2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERO! ———eeeee ule Bas ehe Spéouiatiun on the Stook Exchange was languid this morning, and at the early session of the open board there was no material improvement from the depression of Saturday evening, Erie wold. a6 TY, Now York Central 8734, Hudson River 00}{, Reading 98%, Michigan Southern 6844, Cleveland and Pittsburg 82, Fort Wayne 92x. At the first regular board’ the market, although dull, was firmer at the opening, but on the second call ‘the advance was lost, Erie closed 3 lower than at tho half-past two boatd'om Saturday, Reading $i, Michigan Southern $; Cleveland and Pittebarg %, Rock Island 3. Northwestern was % higher, preferred 4. New York ‘Pentral and Quicksilver were steady. Government s0- ourities were unchanged. \ Abthe open board at one o'clock the market was hoavy ‘tnd prices declined 3 a 3. At the half-past two board it was steady with a fractional improvement, Now York Central closod % lower than at the first regular board, Erie %, Hudson River 3, Reading {, Mishican South- ‘ern %, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Northwestern 3, preferred 34, Quicksilver 34. Rook island was 34 higher. Government securities were firm. Coupon five-twenties advanced 34, Soven-thirty notes were unchanged. ‘At the balf-past three open board the market was firm, ee and prices wore a shade better. New York Central sold | 1000 at 873¢, Erlo 765, Budson 9954, Roading 9834, Michigan Southern 67%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 81%, North- western 274; Afterwards the speculative focling was stronger and prices continued to advance, At halt- past five o’clock Erie was quoted at 77 a 34, Michigan Southern 67% a 68, Cleveland and Pittsburg 8176 a 3, Northwestern preferred 54a $f, Rock Island 9934 a 3, Fort Wayne 92% a 4, Hudson River 9934 a 100, ‘The gold markot was steady, and the’ supply of coin for del:very continues scarce, loans being made at about 3¢ por cent perday. An impression prevails that when the floating supply becomes larger, in consequence of sales by the Sub-Treasury, the price will, de- cline. The expectation that the government will shortly appear in tho market as a sellor pre- vents a rse which would otherwise take place and induces the “‘shorts’’ to continue borrowing at the present high rates, In view of this half a million was offered at about one o'clock, seller three days, at 139, The opening q otation was 1393{, followed by an ad- vance to 149 and a quick decline to 1803¢. The closing price was 139%. Foreign exchange continued flat, and leading drawers. asked 103 for their sixty days bills on Eng- land, while inferior bankers’ bills were gold at 107%. The supply of Southern cotton bills is the chief source of tho present depression. The cotton which these bills represent belug shipped mainly from Southern ports does not show in our local export returns, and hardly suilicient allowance 1s made’ for this in the general estimates which are formed of the course of our foreign exchanges, ‘That the export of the staple will, however, continue much longet on the present scale 1s excecdingly improbable, aud meanwhile the itm- ports at this port are about two-thirds larger in currency value than the exports, We have here a strong coun- torpoise to the cotton exports from Southern ports, and the rates of foreign oxchange during the ycar will be more influenced by tho extent of our imports than of our exports, for if the former continue as Jargeas at Present thoy must preponderate considerablyin value, preparatory to new cotton crops, over the exports. The money market contiuues casy under a light de- mand at5a6 por cent forcall loans. Tho bank state- mont for the week indicates the steady drain of currency into the Sub-Treasury on temporary deposit which has been going forward. The deposits show-a de- ‘crease of only a little more than four milhons, which is considerably less than the amount withdrawn fromthe banks for depovit in the Sub-Treasury. The loans at the game time show an increase of $2,702,548, which is mainly attribuiablo to investments in seven-thirty notes and other government securiti:s, for the ake of omploy- ing idie balances. The legal tender notes have de- creased more than a million ond @ half, owing to the beforo mentioned Sub-Treasury” deposits, ‘out for which thore would have been an increase of a decronse of bank deposits md legal tendor:; increase in loans, Tho banks count thelr own Sub-Trea- Bury deposits as loans, and their customers’ deposits in the Sub-Treasury are roflected ta the decrease of the bank deposits. ‘Tbe specic has decreased $2,169,285, whioh is traceable to withdrawals for the paymont of customs dutics, Tho increase of moro than half a inil- lion in the circulation is mainly attributable to new issues of national bank notes, Tho discount lin is rathor dull owing to au apparont Indisposition to accept any but first clas names, which are taken at 7 per cent, with exceptions at 73; a 84¢ for long date. e bugbear of the new Finance bill still unscttles the market; but this must soon wear away. Tho interest on threo bundrod millions of seven-thirty notes, acereating $10,950,000, falls due on the 16th Anst., and the £ub-Treasurer advertises that the holders of thirty or moro coupons may seud thom in at once for examination. @ Tho following tabie shows tho argregates of the last weokly statement of the Now York Associaied Raaks compared with the returns of the previous yee — ». 3. gai? 510,382 474 The doviat‘ons from the returns of the previous wook aro as follows :— Increase In Ic Decroase in + Tnoreas? in ctrou' Decrease in deposits Decreaso iu iogal toric. od The transactions at the Cies Louse in this wook compare as follows with the busines of the pre- vious week :— Clearings for the week ending Jan, 27 Clear ngs for the week ending Feb. 3. Yet it was a species of crime produced by drunkenness that led to assaults and batteries. But serious crimes in the county and city of New York were not on the increase. Though it might seem strange to them, if.they. were guided by what the papers said about tho administration of th crimimal, law in the State of New York, the iviurns of the tra's in the Court of Sessions and in the Court of Oyer and Terminer would show that guilty men were oouvirted—that thoy scldom escaped. They should re- mewhber that if crim.s increased the eikaceltes had in- creased.
