2 “FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tonspar, April 3—6 P. M. ‘The stock market has been active and strong to day, with a further material advance in Michigan Southern, Rock Island and Cleveland and Pittsburg, and, but to @ Jeas extent, in the other leading railway shares, Erie continued to be vigilantly hammered by the bears and failed to experience any improvement, It re- mained steady, however, till near the close of business, when it declined 1 @ 1% per cent, partly im sympathy with the general market, ‘At the early session of the open board Erie (sales 8,100 shares) sold at 7434, New York Contral (s. 8) 9134, Michi- gnn Southern (sales 2,500) 8734 a %, Cleveland and Pitts- burg 79% a 80, Rock Island 11634, Northwestern (sales 1,100) 264; a %, preferred 55, Fort Wayne 8934. At the first regular board the market was strong, with espe- cial buoyancy im Michigan Southern (sales 3,400 shares) and Rock Island (sales 1,800). Tho former closed 23 higher than at the half-past two Weard yesterday, and the latter 2\. Cleveland and Pittsburg (sales 3,100) and Fort Wayno (sales 1,200) were ‘also very firm and in the ascendant, the one closing at an advance of 144 and the other of 1%. New York Central was % higher, Reading $, Northwestern }, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 3¢. Erie was an excep- tion to the rule, and showed a decline of 34. Govern- mei securities were dull. Coupon five-twenties of the 1862 issue, were 34 lower. The second issue advanced 4, Soven-thirty notes of the second series 3g. ‘At tho one o'clock session of the open board Michi- gan Southern was active and sold at 883% a 3% (Stag 2,000), New York Central sold at 91%, Read- ing 1M, Rock Island 116 a 34, Cleveland and Pitts- burg 79s, Northwestern preferred 543g, Fort Wayne 90\{. There was no afternoon session of tho regular board, in orde: to allow the members to attend the funeral of wheir late associate, Mr, Ward, uor any later session uf the open board A _ large amount of business was nevertheless transacted tn the lower hall of the Stok Exchange. Michigan South- ern rose to 8934, but afterwwds receded a fraction, and ‘at half-past five the market clesed steady at the follow- ing quotations:—Michigan Southern 8934 a 3, Cleveland and Pittsburg 7834 a 9, Northwestern 20% aM, pre ferred 6434 a %, Rock Island 115% @ 34, Fort Wayne 89% a %, Erie 733% a %, New York Central 913; @ 3, Mudson River 109% a %, Reading 987; a 99. Michigan Southern continued to absorb attention, and its stubborn strength surprises ‘and perplexes the street; 8914 was bid at the close for any part of 5,000 shares, The bears are apprehensive, yet at the same time doubtful, of a‘corner” in the stock, the “‘short’’ interest in which is supposed to be large. Tho United States Supreme Court has decided that the Chamberlin lease and judgment for $1,200,000 against the Fastern Division of the La Crosse and Wiiwaukee Railroad Company is valid and next in order of hen after the first and second mortgage bonds, taking precedence of J. Edgar Thompson’s and Thomas Scott's advance of nearly $600,000 to pay past due interest, ‘This lease judgment, as well as all other claims that are ‘of any value against the property, are owned by the Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad Company. ‘The gold market has been moderately firm. The open- Ing price was 127%, followed by a decline to 12734 aud a subsequent advance to 128.a 3%, the closing quotation. Coin for delivery was in demand at 6 per cont a 1-16 in favor of the lender. Foreign exchange was dull, Bankers’ bills at sixty days on England were quoted at 1064 a %, three days’ 10744 a %{, commercial 105 a 106%. Bills on Paris were ated at Sf. 0c. a 5f. 35c, for long date and 5f. 250. a Sf. 21340. for short date. That the large exports of cotton going forward aro excerting a vory depressing influence upon the sales 1s apparent; and how far or how long this depression may characterize the market in the future is a matter upon which opinions widely diffor, The money market is easy at five por cont to the Stock Exchange, and the exceptions at six are rare. The dis- count line is quiet, and first class commercial paper passes at seven per cent. The statement of the public debt for the month ending on the 1st inst, shows that the Secretary of the Treasury has beon making conversions of securities in a mauner ‘anauthorized by any act of Congress. The ten-forty bonds have decreased more than a iillion and a hall. Into what have these been con and at whose solicitation? There is an imcrease of sixes of 15: from $282,603,100 to $283,715,650, ‘ana of the five- twenties from $676,043,500 to $679,956,000, These changes call for an explanation. The total debt shows a decrease of $75,063, and tho legal tender notes of $2,636,121, $2,000,000 of which is on the item of com- pound notes. The coin in the Treasury has decreased $6,933,508.
