GENERAL ITEMS AND SPECULATIONS. ite. &. &e. Severn! matters were occupying the attention of the ‘Tonian men (and women) yesterday in this vicinity. In the first place, the developments regarding tho Paris ratt, proceeding from the Senatorial party and pub- shed ‘in yesterday’s Heraup, had to be canvassod and digested; then the “A. P. A. Orange gusfitter’s fat job 4n the Mauision” became a candidate for attention, and ‘was accordingly the recipient of a fuil quota. The sig- m'ficant report which we gave from Washington, too, paused quite a stir among the brethren on both sides of the line, Investigations and speculations in effect ruled the Fenian mind througtiout, or at least that portion which exercise the metaphysic functions and rido the walls of eifter “cstablishment.’? Those inside both have thy ads full, as a matter of course. OMINOUS ASPECT OF UNION BQUARE. Union eqrare is preparing for its convocation on the 2d of Janus ‘There are reports, documents and indict- mcnts of o most formidable nature in process of manu- tacture thece. None, however, were given to our re- porter, the calcclation being that they will do much more execotion when heralded under tho auspices of the august body in question, Then it ia believed the Yension cannonade will commence in right down earnest. None of the “malcontent” pronunciamentos or “imme- d’ate valuable” proclamations of by gono days will dare wompare with the double-shotted boomers that are to sweep down throvgh the historic sqvare, saluting, en ‘apt, “the great revolutionist on horseback,” and fic mally placlng the noble Romans of the Senate hors ds emu The Union square people are not communicative, Brothers Killian and O'Mahony, having given (-ub rosa) Several columns of private opinions public ‘on the eve of the fight, have beeu calmly viewing ther eperation and husbanding well meantime further fusi- for the doubtful fature, THK SENATORIAL QUARTERS, \ ‘The Senatorial gontiemen have beon operating in their mises as usual, thongh not in orgunized session, | One two rapid pen drivers were scen setting thin; Wight In thelr departments, “hoy ate earnest locking fcilows these Robertorial (not ‘reportorial) Fenians, ‘Th y pride in a go ahead whip and thorough style of pshing matters, They eye very curiously members of the press, and “will not be sociable at all while there's something io do.” sytisiog ‘They don't know whether there's or the press. ‘Their superior attends to such «i the reporter has to do the best he can, ‘Fenianism reformed,” though approachable, 4¢ uot very available for the press corps, WWO NEW SENATORS—“UNDER WHICH XING, BI ZONIAN?”* | The Senatorial annals yesterday were marked by th wrrival of two of “the noble Romans’? who have for tho Past eight days been at a respectable distance, with hearts throbb ag to every thrill of the electric conductors. “The “Council of Ten” puraued “the even tenor of its “way.” Of’ the reat one was stumping Philadelphia, &e. fox the O'Mahony side; another was atso in his service; mm third was standing ‘on the constit: ion near the Hub; a Jourth was reported on the fence; a fifth was; practising eiisi prins among the Hoosiers. Extensive has been the speculations, if not operations, of expectants regarding the culmination of this distress- jing dublousness, The “self-written. and self-published ‘wen matcoatents” were held up so high to the ececraion of the fraternity that it was only natura! to assume that ithe other “noble Romans’? would heep clear of ail con- ‘auct with them, and so it proved up to yesterday, ‘Two of them, however, positively arrived here. They fiave been clos:ly scanned, questioned and’ traced abrough their mental aad trian rounds, ey are Riill reticont. No hig se has as yet falien into the lap of wither party. Both have been plying their cases; and ‘now the great question in-Feniau minds is: “Under which Ring. Benzonian? Their adherence to the house of Mahony would undoubtedly be marked by an explicit peor Lg gh cpgpues 4 ‘ag it would from two of the cenest minds of the movement, from deliberatences ‘and cireunspsction, most assuredly fleece away a great geal of the Senatorial h and build up the fortunes ‘wi the old establishment to high triumph again, On the other hand, if, under the ciro»ms! A second hearing of Mr. Frederick Robinson, the Bug lish star at Wallnek’s, convinces us that he bolovgs to the lackad al school, which originated on tho French stage, and was thence trans‘erred to England and im ported here by the Wallacks, ‘The players of Uhis school do not act; they simply come before the andience and rehearse, To wear good clothes, look like a gentlenus, walk about gracefully, uiter witticisms with an inditfer- ent air, substitute nonehalance for passion, keep cool always and do everything quietly ave the requisite the lackadaisical school. Such acting as that of Garriek, of Talma, of ihe older Kean and of the elder Booth these stage fops and candies cannot comprebend, cannot approach, cannot appreciate. Mr. Robinson is an excel- lent representative of his school, and beats Taster Wallack on his own ground; but we hold thet the lackadaisical school is not a good one; that it has no fire, passion, short, it is not acting atall in any artistic sense of ihe word. Critics who do not recognize Unis distinction, fail to understand their business and ignorantly applund « style of performance which is perfectly cold aud insipid, not to say dawdling. ‘The other day we were made to call the two comedies in which Mr. Robinson appe “agrecable.”” A syllable was wanting. ‘They ara’ diss greeable little pieces, which bore the andiences tremen- dously, and were probably eelected by the envious man- agement of Wallack’s to ruin what little chances of sve cess Mr. Robinson had. ry. Ifa genuine actor, of the Garrick slump, were to appear in this age, how long would it take the public to forget and ignoro ali the lackadaisical Robingons on both aides the Atlantic? BABES IN THE WOOP At WINTER GARDEN. “It-may have been partially due to the cold wenther without, or to the uncomfortableness within, that only a tolerably filled house greeted the first production of two new pieces at the Winter Gurden last evening. Coxtain it is there were very many vacont seats in both parquet and dress circle. With about the walk and gesture of hi‘ Major de Boote, the necktie, make. up and illy assorted eye brows of his Timothy Toodtes, and a modicum of the part of Salem Sendder, Mr. J. ¥. Clarke mannged fo drat out numerous rounds of applause ws Jerem:ab Bectie, !n Taylor’s comedy, The Batvs in the Wood. Having boiled down those three comical characters into one, the reanlt is hardly to be wondered at. Had there hoon a warmer house and more of it, the reception of the piece would un- doubtedly have been much better. Aa it was Mr. Clarke tried very hard to make it a #uccess, Had he ap- peared less anxious on this score and acted more easily, he might have hit nearer the point be aimed at. Mra. Walcot, as Jady Blanche Rushton, was quite good. Frank Rushion, in the bands of Mr. Walcott was passable. But the crown- ing triumph—if triumph there could be in a mildly drawn two-act farce, mildly acted to @ chilly collection of spectators—of the entire performance was undonbt- edly achieved by Mr. Joun Dyott, as Earl of Lazenby, the father of Lady Blanche, who, spurred on by « hard- hearted stepmother, had disowned his only daughter for daring to marry against his wishes, Upon this act of the Rushtons the interest of the plece turn. And it is in the final reconciliation and the culmination of a by-plot, in which the domestic relations of Mr. and Mrs. Be-tle ave ventilated, that its happy denouement is reached, Mr. Dyott, as the repentant father, clandestinely follow: ing hie daughter and watching over ber in the changes and afflictions which come after the withdrawal of his support, bis tender regard for his darling child, his straggles to overcome the temper of Lady Lazenby, and the nataralness of his acting upon the occasion of his happy interview with the daughter, when (his temble woman has" been put down, were bits of character. Paluting and life-mimicry too natural and too affecting to fail iu bringing out the most genuine and spontaneons bursts of applause from the beholders. Mr. Dyott was called before the curtain apd warmly applauded at the end of the play, Mr. Clarke was the tiret recipient of the same compliment. The eveulng's entertainment concluded with Boncicaalt’s comic drama, Dedicated to Paronts’ aud Guardians, with Mr. Chuke im his character of Waddilove. THE MATINERS TO-DAY. The Satarday matinees which have been arranged at most of the leading places of awusement in (he city are exceedingly popular, more particularly with the ladies end children, To-day the afternoon amusements will be very attractive. At the Broadway theatre Mr. Chan- frau will appear, with the whole company, ina grand “Sam” matinee, at balf-past one o'clock. The Fenian’s Dream, or Ireland Free at Last, will be represented with effect in Tony Pastor's Opera House at half.past two At the New National Circus, Bowery, the daring and dazaling equestrian, gymnasti¢ and acrobathe feats of the fine troupe engaged thore will he gone through at half-past two o'clock, The programme for George Christy's Minstrel Company matines, at the Fifth Avenue Opera House, is avery select and most en. tertaining character. The matinee will commence at two o'clock. At two o'clock in the afternoon Professor and Madame Wiseman will display the wonders of the realms of mystery and vision to a crowded andience in Hope Chapel, Broadway. The American Express Company. Btrrato, Deo. 15, 1868, The Buffalo Courier, in alluding to the report that the New York Central Railroad haa been leased to the ox- press companies for the purpose of cutting off compoti- tion of the National Bonkers’ Express Company, says that so far as the American Express Company i# concernod the romor is as ridiculous as it is malicious, The rela- tions between the American Exprees Company and the Central Railroad are simply thoze which exist between that road and any other customer who pays contract prices for transportation.
