2 . ~ 4 NEW YUKK HERALD, FRIDAY, DEUHMBER 22, 1865. ‘FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tavrspar, Deo. 21-6 P. M. The stock market was irregular and somewhat excited to-day. Erie continued scarce and strong, the difference Detwoen the cash and regular price ranging from 3 to 4%. The course of this stock in particular has puzzled $he street, and the indications are that the present twist will continue go long as the bills find {t profitable to buy in the regular way and sell for cash, as they are now doing. Cleveland and Pittsburg was hammered by the late bull party for the sake of producing an effect for « eortain purpose, which, it is understood, was accom- plished. There was a general harmonizing of interests bearing upon the future management of the road at a meeting held to-day, and a full and satisfactory under. standing arrived at with respect to the disposal of proxies at the annual election of officers on the 84 of January. While this was in session special efforts were mado to depress the stock; but the motive for so doing no longer exists, and it Is calculated that the conference referred to will, in its results, contribute largely to the value of the stock intrinsically. ‘Ai the early eession of the open board Erie sold at 94% & 95, New York Central 953, %, Michigan Southern Cleveland and Pittsburg 87}, Obio and Mississippi cortificates 283¢ (a. 3), Schuytkill Coal 1334. At the frst regular board Erie, Michigan Southern’ and Ohio’ and Mississippi certificates were the strongest stocks on the j but the goneral- market was dull and hammered by boars. Krie closed 33 higher than at the half-past two board yesterday, but the’ rest of the lst showod a.de- ‘cline, namely—New York Comaral i, Miotrizan Southera ‘3%, Oblo and 8 Certificates 3, Pittsburg 2%, Northwestern $6; preferred-%{, Quioksilver 5: meat securities were inactive, but steudy. At the open ‘béard ‘at one o'clock Krio rose 10 06% cash ead 05% regular, aud Muriposa was active at 26, but -Pintsborg-sold down to $475, with a farther ‘hamarer: ing after the board togs;. At the rogular wossion at balf-past two there was sconsiderable — excite- ment end vory earnest bidding and * offoring, Wo mettle of the bulls being shown in the demand for Cleveland and Pittsburg and other active stocks, and that of the bears in distributed sales at sixty days! option. The market was roused from the compara- tive lethargy which had overtaken it, and the contest. be- tween the opposing interests assimed @ more lively aspect. Should the bulls determine to use their strength instead of allow ng it to remain unfelt thero is nothing to prevent their doing protty much as they please with prices in the present easy condition of the money market, and the large outstanding “short” interest which has latterly been created affords a splendid basis for operations, the onty drawback being the approaching holidays, and this 18 of only temporary and trifling importance. The report of the departure of Mr. McCulloch from Washington in this direction was a signal for some of the bears to put out a fresh 1 ne of “sorts,” but upon what financial theory it is diM@-ult to deine, Certainly the Secretary of the Treasury will neiMer propose nor carry into effect any new measuro tur after Congress meets following the adjournmey, and whenever he docs do either it will %_ in a manner which will exert an influence opfmaite to that which is goner- ally expected. Ho will priwably in the course of a month or two offer to fund compound and other inter st bearing notes into a five per cent fifty year stock at par, and he will at the same timo pay off by all tho moans at his command a certain portion of the tempo- rary deposits, prec-ding the same by notice of a stoppage of interest on tho same after a fixed date, This will add considerably to the supply of active currency in the Country and stimulate speculation on the Stock Exchange, the intention being to make money ousy ond at the same time promote conversions of seven-thir:y and compound interest notes into bonds to leasen the bur- dons of the Treasury in mecting maturing obligations at short. dates in the’future, But even th’s yrovoss will mot'be forced, for there will be no tinit asto time or @mount. It will bo entirely voluntecr funding, and the probability is that it will go forward very slowly, ex- tending over a Jong period, and by no means counteract the effect ofthe new natioual bank issues. . Atthe half-past three call of the regular board Erie was % higher than at tho first board, Ohio and Miss sipp! cortifiontes 4. New York Central was %{ lowor, Michigan Southern ¥, Pittsborg 14, Northwestorn %, Fort Wayne 3. Government securities were firm, and Coupon five-twenties of tho third issue advanced 3. At the last seasion of the open board the gonoral market was Crmor. Erie sold at 96%, New York Con- tral 953g, Reading 106, Mich’gan Southorn 75, Rock Island 107, Pittsburg 84 a 1, Northwestern 353, pro- forred 61%, Fort Wayne 105%, Hudson 103‘, Schuyl- Kill Coal 14, Cumbofland 433. Afterwarda, on the street, the markot gained {a strongth Bnd asctuvity, and at half-past ovo P. M. Michigan Bouthern was selling at 753, Cleveland and Pittsburg 855, and Eric 96, with a gowd deal of excitemont m the ‘bidding for each of these stocks. Large ‘“short'’ sales hhave beon made under the'bellof that Erie would havo yielded bofore this, but thore are no signs favorable to the realization of the expectations formed by those ‘operating for a fall. Gold wasachade firmsr. After opening at 146% i¢ dropped to 1457, and then rose to 14654 a %, ultimate'y closing at 14659. Cash became scarce, and loans wore made in the afternoon as high a8 1-16 in favor of tho lender. Foreign exchange was dull, and bankers’ bills on Eng- Iand at sixty days wore quoted at 1093;, but importers ‘were indisposed to pay more than 100 \. Money was abundant at seven por cent, with frequent exceptions at six, the demand being light in proportion to the supply.
