OUB FORTRESS MONROE CORRESPONDENCE. Formsss Moynog, April 5, 1866. Tho government trapsport steamor Eliza Hancox, Cap- tain Shuter, arrived here this morning from Galveston, Texas, She left Galveston on the 22d ult,, and on the route, moeting with some rough but mainly favorable weather, stopped at Key West, Charleston and Moreicad City. From here she expects to go to New York to be discharged from the government employ, though there is some talk of her being detained as quarantine steamer. Sho brings several discharged prisoners from the Dry Tortugas. By conversing with these prisoners I have obtained full partioulars touching tho preset con- dition, health and varied employments of tho assussina- tion conspirators against President Lincoln, now under-- go ng imprisonment there. DR. MUDD. ; Dr. Mudd, stneo his attempt to escapo by consenting himself in th bunker of a steamer, has not been able to revive the confidence reposed in him previous to that time. He is still kept under closo guard, aud com- pelled to clean out tho bastions in the casemates of the fori, gud do somo of the most menial and dograding work Fequiréd to be done. Instead of becoming recon- ciled to his lot, he grows more discontented and quera- lous. Never very robust, he iz now but little more than askeleton, aud his growing emaciation shows how bit terly his spirit cbafes under bis imprisonment, and how Greply the tron. pierces bis soul, His’ constant prayer is for deatti, which alone can get him free. It is natural he should ‘suffer more than hia collearues in crime. ‘The most- intelligent of them all, and in the qesociations and habits of bis former life greatly Nfted ‘above thom, he is $0 much the more the keenest sufforer now. | Bat there ls none ‘to pity him, All keep aloof irom him, ARKOLD. Arnold {s employed as clerk of Captain Van Reade, Post Adjutant. An uncommonly fine penmau and ac- cupate accountant—his profession will be remembered as that of bookkeeper—and well bebaved and gmodest and yielding in bis demeanor, he grows in usefulness and popularity each day. A guard attends him to his meals, which are the same as the other prisoners’, and a: night he is kept in close custody. His behavior shows that he appreciates his position and that he does not, like Dr. Mudd, intend to abuso the coniidence placed in him wud loge it,’ His health is good. COLONEL MARMADUK, In striking contrast to the persons I have referred to is Colonel Marmaduke, found Sip of the noted cou- spiracy to freo tho prisoners at Dougias and burn Chicago, He has charge of the réen, In respect to manual labor, no royal gardener has aa casier time. Liko the lilics of the flold, he toils mot. Hic only bust. ness is to seo that those under him work. He has tho privilege of gong outside the fort at any time between revoulle and Sunset. He does not evidently allow, his prison life to interfere seriously with bis health or spir.ts, for both are excellent. In the extent of freedom allowed Lim, he is very much given to putting on the airs of a fue gentleman, and walks and struts about like one he the very best terms with himself and the world, NUMBER, OF PRISONERS, When tho Eliza Hancox. tet’ Key West there were at Fort Jeifervon, or the Dry Tortugas, sixty-five white and nincty-five colored prisoners.
