custom House and Sub-Treasury will also ‘be closed. There will probably be some little business transacted fn the streot to-morrow, nevertheless, and moat of the brokers’ offices and the banks, as a matter of course, will be open. The money markot shows increasing case, and the rate for eall loans ie six per cent, with occasional exceptions upon government securitics at five. The disbursements of the Sub-Treasury to-day were very heavy, as they inelndod the redemption of about ten millions of the one year certificates of June, July and August, upon which in- terest has now ceased. The discount line is easy but dull, and first class commeroial paper is quoted at 6a 635 per cent, and at long dates 7. In forcign exchange the transactions have been light at yostorday’s quotations—namoly, 1003¢ a for bank- ers’ bills on England at sixty days, and 110) lll at three days.
