OUR FORTRESS MONROE CORRESPONDENCE. Fowtaxss Monaox, May 6, 1866. Secretary McCutloch paid us a flying visit to-day, Ac- companied by his wife, two daughters, and a daughtor of Postmaster General Dennison, he left Washing- ton at five P. M. yesterday, on the United States revenue cutter Northerner. It was only designed to go as far as Point Lookout, the object being @ pleasure sail down the Potomac river and back for recreation and health; -but the weather proving so unexpectedly delightful and the sail so charm- ingly agreeable—searce a ripple railled the smooth waters of the bay, and the misty and baimy haze of an Indian sommer day gently cloaded the dazaling sunlight—it was concluded to protract the voyage to this place, to tako a view of the Fort and its memorable surroundings—tho famous Rip Raps, which forty years of labor have not yet served to complete; Sewail’s Point, once studded with rebel batteries and awakening loudest echoes with the thundering roar of its cannon; Newport News, tho scene of that terrible naval conflict that lost to us many heroic lives, avd those splendid frigates, the Congress and Cumberland, and where once lay encamped tho Army of tho Potomac—and, if time permitted, to take a glimpse of Craney Island, so historically renowned in the war of the Revolution, in tho war of 1812, and in tho Inst and most fearful war of all, against the allied forces of the rebeliiour South. ARRIVAL OF BESETTING DIFFICULTIES, At eleven A.M. the cutter Northerner throw out its lines upon the Balti ‘steamboat wharf. Secretary MeCulloch and party, with Captain McGowan, of th utter, proceeded at once to the Fort, But neither the high officia! position of the distinguished visitor, or proper display of naval giit decorating the slceves aud shoulders of Captain MeGowan, could gain them ad- mission without a pass, “Tam Secretary McCulloch," plead the official head of our national finances, “J don’t care if you was President Jolneon himself, you couldn't co in here without a pass," insiated the unytelding sentinel, ‘A few minutes delay set matters right. Tho sentinel subtnitted the case to the corporal of the guard, who sabm;tted it to the sergeant, as next higher in rank, who sabmitted it to Captain Heck, officer of the day, who submitted it to.General Miles, who presented himself in 4 person, and who graciously allowed them to pasy in. After this which to some of the party must have revived recollections of that singularly cumu- lative chain of events connected with the house that Jack bullt, there was no further diMculty. The party enjoyed the freedom of the fort. Thoy walked to lead- quarters, took the round of the caromates and made the grand circnit of the parapet, that is to ray, the lady visit- ors and Captain MeGowan, who in the meantime had been introduced to and joined by several oticers and ladies of the fort. Of course such a request, coming from such a high official, could yot be refused. The interview lasted over an hodr. No one was present daring the interview. Not coming in an official capacity the visit of tho Secretary did not in the slightest degree pertako of the charactor of an offical visit, and it would be simply absurd to.attach to it the least 5 gnilicance as ‘7 upon the future disposal of Mr. Davis. A simple desire to see the man, and have a social chat with him as man to man, was, doubtiess, the controlling impulao and do- siro of the Secretary, And such was the nature of the interview. It waa nothing more than the social interchange of eae and feolings between two great minds. y topics, it to be Presumed, were discussed, In which the shrewd. cultivated and Incisive vigor of their diverse minds and yr, to in tae une k and betray a ia imprisonment, 5. = gpd Le Mr. nglied politeness to these diversions; but all that could be ‘wrung fr him vy his adroit interlocutor was the sim- ote eonfernee began, coutiaued. and. ended na the contina e a ee opinion ot Mr. Davis then before his talk with him is best known to himself, Whatever his impression, it is not at all probable that it will swerve Lim in the least from what in his high official charecter he considers bis daty to him as @ state prisoner. ‘A VISITOR TO MRA. The admirers of the “manly art of soif-defonce,’’ as iMustrated in the prizo ring, were regaled with an exbibi- tion of the physical endurance of two of its members— Sam Collier, of Baltimore, and Race Bolster, of this city— at daybreak this morning, near the White House land- ing, on the Virginia shore of-the Potomac. The steamer Wa- wasket was engaged to convey the delighted bolders of tickets bearing the mysterious inscription ‘tr. For an hour Previous groups were seen in alleys and opposite the principal drinking saloons of the city engaged in a sub- dued conversation in regard tq the merits of the ro- spective principals, Cbilier and Bolster; the possibility of arrest by the beaks, and the safest way of reaching tho steamer Wawasset, lying at, the foot of Seventh street, ready to convey tho passengers to their destina- tion, Quietly and one by one the holders of tickets, including theatrical men, barkeepers, bank cashiers and sports, wended their way to tho corner of tho avenue and Seventh street, where a posse of police was observed, who, however, did not interfere with the party, who, taking carriages, were soon at the steamboat wharf, The ticket bearing tho mysterious inscription was pronounced all right by the man at the gang plank, and the crowd to the number of about two hundred passe? on board. ALL ABOARD FOR OLD VIRGINIA'S smORE. The expectant crowd were not long kept waiting, and at one o'clock A. No xpecinl incident of intorest occurred during her passage except occasional muscular, but good- navured, cncounters between members of the fancy, who seemod determmod that the object of the midsion should be aceomplished without aay of the digeracesul seonos wh.ch sometimes characterize similar expeditions. ‘At early daybreak the Wawasset touched Glymont wharf, on the Maryland shore, but as objections wore raised to the contest taking place in Maryland she again put of for White House, on tho Virginia ede.
