2 — FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tuxspay, Fob. 20-6 P.M. The stock market has beon unsettled to-day. At the early seasion of the open board Michigan Southern and Erie wore the most active of the railyray shares. The former gold at 70'{ and the latter at 81, New York Con tral 92, Clovelaud and Pittsburg 80%, Cleveland and Toledo 108, Northwestern 28%, Fort Wayne 933%, At the first regular board the market was active but lower, New York Central closed at a decline of X from yester- day’s second board price, Erie 34, Reading 34, Michigan Southern %, Northwestern 34, preferred 34, Rock Island 3. Atlantic Mail was 6%¢ higher. Government secu- ritios were steady. At (he one o'clock sessions the market was firmer and Michigan Southern was active at 70%. At the half-past two board it was rather heavy, and Reading closed 3 lower than at the Sret regular board, Michigan Southern 44, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Northwestern }y, pre- ferred 34, Rock Island , Fort Wayne 3, New York Central was 34 higher, Erie 3, Atlantic Mail 1%. Gov- ernmont securities were also heavy. Coupon five-twon- ties of the old issue were 34 lower, second issue %, ten- forties 4. Seven-thirty notes of the third sericea ad- vanced i. At the open board at half-past three prices experienced a further decline, and the bears hammered the market vigorously. New York Central closed on the call at 913, Erie 8034, Hudson River 10234, Reading 100, Michigan Southern 6934, Cleveland and Pittsburg 78, North- western 2734, Fort Wayne 92%, Quicksilver 41%. Afterwards the market remained steady, and at half past five o'clock New York Contral was quoted at 9134, Roading 100 %, Michigan Southern 6934 a , Cleve- land and Pittsburg 78 4 34, Rock Island 103 a 34, North- western 27%, preferred 645 a 34, Fort Wayne 927% a 93, Comberland 4414 a 34. There bas been a brisk inquiry for money to-day at six percent, and tWe sales of gold by the government havo caused a further absorption of legal tenders by the Sub-Treasury, The increased requirements of tho Stock Exchange created a slight pressure in some quarters late in the afternoon, but on the whole the supply of capital was in excess of the demand. The discount line is dull, and first class commercial paper passes at seven per cent. The apprehension that Con- gresa, upon the recommendation of Mr. Hooper, may pass an act declaring that compound interest bearing legal tenders shall not form any part of tho reserve of national banks against their deposits, is causing the lattor to observe increased caution in making discounts, Tho pendency of the new Finance bill also inspires a cer- tain sense of insecurity, however much it may bo un- warranted by the real facts of the ‘nancial situation. The gold market opened under depression at 136%, Dut afterwards advanced to 137%, and closed at 1374 54 Loans were made at 4 a 6 per cent in favor of the borrower of the coin. Foreign exchange opened firm, and bankers’ bills on England at sixty days sold as high as 108%; but tho market soon became flat, and 10334 a 10334 was tho closing quotation. Commercial bills were rated at 107% a 10844. The official return of the exports from this port for the yeur 1865 shows that they were considerably below the value of those for 1864, being only $203,630,282 against $272,648,162 ; but full allowanco must be made in considering these figures for the appre- elation of the currency and the consequent decline of prices. Tho imports were heavy, being valued at $224,742,419 in gold in 1865, against $218,125,760 in 1864. Petroleum and mining stocks were firm. At tho first board Bliven closed 260. higher than at the socond board yesterday, selling at $3 65; United States 40c., selling at $16 50; Bates & Baxter, $2 25; Smith & Parmlee 60c., solling at $14 60. At the second board Oil Creek closed 20¢, higher than at the first board, selling at $5; Bates & Baxter 75c., solling at $3; Smith & Parm- lee 80c., selling at $13 80. Bennehoff Run sold at $15 30, Bradley 43c., Bliven $3 65, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore 60c., Oceanic 40c., Palmer Petroloum $4 20, Pithole Creek $9 70, United States $16 70, Webster 90c., Shade River $2 60, Gunnell Gold $1 35, Wallkill §1 20, Benton $2 05, Montana 75c., Corydon $1 30, The bank committee appointed to proceed to Wash- ington to confer with the Secretary of tho Treasury upon the proper interpretation of the law taxing deposits aro to leave town to-morrow. In addition to Messrs, Coo, Haight and Vormitye, Mr. R. H. Lowry, of the Bank of the Republic, and Mr, J. F. D. Lanier, of the Third Na- tional Bank, have been selected for the mission.
