FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘Tumspar; Nov. 26-6 P. Me ‘Tho stock market has experienced a quick although but partial recovery to-day from the depression of last evening. At the early session of the open board Erie sold at 91% (sales 2,700), Hudson River 10834, Michigan Southern 7676 Clevelauat and Pittsburg (sales 4,100) $144, Northwestern” (sales 6,550) 3546 @ 34, preferred 6534; Fort Wayne 10434. At.the first regular board the market was “Active and the business well distributed ; -but there was waco ee in prices, New York Central Glosed 3%, lower than at the second board yesterday, Eric %, “wichigan Southern 4, Keading %, ete western 4, Rock Island 3, Mariposa, common, %; ton % Ohio and Missrssippi certificates %- ae Pigvoiand and Pittsburg and Northwestern -preferred were steady, Government securities continued weak, ‘Coupon five-twenties of the third isto were 5 lower, veclling at 98%; seven-thirty notes of the second series 34. The first series were higher, and the rest of the ist steady. _At the open board at one o clock the market was firm, “Gieveland and Pittsburg being the strongest and most active stock on the list, with sales of 8,200shares, At the second regular board there was a further tmprovement, ‘New York Contral closed 3¢ higher than at the first. board, Erie , Michigan Southern 34, Cleveland and Pittsbarg 1%, Northwestern 4%, preferred 3¢; Rock Island %, Fort Wayne %, Ohio and Mississippi certificates %, Canton %, Cumberiand 3, Quickellver 3, Mariposa 1. The latter company has advertised that the past gue coupons of ite first mortgage bonds wil be paid upon presentation. There are only about four thousand dollars of these outstanding, the balance having been funded into preferred stock, while of the next January coupons all ®ut eleven thousand dollars have been similarly con- verted. The suit of the company against the Receiver has just been decided in favor of the former, the re- ceivership being vacated upon the company paying the costs of the proceedings. Government securities were firmer. Coupon five-twenties of the old issue advanced 4%; seventhirty notes of the second feries 34. Five- twentics of the second issue were 3¢ lower, selling at 98%. ‘At the open board at half-past three prices yiclded a fraction on a portion of the list. Erie closed on the call at 9234, Hudson River 109, New York Central (b. 3) 96%, Michigan Southorn 75%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 92%, Rock Island 108, Northwestern 35%, preferred 653% ; Mariposa 14%, preferred 20; Quicksilver 46%, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 28%, Canton 46%, Schuylkill Coal 11. Afterwards, on the street, the market was dull and barely steady. ‘The supply of money was a ttle more abundant in proportion to the demand than yesterday, and although the general rate for call loans was seven per cont exceptions at six were not uncommon. This, considered in connection with the unusually large balance of $70,762,963 in the Sub-Trea- sury, is highly favorabie to prolonged monetary ease at this contre, The redemption of the five per cent notes on and after Friday next will add not far from twenty millions to the active currency, and the West and South being largely indebted to New York the drain of currency thence towards this point is likely to continue for a considerable time longer. Exchange on this city, ‘oth at New Orleans and Chicago, is scarce and firm, the ‘buying rates boing at or above par. Under this condition Of the money market, therefore, strong inducements ‘will be presented to operators for a rise on the Stock Ex- change, even in the face of any recommendations which Mr. McCulloch may make in his report in favor of con- traction, with a view to tho uitimate resumption of specie payments; forhe, as a practical man, must know that payments for eight or ten years to cone cannot be resumed, however desirous he sind all of us may be 40 achieve such a result, He za} ‘and probably will, advocate contraction, but he ‘will’ @e so soving on the other hand the inflation prodtived by the daily issues of the national banka, and the prospect of a considerable amannt in excess of the eriginal three hundred millions being author- ized by Congress for distribution in the Sodth. For th next three years, at least, the hands of the Secretary of the Treasury will be virtually tied by the necessity which he is under of meeting more than @ thousand millions of maturing obligations in currency, untess some unforeseen event should ra'se the price of six per cent bonds ubove par and induce conversions, which 4s very improbable. The discount line is firm, and the supply of commer- cial paper is increasing, The beat grade continues tu be quoted at 7 a9 and the second at 10415 percent. Lend. ers are critical of signatures, and only prime names are In favor, Gold has been in the ascendant. Tho market opened at 147%; and advanced to 148%, after which, at the close of business, it relapsed to 148, Thero was a sale made at the second stock hoard of $10,000 at 14%, seller 30 days. ‘Tho Sub-Treasury supplied the market during the early part of tho day, with a view niaimiy of increasing its sup- ply of currency in proparation for the redemp!!on of the “tadpole” notes, but without exerting any apparétt {n- fvence upon the premium. Thy European advices recoived toWay were Toassuring, five-twenties being quoted at 63%¢ a 64, Erie 54, and Illi- nois Central 61 a 8134, in London, and the builion in the Task gf England having incroased £371,000. Tho ad- wanee of £10 per ton in copper will doubtless influence ‘Vhe market for it here. Stock Exchange. ‘Toespay, Nov, 28—10:20 A. Mt.
