4 - NEW YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 1866.—TRIPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL ‘AND: CORN Frupay, April 90—6 P. M, ‘The stock market has displayed an improving tenden- cy to-day, and the cholera sensation seems to have died out, for the presont at least. Fort Wayne experienced a sharp rise of five per cent, and the trausactions in Erie were very large. Hudson River and Cleveland and Pitts- burg at the same time showed groat firmness, and rail- way shares generally were in the ascendant, as they are likely to continue to be until much higher prices are reached. The miscellaneous shares were neg- lected, and a slight decline was the consequence. All the conditions of the market are favorable to a further advance of prices, and these are of a character which it would be difficult to overcome by merely specu- lative or other subordinate local influences. ‘At the early session of the open board Erie (sales 4,700 shares) sold at 725%, New York Central (sales 600 shares) 92%, Reading (8 8) 103, Michigan Southern 803%, Illinois Central 114, Cleveland and Pittsburg 80, Rock Island 119, Cleveland and Toledo 10134; Fort Wayne 93, Cumberland 44, Spruce Hill Coal 63g, Mari- posa preferred 21% a 20% Atthe first regular board the market developed an improving tendency. Michigan Southern closed % higher than at the balf-past two board yesterday, Rock Island 124, Fort Wayne 3%, Alton and Terre Haute 3, Western ion Telegraph 3%. New York Central was 34 lower, Erie 34, Mariposa preferred 3%, Quicksilver +4. Government securities were strong. Coupon sixes of 1881 advanced 4, coupon five-twentics of the 1862 issue 44, 1865 issue 3, ten-fortios 3%, seven-thirty notes of the first series 44, second series 3. At the one o'clock sessions the market was firmer, and Erio advanced to 73 The attention of stockholders is being directed to an apparent discrepancy in the periodi- cal returns of the earnings of this road. Those for the months of February and March, 1865, were at the time respectively stated by the company to be $836,039 and $1,240,628, and these are now brought forward in the comparative statement of the earnings for the samo mouths im the present year in the following strangely altered shape:—Earnings for February, 1865, $1,011,735; for March, $1,331,124. The speculative director of this road is generally under- stood to be interested in a further decline of Erie, and some are unkind enough to insinuate that the exaggera- tion of last year's earnings is due to a desire on his part to make the present receipts appear smalier by compari- son. In any case the matter calls for explanation from the company. The dechne of yesterday in the stock is mainly attributed to an effort which was made at Albany to pass a bill compelling all the New York railroads to carry the coal transported by the Delaware and Hudson Canal at the lowest rate charged to any other company, and as the Erie Road long ago contracted with the Penusylvania Coal Company to carry its tonnage at a rato which would now be the reverse of profitable, the bill, if it became a law, would press with undue severity upon the Eric Company. We understand, however, that there is no probability of its passage, and that it was introduced into the Legislature more for speculative purposes than other- wise. ‘At the half-past two board Fort Wayne, which had pre- viously experienced a sharp rise, was active (sales 8,000), and closed 8 per cent higher than at the first regular board. Michigan Southern was firm and closed $ higher. New York Central was 3 lower, Erlo 3, Cleveland and Pittsburg 34, Mariposa preferred 3g, Western Union Tole- graph 13. Reading and Rock Island were unaltered. Government securities were steady. At the open board at half-past three o'clock the mar- kot was strong. Erio sul ut 7 4 44 (sales 3,800), Now ‘York Contral (8.8) 9234, Michigan Southern 8134, Cleve- Jand and Pittsburg 8035, Rock Island 120\4 a 34, North- westorn 26%, preferred 573g (sales 1,400), Fort Wayne 97%, Quicksilver 5234. Afterwards the market remained steady, and al half- past flve New York Central was quoted at 9234 a 5, Erie 72% 073, Reading 103% a %, Michigan Southern 8134 a ‘%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 80%{ a 81, Northwestern 26% a %, preferred 66% a 67, Rock Island 120% a , Fort Wayne 9634 a , Canton 62 @ 3, Hudson River 109. The range of the market for State and miscellancous railroad and other securities during the year 1565 was es under:— Tonneasee six per cont. ‘92 60 73 58 86 ‘Missouri six per rcext. 6 7” Louisiana six per cent 60 California seven per c ng 30 Pennsylvania Coal Co. 40 Cumberiand preferred aL pe opi eamship 4 = jew Yor! Money was, in fact, never more a drug than it is at present, and there is no immediate prospect of any material change in the condition of monetary affairs at this centre, This necessarily acts as an incentive to epeculation for a rise on the Stock Exchange and leaves tho course of prices under the control of the bulls, who certainly manifest a0 disposition to neglect favorable opportunity to promote their own enda The discount lire is but poorly supplied with first class com- mercial paper, which at short dale passes at six per cent and at long dato at 64 a 7, while the second grado ts taken with tolerable freedom at 7}g a9. The Western Dankers aro still shipping currency to this city, exchange on which at Chicago and Cincinnati remains firm at par buying and 1-10 premium selling. The gold market opened firm at 126% and advanced to $2755, after which it relapsed 4 and closed steady at 126%. There was an active demand for coin for mine- Giate delivery, aud the general rate for loaus ranged from 3 16 to por cent per diem. Tho steamer Arizona, from Aspinwall, brought $820,860 in treasure. Foreign exchange weakened under a light demand for bills from 107% to 107% for leading bankers’ pills on England at sixty days. Three da’ Wills closed at 108% a X, commercial 1064 a 107; Trancs at sixty days, 6.25, short sight 6.18% a 6.20. The firmness of American securities abroad exerts sn influence upon the market, The advices by the Persia report five-twentios at 73)¢ @ 74 on the London Stock Exchange, the Tth inst, against 724 a \ on ; Erie at 66 against 66, and Lilinois Central a 614 0X against 81 a 3.
