2 “INANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Tuvrspay, April 12-6 P. M. The stook market has been very firm to-day, with special strength and activity in Hudson River and Cleve- land and Pittsburg among the railway shares, and Quick- silver, Mariposa preferred and Spruce Hill Coal in the miscellaneous list, There is # growing belief that values ‘are higher than prices, and the disposition to buy leading securities at the current quotations is accordingly strong. While, thercfore, the bulls are hopeful, the bears are dis- trustful and move warily, preferring, in the great ma- jority of cases, to remain out of the speculative whirlpool rather than incur the risk ef having their January profits entirely swallowed up. Those who consult the weekly earnings of the railways at the beginning of the year and at the present time will find that they are very much larger now than they were then, while their shares, with the exception of Michigan Southern and Rock Island, are from 4 to 21 per cent lower, as the following Cpescaaiaig of the first board Migs 80) Mlinols Centra 315 9 North western preferred 5% 8 fe ees 90% 18% Looking at the market from this point of view, and taking into consideration the prevailing monetary ease and the passage by both houses of Congress of a finance Dill which gives the Secretary of the Treasury no power worth mentioning over #he currency, it is clear shat prices must undergo ® further appreciation, Conse- quently there wi be for some time to come, in all likelihood, mor® pasturage for tho bulls than choice pickings for the boars, at least in Wall street, ‘At the early session of the open board New York Cen- tral sold at 9254, Erie 74%, Reading 101%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 79%, Rock Island 11934, Northwestern pre- forred (8, 8) 553g, Canton 52, Spruce Hull Coal 6 (b, 3). ‘At the first regular board the market was steady but rather dull, Hudson River was the strongest of the railway shares, closing 13 higher than at the half-past two board yesterday. Northwestern ad- vanced }, Ohio and Mississipp! certificates 34, Missouri sixes 34. Michigan Southern was % lower, Northwestern preferred 34, Rock Island 3, Mariposa preferred 34, Western Union Telegraph 3, Cumberland 3, Quicksilver 2%, Canton 13%, Govern- ment securities were dull and a shade lower, Coupon five-twenties of 1862 declined %, seven-thirty notes of the first series 44; the second and third series were firm. At the one o’clock session of the open board the mar- ket was strong. Ene sold up to 753 (sales 4,300 shares), Spruce Hill Coal was active at 61%. At the half-past two board there was a further improvement, combined with increased activity. Hudson River and Cleveland and Pittsburg were the most buoyant of the railways, and Canton, Quicksilver and Mariposa preferred on the mis- cellancous list, A rumor of now veins being struck at ‘the mines, and a clique movement for a rise in the stock was in circulation respecting the latter company. Hudson River closed 2 per cent higher than at the first regular buard, New York Central 34, Erie 3, Reading $, Michigan Southorn 4, North- western %,° preferred %, Cleveland and Toledo 134, Fort Wayne %, Rock Island 1, Quicksilver 1%, Canton 2%, Mariposa proferced 3. Illinois Central, Cumberland ‘and Ohio and Mississipp! certificates were steady. Gov- ernment gold-bearing stocks were neglected, excepting sixes of 1881, which declined 3. Soven-thirty notes of tho first and second series advanced 34. At the half-past three open board the market was strong for Hudson River and Ohio and Mississippi cer- Aidcates, and steady for the remainder of the list, Hudson River (sales 900) sold at 110}, a, Ohio and Mississippi certificates (sales 10,000) 25% a %, New York Central 92%, Erie (sales 2,500) 7434, Reading 102%, Michigan Southern (b. 8) 80%, Cleveland and Pittsburg (b. 8) 81, Cleveland and Toledo 1115¢, Rock Island 11934, Canton 53%, Spruce Hill Coal 6}. Afverwards the market remained strong, with special activity in Ohio and Mississippi certificates, but only a light volume of business in the general list, At half- past five Now York Contral was quoted at02% a %, Erle 74% a %, Hudson River 110 a 3, Reading 103% a %, Michigan Southern 80% a %, Cleveland and Pitts burg 80% a %, Northwestern 26} a %, preferred 65%, Rock Island 11934 @ X, Fort Wayne 90% a %, Ohio and ‘Mississ ppi certificates 25% @ 26, Canton 5334 a 54, Cum- bderland 453 a 3, Quicksilver 46% a %, Mariposa pre- forred 21 a 21%, Spruce Hill Coal 6% a %. The Stock Exchange continues to be well supplied with money at five per cent. The banks and trust companies, however, gon-rally ask six on misceilanéous securities, but on government collaterals loans are made in excep- tional instances at four percont. The tendency of the Proposed reduction of the rate of interest on the tempo- rary deposits held by the Sub-Treasury on the 1st proxi- mo to five per cent, and on Clearing House certificates to four, will be to cheapon money in the open market. The discount live 1s easy, and first class commercial paper passes at 63 a 7 per cent, and the second grade at 8. The banks aro employing their surplus funds in compound interest notes, which bave advanced % a1 per cent. The latter were quoted to-day, according to date, as fullows:— June, 1864, 110 11044; July, 100% a 100%; August, 109 a 100'{ ; October, 108 a 10814 ; December, 107 a 107%; May, 1865, 1045; a 10494; August, 103 a 103%; Septem- ber, 102!4 a 102%; October, 102 a 102%. The gold market opened at 127% and declined to 127%, after which it recovered 3, and then gradually sank to 127% 41274, the closing quotation. There is not much speculative activity in the room, but the disposition to operate for a rise rather than a fail is becoming general, notwithstanding that about twenty millions of interest on the Qve-twenty loan will fall due on the Ist of May, Much of this will, however, have to be remitted to the foreign bondholders, and meanwhile it is very uncertain to what extent the Ausirian Prussian difficulty may de- press five-twenties in the Frankfort and London markets and induce their return to this country. Coin was loaned at from 6 per cent to 1-32 per day in favor of the lender. Foreign exchange was very strong daring the morn- ing, and the leading drawers declined selling under 107%, And ono house refused to name a rate, but late in the afvornoon rates were a shade casver, and at the close of business bankers’ bille on England at sixty days were quoted at 10734 a 3s, threo days 108% a 4, commercial 10634 0 107, bilis on Paris at sixty days 5f. 26c. a Sf. 300., Ghort sight 5f. 200. Petroleum and mining stocks were dull and rather heavy in the morning, but in the afternoon they were strong and more jactive. At the first board Bennehot! Run closed 36c. lower than at the same time yesterday. Excelsior was 20c, higher, Pithole Farms 20c., Benton 15c., Smith & Parmelee 20c,, Texas 9c. At the second board Pithole Creek closed 60, higher, selling at $2 90; Consolidated Grogory Gold $2 20, selling at $17 50; Smith & Parmelee $1, selling at $9 26. Contral sold at $2, Empire City S4c,, Ham McClintock $175, United States (s. 30) $9, Benton $1 75, Downleville Gold 400., Gunnell Gold $1 10, Liverty ic, Quartz Hill $4 10, ‘We trust that Congress will lose no time in ba Ag a resolution of inquiry which wili render it inou upon the Secrotary of the Treasury to give a public planation of the changes which were made in the frie of the public debt during the month of March, The statement dated April 1 shows that subs-quent to March 1 the Troasury bought $1,650,000 of ton-forty bonds, $1,090,000 of soven-thirty notes and $2,000,000 of com. pound interest notes, It also shows that during the Game time it sold $2,596,600 of fve-twonty bonds and $1,023,650 of the sixes of 1881, The transaction was a Private one, There was no obvious necessity for these secret movements, which are, of course, calculated to undermine confidence tn the public ad- ministration of the fuances, People naturally argue Chat as the Secretary has acted thus in March he may shuttle the cards anew in April, and that the national Govt will be kopt in a state of perpotual transformation for rontons best known at Washington, but not yet com- prec by the pubdite, Tho business at the Sub-Treasury to- day was as fol- fows:— Total rece!pts. ments, lance.
