In this connection it may be mentioned that the cotton sold yesterday on governinert account will not be ready for delivery till mext week, and that consequently it is not likely to be paid for until then. The aggrogate of twenty-five mil- lions of Clearing House eertificates has not been dimin- ished, we find upon inquiry at the Sub-Treasury; but this is owing to the certificates cashed or hypothecated by banks in need of currency having been bought up by other banks not belonging to the association. The tem- porary loan notices are, however, maturing every day. Yesterday $454,000 were withdrawn, and to-day $860,- 422—making $7,019,000 since and inclusive of the 6th inst. The stock market has not been hammered with so much portinacity at any time during the last two or three years as during the last week. The consequence is that the market is largely oversold, and its likely to take a bound upward at any time, provided money is easy. Tho short interest is daily accumulating, and nearly the whole regular board of brokers have become bearish. Tho firmness of stocke under the ordeal to which they have been ‘subjected is surprising, and shows that the bull operators feel great confidence in their position. Although money is stringent at Chicago, the ware- hhouses are loaded. The Times of that city says that there is a stock of a million bushels of wheat there, fifty-Qve thousand barrels of flour, thirteen thousand bushels of corn, two million bushels of oats, and be- tween three and four hundred bushels of rye and barley, bosides hides, wool and other property, the whole proba- ‘bly representing a value of six millions of dollars, All ‘this indicates an unhealthy condition of trade. Thedemand for discounts continues active, and there is very little commercial paper taken under 74 a 8 per cent, while good names submit to 8 a 12 per cent, ‘The gold market was firm, the opening price being 146 and the closing one 146);. Loans were in most cases mado flat, The steamer Persia took out $400,000 in gold and the Edinburg $55,000. Foreign exchange was steady at yesterday's rates. It is noticeable that the demand for short bills has in- creased, owing tothe advance in the Bank of England rate to six per cent and the consequent uncertainty of gotting the long bills discounted, ‘The depression on the Prodicg Exchange, notwithstanding the firmness of the gold premium, shows the aetive’ demand which prevails for money in commercial as well as financial circles.
