4 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Saroxpay, April 21—6 P. M. The stock market has been very firm to-day, and the current of speculation for @ rise is becoming stronger and more decided as the monetary situation is better un- derstood. A confident bear is arara avis, but the bulls are unmistakably hopeful and hold the reins of power in a manner which is discomfting to the “‘shorts,”’ who move with unusual caution, which contrasts strongly ‘with the recklessness displayed during the first two months of the year, when the disposition to sell almost everything on the list was general, and railways, together with the entire country, were going, accord- ‘ing to the bears, rapidly to the lowest depths of ruin, from which time only could rescue them aftera slow and wearisome course of liquidation. The speculative spirit has changed with circumstances and the result is gradually unfolding itself. Instead of “Down, down, down,” the watchword of Wall street is now “Excelsior,” At the early. session of the open board Erie (sales 1,000) sold at 73, New York Central (sales 300) 923%, Reading (sades 1,600) 103g, Michigan Southern (sales 1,500) 8034, Cleveland and Pittsburg 8074, Rock Island (s. 3) 12034, Cleveland and Toledo 102, Northwestern (3. 3) 2634, pre- ferred 567%, Fort Wayne 97, Spruce Hill Coal 6%, Man- posa preferred 22, ‘At the first regular board the market was firm, and Erie (sales 900) closed 4; higher than at the half-past two board yesterday, Reading 34, Cleveland and Pitts- burg 144, Northwestern preferred 13%, R8ck Island 34, Fort Wayne (sales 4,050) 144, Cleveland and Toledo 34, Mariposa preferred 34, Western Union Telegraph 34. Michigan Southern was 14 lower, Quicksilver 34. Mil- waukee and St, Paul advanced two per cent, selling at 47. Government securities continued strong. Coupon sixes of 1881 advanced %, seven-thirty notes of the first and third series 34, second series %¢. The board passed a resolution discontinuing the one o'clock and hali-past three sessions on Saturday until October next, At the one o’clock open board the market was active and strong. Erie (sales 800) sold at 73% a 4, New York Central 927%, Reading 103% a 7%, Ilinois Central 114, Cleveland and Toledo 102, Michigan Southern (sales 2,500) 823g a 4%, Northwestern 2733 a %, preferred 58 a, Rock Island 1213¢ a 34, Fort Wayne (sales 800) 97%, Cumberland 44% a %, Spruce Hill Coal (sales 2,700) 644 a 2g, Quicksilver 514% a 51. Afterwards the market remained firm, and at five o'clock New York Central was quoted at 92% a 93, Erie 7% a %, Hudson River 109, Reading 104 a 34, Michigan Southern $214 a 4, Cloveland and Pittsburg: 81, Rock Island 12114 a 44, Northwestern 2634 a 34, preferred 68a, Fort Wayne 9734 a %, Canton 52a 34, Quick- silver 51 a 34. ‘The supply of money remains largely in excess of the demand, and the wants of the Stock Exchange are promptly met at 4.05 percent. To-day the majority of transactions among the brokers have been at 4a 434, with exceptions for balances left over at 3 a 334. The dis- count line is sluggishly easy at 6 a7 per cent for first class commercial paper. ‘The gold market has been steady. The opening price was 12674, followed by a decline of 34 anda recovery of 4, the closing quotation being 126%; a 34. The ship- ment of specie by to-day’s steamers was only $49,300, making for the week $117,312. Foreign exchange was inactive and the rates for ster- ling were nominally the same as yesterday. Some of tho leading drawers are apprehensive of war between Prussia and Austria, and therefore refuse to sell at cur- rent quotations, but among the brokers the latter show & somewhat drooping tendency. A few unimportant transactions in bankers’ bills, at sixty days on England, were reported at 10734 a 34, the closing rate being 1073. By an apparently semi-offidial telegram from Wash- ington, through the associated press, we are informed that the aggregate income of the government for the first three-quarters of the present fiscal year—namely, to April 1—was $410,041,232, of which $128,967,375 was for customs duties, and $243,890,548 for internal reve- nue. Atthis rate the total revenue for the full year, ending June 30, will be $500,000,000, against 329,567,126 from the same sources last year. This enormous revenue suggests the advisability of reducing some and abolishing others of the more onerous and vexatious of the host of small taxes with which the country ie burdened and which yield but Kittle to the ‘Treasury after deducting the cost of collection, At the samo time the fact that the country has been so abund- antly able and willing to bear heavy taxation is exceed- ingly gratifying, although its endurance In this particular may not be without limits, Our people are now taxed to ‘an extent unknown to those of any other nation and in an indiscriminate manner which would be productive of little less than revolution in Europe, where the public feels itself less a part of the government than here, Tho best y to pre- serve that law-abiding spirit of contentment which actuates our citizens in meeting the claims of the tax gatherer is to do away as much as possible with petty and us imposts and make equality the touchstone of on under the pew bill which the Committee of Ways and Means will shortly report to the House of Rep- resentatives, etroleum and mining stocks were dull but firm, At the tirst board Oil Creek closed Se. higher than at the same time yesterday, United States 20c., Quartz Hill Consolidated Gregory Gold was 400. lower. At the cond board United States closed 40c. higher than at the first board, selling at $9.90. First National sold at 10c., Oil Creek 90c., Pithole Creek $2 80, Shade River 36c., Gunnell Gold $1, Quartz Hill (s, 30) $5 55. ‘The following table shows the par value of the com. mon stock, the capital paid in, and the length of each of the railroads whose arities are dealt in on th xchange :— Burtalg Chie ago a Chicago and N Chicaso and Mit Pittsburg Colum bus ond Rock Island. 0, Burlington and Quiney..... wd aque ‘and Dubuque and § Fle Ral iroad pret Joliet Little Miam Long Ist Misaiseappt aud ‘ Marictta and Omeinnati..... nd Cineinnati let p . 4 ocred mu waukee and St. Paul pre kee and Prairie du Chien, x . & Pr. da Chien Milwaukee & Pr. da Chien 1,014.00 Morris and Bassex. 000,000 ew York Central... 24,501,000 5,000,000 w York and Norwich and W Now Jersey Tran Ohio and Mixeise! Chapel and Free School of the Immacu- late Conception. Considering the exorbitant prices now demanded for all sorts of building material and labor, the number of buildings in course of erection and the style in which most of them are being constructed aro really astonishing. On all the principal thoroughfares, and on many of the cross streets also, the inereasing wealth of the city and the taste of cituzons are being daily evinced by the erection of some useful and elegant structures. Among the many now being finished is one on East Fourteenth street, near avenue A, which for archi- tectural design and minutoness of detail will bear away the palm from buildings of more pretension and in more aristocratic localities. Tho building has beon erected for the double purpose of a chapel and schoolhouse for the congregation of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The beautiful devotional edifice of the Immaculate Conception was found to be en- tirely too small to accommodate the rapidly increasing Catholic Population of that portion of the city, and the trustees of the church, Mossrs. Kain and Connelly, in connection with the pastor, the Rey. Dr, W. P. Morrogh, determined to erect a chapel on the church property ad- joining the church; but as the parish was sadly in need of a school, it was deemed advisable to erect # buildin; which could be used at once as a chapel and a school house. The Rev. Dr. Morrogh, having had many years’ Shoe in Lorapingg well hecstem yt) tho kina of ice woul most spRrop jate for the ig intended, and, having secured the services of ate O'Neill as architect, and Mr. Michael J. Newman as the building was constructed in a style which reflects credit on all parties concerned in its erection, and will undonbtedly provo to be a blessing, as it is an ornament, to the neighborhood in which it stands. THK BUILDING is forty-seven feet front by one hundred and seven feet deep, and—although from the street it appears to be but four stories high, with a dormer attic—it is five full stories in height. The front is of Ohio and Newark freestone, handsomely finished in the style known as tho modern Norman Gothic, Immediately aver the main entrance is the crest of the Morrogh family, and over the central window of the second ‘acircular tablet, with the monogram of the Immacui eption:: the chiseling im fact, on the eatire The frst enon et: be the chapel of \e first or story, which isto 10 chapel of the Immaculate Ce is one of the neatest and at tho same time one of the most commodious places of the kind in the city, It is finished to correspond with the front of the building, and ts lighted by means of win- dows of richly stained glass, Near the front and at each side of the hall are doors opening on the entrance to tho school, At tho rearond of tho hall, onthe right, is a small sacristy, connected with the ohurch edifice, and on the left sido is a small vestr; enw yd When the Chapel is completed ‘and ready for chapel purposes tt will be well worthy of THE acHooL. a visit, The two stories immediately over the chapel will be reserved for the female department of the school, and the two upper stories for the male department. The on- trance to the school is on either side of the chapel, and by means of strong iron stairs, There are two stairways to each department—one near the rear end of the build- ing, of iron, built into the brick walls, and one at a dis- tance of twenty-nine feet from the front, built between the school and the adjoining building. The latter is to be used only im cases off emergency, and asa means of escape in case of fire; itis of tron trellis work, and is a fine piece of workmanship. The schoolroom stories are all similar in construction; they are divided by means of movable giass partitions ito five rooms each, and are #0 constructed that the partitions may be removed in a few minutes and all the rooms thrown into one, for cone :Tis or exhibitions ‘The ceitings are remarkably high, and the strictest re- gard has been paid to the proper lighting aud ventilating of all the rooms, instances space site= at of pure alr and clear tved for a play ground for pupils, and is divided by portable partitions between the tale and female departments, The vaults and water closets for the pupils are built under the sidewalk, and are in direct communication with the street sewer, so that no off~nsive sme!i from the closets can be discerned throughout the building. The heating will be done by the latest improved heat ing apparatus, and every precaution has been taken to prevent the possibility of the building taking fire, ‘The means of ingress and egress, heating, lighting and venti- Jation are most complete; the materials used are the very best, and the execution, under the direction of the builds been such as to insure strength, solidity and permanonce to the entire structy the purpose to which it is to be devoted it ved it is the best structure in this section of the country. Tho school will be under the direction of the Sisters of Charity and the Christian Brothers; it will be free to the children of the parish, and.will ac ommodate about two thousand pupile. The chapel will hold comfortably one thousand persons, and will be used during the week, as well as on Sandays and holidays ire structure, W finished, will cost about one d and twenty. five dotiars, and the most urts are ne to cancel the obli . For thie pur air are to be held in the new chapel of the Ri Christopher Farrell. The concert will given on th evening of the 30th of April Instant, and all our Catho: le fellow citizens, as well as those who take an interest in good works and the proper cultivation of the mind, should not fail to assist at the concert and fair for the benefit of this really fine and deserving institution, A.=PLEASE CALL AT 16 AND SEE CHARLEY, New ADDRESS A.
