2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Suxpay, April 8, 1806, The stock market was active but feverish till near the end of last week, when it became more settled, and closed with a strong upward tendency, The disturbing and exciting features of the railway speculation were the repid rise in Michigan Southern and the forced depres- sion of Erie. Tho former, under a scarcity of stock for delivery, sold at 104 cash on Thursday morning at the epen board, while it was offered at 84 upon a seller's option of three days. Erie was at the same time being vigilantly hammered by, a8 is supposed, one of {ts loading directors, who was known to be “short” of stocks, incinding Old Southern, the course of which aroused his tre te such a degree that he the scales throu: the Superior Court for an injunction, and he got it; but, alas for the vanity of human hopes! it was not heeded, and the Rorrifled Ursa Major of Broad street had the Old Southern, of which he was “short,” bought im for his account under the rule of the Stock Exchange. Bent upon pumshing his enemies with the Luimoat rigor of the law, however, he has mado a sup- plomental complaint, in which he chargos his own brokers and the President of the Board with being parties to inflict upon bim “great damage,” and the law will sit in judgment and kear the arguments for and against his application on Mon- day. Meanwhile, to add to his discomfture, Ene, escaping control, has bounded upward like a kit, and after selling down to 71% mt one timo during tho week closed on Saturday at 79% a 80. The most popular air in Wall street just now is that sug- by “Pity the Sorrows of a Poor Old There was a strong demand for Cleve- burg as the week advanced, and at half- on eaturday evoning it was very active at 8154 Erie was at the same timo quoted at 797 a 80, » S144 a 82, Hudson River 106% a 107, bid, preferred 65% a 56, Rock 44a 4, Fort Wayne 913g a %, Now York Ss curities were dull, and the six per cent gold-bearing stocks declined 34 a 34 per cent, and ten- forties %{; seven-tlurty notes {a 3%, This was in part owing to tho slightafecline in American securities on the Lon wk Exehange reported by the last two steam- mpathy with the general sense of anxiety which was felt in relation to the Austrian-Prussian question. The friluro, under diseroditable circumstances, of the London Joint Stock Discount Company, and the panic in the stocks of Gnauco companies at the same time, con- tributed to the depression of prices generaily on the al six percent, with a few exceptions on Satur- e, aud all the indications are favorable to unin- The discount market has beon guiet, and first class commercial paper has boen freoly taken at 78 percent. Tho failure of Culver, Poun & Co,, In this city, and more recently that of Ward & Brother, of Rochester, together with the ran upon tho banks there and another considerable failure in Bos- ton, bave caused lenders to scrutinize names closoly and to show @ proverouce for placing their money at call to employing it im discounts, Increased activity end @ more confident tone have characterized all our markets, however, during the last fort- night, and the signs aro generally that tho sem!- Stagnation and gloom which marked February andthe greater part of March will be compensated for by m- creased animation in the future, There is still a certain degree of feverish anxiety and uncertainty manifested with rogard to the course of prices, but this is hopeful day at fi terrupted monetary ease. in comparison with Ue previous depression. The dry* goods trade was active at improving prices during the first half of the wook, but afterwards tho demand slack- ened. The dow of currency from the West still con- tinues to a very moderate extent, but after the opening of navigation the tide will probably turn from East to West. The fact, however, of the latter section being considerably indebted to the former will {have the effect of so adjusting the exchanges that for some months to come the drain will be merely nominal, and, therefore, exert no influence upon the money market hero, The gold premium raled steady during the week, the business of the speculators being chiefly confined to bor- rowing aud leuding coin for delivery. Loans were made at 1.82 4 3-16 per diem in favor of the lender, showing the large extent of the “shoft” interest outstanding.» The boars, however, prefer to borrow than to buy, hoping that the payment of tho five-twenty coupons duc on May 1 will afford them relief, This interest Aggregates about twenty millions, but much of it has to be remitted to the bondholders in Europe. The closing price was 127, aud the range of the market from day to day is thus shown:— Monday. T when it weakeued under a large supply, and on Saturday they were sold socond hand at 106, although 106% was asked b of the loading drawers, Cotton deciined pound during the week. ‘Th® recotpts at are estimated at 40,000 bales, The receipts f ending with Friday were the week ending on the 4th nst., 10 At Liverpool the market has been rater I r large receipts from the United SMe: out indies, Tho changes in the last statement of the public debt, to wl c-calied ntteation a fow days ago, still await explanation from Mr, MeCulloch. The people have a right to kuow why and on what terms the Treasury $1,550,000 of ten-forty bonds, $2,000,000 of thirty joan before maturity; also, why and on what. torms it gold $2,500,600 of five-twenty bonds and $1,022,550 of the sixes of 1881. It is evident chat there 0 of ten forties, seven-thirties and com- six pr cent bonds, and the transaction What the Troatmry had to gain by it not discover, the more particularly as con- cerns the ten-orties, the longest stock in mar- kot, which “certainly mecds no conversion, The compound interest notes, which, by the way, were first suggested by Mr, J. H. Wainwright, of th's city, ta a to Mr. Chase, dated January 1, 1862, call for no 6 if advance of their maturity, as thoy act as inflating auxiliaries in the hands of bankers, who are iudaced to hold a larger logal tender reserve to one.
