BreapetTures, —Recei pts 3,510 bbls flour, 121 bags corm meai, 3,675 bush, corn, The market for State aad West- ern flour was very active, and prices again advanced, closing firm at an improvement of 100, @ 16c,, and, in some cases, of 20c. per bbl. The sales reached 15,000 bbls, at our revised quotations annexed. The demand for Southern flour was fairly active, and prices ruled in sellers’ fayor, with sales of 600 bbia at the subjoined prices, Canada flour was in moderate request, at an ad- vance of 10c. al5c. per bbl. The sales were 400 bbis, Rye flour was firm at previous prices, with further salea of 200 bbls. Corn meal was leas active, and prices ruled in buyers’ favor, with sales of 300 bbls. ‘at our quotations, We quote :— Sunpay, May 6, 1866. Business in Wall street during the past week hag been brisk, but without speculative excitement, The chief incidents of current interest were the Ross forgeries and the introduction of the Consolidation Loan bill in tho Senate. The now State law taxing brokers’ sales also attracted considerable comment, and provoked a good deal of honest indignation, the impost beimg generally regarded as equally unjust and unconstitutional, We understand, however, that Governor Fenton and the Attorney General have agreed to suspend the execution of tho law pending a legal decision upon the question, and a tost case is to be made and tried accordingly. If, as the State constitution says, every law which imposes, continues or revives a tax shall distinctly state the tax ‘and tho object to which it shall be applied, and it shall $7 40 a $7 00 Extra Stato 8 00a 8 65 ‘not be sufficient to refer to any other law to fix such tax | Choice State 8708 9 35 ‘Or object, the fate of the bill seems clear, Common to m 8650 925 ‘The new loan bill provides for the issue of bonds to run Extra round hoop Ohi eo thirty years and bear five per cent interest, the same to | Common Southern. 110 15 a 11 15 be callod the “Consolidated debt of the United States,” | Fancy and oxtra do 11 30 9 18 69 mmon Canadian. ‘and to be exempted from all federal and State taxation. | Go04'to choice and 9 30 012 60 ‘This last provision appears more important at first sight | Rye flour (superfine) 5 00a 625 than it really is; for, owing to the fact of more than en mee rig ES = a ro meal, Grandyw: three millions of our bonds bging held abroad, and a C meal, Brandywine, pun 22608 — large amount beyond, by parties whose incomes are under six hundred dollars, which exemption it is proposed to increase to one thousand dollars, only about one-sixth of the aggregate of the debt it is esti- mated is reached by the income tax on the annual inter- eat, And the income tax is the only one to which gov- ernment securities are at present subjected. It follows, therefore, that the loss consequent upon the entire ex- emption of the funding loan from taxation would be s0 light as to bear no comparison to the amount gained by reducing the rate of interest to five per cent, and moreover, it is urged that without the proposed exemption it would not offer sufficient induce- ments to the conversion of seven-thirty notes, which it ts specially designed for. The Senate Finance Committce will, it is understood, report it without material modifl- ation, and there is a probability of its bemg acted upon by the Senate during the next week or ton days, Had the period fixed for final redemption been fifty instead of thirty years, it would have been better, as the longer a stock has to run the higher its market value is supposed to be. ‘Tho provision contained in the same bill to divert tho 1001 —The market for wheat was quite active at an advance < 1c. a2c. per bushel The sales reached nearly 70,000 bushels at $1 65 for Chicago spring, $3 for oie Michi- gan, an, $2 50 for old winter red Western, $2 for No. 1 now ilwaukeo and $1 85 for No, 2 Milwaukee. We heard of no bysiness from first hands. A moderate trade was done by jobbers. Cortox.—The market fur middiing and ail grades above middling was very firm, with an advancing tendency. These grades were scarce, and not offered fro-ly, Shippers wero almost entirely out of the market, owing to the difference between their limits and the prices demanded, and the business was mainly to specu- lators and spinners, comprising 1,700 bales, mainly at the following prices:— savings of interest at the rate of thirty millions a year hr Florida, Mobile.
