2 NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 1866.—WITH UST LENaet. ——— FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Ter soa, “April 56-6 P. M. ‘The stock market has been active but feverish to-day, ‘attended with unusual excitement in Michigan Southern, the “shorts” in which haye been compelled to “corner”? tleir contracts at an enormous loss, owing to the scarcity of cash stock and peremptory demands for its delivery. So much has this unexpected movement absorbed the attention of the street that the general course of business. has been disturbed, and frequent spasmodic fluctuations of prices indicate the Stful state of the speculattve feel- ing. At the same time the temper of the market is “pollish”’ and heavy purchases for a riso are being made, Cleveland and Pittsburg taking the lead just now in ao tivity after the sensational stock of the hour, At the early session of the open board Michigan South- ern (sales 3,200 shares) sold at 104 cash, and 64 seller three days—a difference of twenty percent; Erie (sales 8,500) 73% & 4g, Roading (sales 1,800) 10034, Cleveland and Pitisburg 79 a 78%, Rock Island 1103, Hudson River (b.3) 1094g. At the first regular board Michigan Southern continued the leading feature of the market (sales 4,450 shares) and sold at 97 a 101 cash, and 83 seller five days. Erie closed 3¢ higher, Reading %, Fort Wayne 34, Weat- ern Union Telegraph 84. Cleveland and Pittsburg was 1 lower, Rock Island 3, Missouri State sixes #{. Ohio and Mississippi certificates were active at 243; 025%. Gov- ernment securities were steady, with largo transactions in seven-thirty notes, Coupon sixes of 1881 declined 34, Soven-thirties of the second series 34. At the one o’clock session of the open board Michigan Southern (sales 2800 sharos) sold at 833g seller three days, and 96cash. There was a large business done in Cloveland and Pittsburg (sales 12,500) at 785 0 7734. At tho rogulur board Michigan Southern (sales 2,500) sold at 95 « 96 casb, and 83 seller three days. At the half-past two board Michigan Southern was very much excited, An injunction was served upon the President of the Board, issued by Judgo McCunn on the application of Mr. Dauiel Drew, restraining Messrs. Scott, Capron & Oo, from buying in under the rule 2,800 shares of the stock on account of Messrs, Groesbeck & Co., brokers. Tho injunction, however, was not obeyed, and the latter firm ordered the stock to be bought in, which was accordingly done, and this settled tho matter, ‘The stock sold at 9824 a 95 cash, and a of three days, the salea aggregating 4, ares, The regular price closed 2 per cent than at the first regular board, Erie %, New York Cen- tral %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 134, Rock Island 4, Northwestern preferred 14, Western Union Telegraph 3%. Government securities werosteady. Coupon sixes of 1881 were 3 higher, At the open board at half-past three the general mar- kot was firm, but Michigan Southern declined from 88 lar, Erie soldat 7344 a %, Reading 10034, land and Pittsburg 793, a %, Rock Island 110%, Northwestern preferred 54% a 4, Fort Wayno 894, New York Central (b. 8) 91%. Firat class commercial paper passes at 7 a8 por cent, with a somewhat brisker inquiry for discounts, The second best quality is rated at8a9. The drain of cur- reacy from the West, alihough very moderate, still con- tinues. Tho gold market has been steady, and loans were made at 1-32 a ‘4 percent per diem in favor of the lender. Tho opening quotation was 127%, followed by a decline to 1275 and @ recovery at four P, M. to 1277 a 128, Foreign exchange was dull. Bankers’ bills on England at sixty days were quoted at 10634, three days 107), commercial 105 a 106, Petrolcum and mining stocks are rather irregulor, and sevoral failures among the brokers have occurred during the last fow days, owing to the fluctuations resulting from tho failure of Culver, Penn &@o. and the banks dependent upon them, with which many of the oil com- panies kept accounts, We are requested to say that the First National Bank of Corry, Pa, has notsuffered by ‘the failure tn question—a statomont the truth of which i# vouched for by tho Ninth National Bank of this city.
