FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Suxpay, April 15, 1866. Bpeculation on the Stock Exchange during the past ‘week bas been almost entirely in favor of a rise, if wo xcept ap interval of disquietuée at 118 commencement, produced by an alarming but incorrect report of the pestilence on board the steamer England, at Halifax. The bears availed themselves of the apprehensions of the approach of cholera to sell the market down; but it yielded stubbornly, and subsequently developed strong recuperative power, and prices were higher at the close, with the exceptions of Erie and Michigm Southern, than atthe opening, An active upward movement in Ohio and Mississippi certificates was begun on Thursday, and the price advanced about two per cent, in anticipa- tion of the road being shortly put up for sale by the trustees to satisfy the trust, when it will be Dought tn by them, and thereupon banded over to the management of the company, the certificates being ut the same time converted into stock. Rock Island and Reading were also strong, and confidence in the value of railway property gave a firm undertone to all the leading ‘stocks, In the miscellaneous list there was at the same time unusual buoyancy and activity. Mariposa pre- ferred was in very brisk demand, and advanced five per cent, the share selling at 24 at the one o'clock board on Saturday. Quicksilver was largely dealt in, and rose about cleven per cent, and Spruce Hill Coal attracted con- aiderable attention at the open board sessions. The “pul element is the controlling one at present, and the probabilities are, in view of the prospect of long-con- tinued monetary ease at this centre, the large earn- ings of railroads, and the important fact that, excepting Michigan Southern, Rock Island and Hudson River, prices are considerably below those current at the end of last year when the earnings were much less, that the up- ‘ward movement has far from culminated. Eric ts twenty- three per cent lower than it was then, and one of the epeculative directors of the company is underorying its credit to the best of his ability because he has a pecu- niary interest in seeing the price submit to a further de- cline. This stock has been the target of the bears for some weeks, and by depressing it they sought to exert a corresponding influence upon the gen- eral mark: ut the result thus far has probably been more loss than profit to themselves. At half-past five on Saturday afternoon the market closed steady at the following quotations:—New York Central 9234 a 54, Erie 73 a 34, Hudson River 108% a 109, Reading 104%, Michigan Southern 793% a 4, Illinois Contral 114 a 3, Cleveland and Pittsburg 7054 a %, Rock Island 119% a 34, Fort Wayne 9134 a 3, Northwestern 26% & X, preferred 65a 3%, Ohio and Mississippi certifl- cates 26%{, Mariposa preferred 2334 a X, Spruce Hill Coal 6%. ‘The moncy market worked with greater ease than dur- ing the previous week, and the general rate forcall loans declined to five per cent, with more important excep. tions at 4 a [434 among the brokers and private bankers than at 6, although the latter was asked by the banks, The supply of funds seeking employment is so far in excess of the demand from the Stock Exchange and for discounts of good commercial paper that iarge amounts have been diverted to the purchase of com- pound interest and seven-thirty notes, quotations for which have advanced accordingly, the former 1} a 2 per cent ard the latter 1, The gold-bearing securities, on tho other hand, were slightly depressed by the de- cline in five-twenties in London and Frankfort, in sympathy with the gencral heaviness« of the funds and foreign securities without exception. Five-twenties declined 3 a 44. In the discount line first class commercial paper has been scarce and 1n request at 6a 73, according to date; but ordinary signatures were abundant and offered through the note brokers at 9a 15 per cent, Not a little “shinning” and “kite-flying”” have been resorted to by needy merchants to enable them to carry the stocks of goods with which they found themselves in many instances overloaded dur- ing the recent prolonged duiness in the merchan- dise markets. Now, however, in their own fig- urative language, they begin to see daylight, anda more confident feeling pervades the commercial mind, while a more active trade has taken the place of the previous semi-stagnation. There is still, however, 8 disposition to limit transctions to current necessities, The dry goods market has been steady, but the volume of business was light, the advance in prices of the pro- coding fortnight having disposed buyers to curtail their orders, The imports of foreign dry goods continue Jargo, the total entered at this port for the week ending on the 12th inst, having been valued in gold at $2,003,467, while the quantity thrown into the market during the same time was valued at $2,610,448, owing to the withdrawals from warehouse boing large, Now that tho Gnancial policy of the government has taken shape and the limits within which the Secretary of the ‘Treasury can act are known, there is no cause for appre- hensions of any material disturbance of values in conse- quence of Treasury movements, The entreaties of the radical contractionists, who would have bankrupted the Treasury and the mercantile community at a single Dlow, have been disregarded, and conservative counsels have prevailed, There is, therefore, nothing in the state of the public finances to interrupt the general pros perity of the country, but much to foster its recuperative strength. The gold market was on the whole steady, but the * daily Quctuations were a little wider than usual during a lull. The advices from Europe with regard to the Aus- ‘tnan-Prussian difficulty and the decline of our securities had a tendency {o strengthen the market, but not to an extent sufficient to produce any material advance. Cash gold was in brisk borrowing demand from the bears, who look forward to the payment of the May coupons for re- ef about a ardently as the children of Israci awaited a fall of manna during their histor.cal torty years in the wilderness. The daily rango of the market was as under:— Highest. Lowest, 125 5 1384 . i ax s 13x Tho export for the week The closing price was 126}. was $122,628. Foreign exchange recovered from its extreme de- pression under the foreign news, and large purchases were made on speculative account, The advance of the wook was equal to 14 3¢ percent, Bankers’ bills on Engiand at sixty days cloved firm at 107} aX, three days 108% a 100, commercial 100% a 10744, france at sixty days 6.28% 5.273. The receipts of cotton at all ports continue large, the quantity for last week being estimated at 43,000 bales, The export movement is active, 20,142 bales having beon shipped from this port during the week ending the 11th inst, The receipts in this market were under 12,000 bales, The following taole shows the quotations of the lead. sng shares at the tirst session of the Stock Exchamgo at tho close of each of the last four weoks:— Stocks. ue mers aL ane April id.
