FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monpar, Oct. 16—6 P. ‘The stock market opened steady this morning, but without ‘spirit, owing to the uncertainty regarding the supply of money and the anticipation of an unfavors- ble bank statement, At the first regular board prices @eclined a fraction. Erie closed 3 higher than at the same time on Saturday, Northwestern }s, Rock Island 3, Prairie duChien 3%. New York Contral was 34 lower, Hudson River 1, Reading %, Michigan Southern %, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Cumberland }¢, Quicksilver {. Northwestern preferred was unchanged. Govern- ment securities were heavy. Coupon five-twenties de- clined 3, sixes of 1881 3. Seven-thirty notes of the third series sold at 9775. At the open board at one o'clock the market was dull and a fraction lower. -\t the second regular board it was steady. Reading closed 14 higher than at the first board, Winois Central }, Cleveland and Pittsburg 3. New York Contral was % lower, Erie 3, Hudson River %, Micbigan Southern 3, Northwostern 34, preferred %, Prairio du Chien 1, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 5. Quicksilver was unchanged. Central American Transit Company sold at 37. Government securities were rather weak. Coupon five-twenties declined %. At the open board at half-past three it was heavy. New York Contral sold at 99, Erie 91%, Reading 11674, Michigan Southern 6534, INnois Central 138, Cleveland and Pittsburg 773, Rock Island 108}, Northwestern 81%, preferred (b. 3) 653. Afterwards, on the street, Erle declined to 90%, and the whole market was ‘unsettled. The leading stocks were hammered freely by the bears, and some of the bulls, forming new combinations, assisted the docline for the purpose of buying at lower figures, At the same time afew of the bull operators ‘on narrow margins became timorous and 801d out. ‘There was an active, and in part artificial, demand for money at seven por cent, but the wants of houses in fair credit were freely supplied at that rate, ‘Tho bank statement was generally regarded as more favorable than it really is, The decrease of $8,052,587 in the legal tender notes is almost entirely owing to the payments into the Sub-Treasury of compound interest notes on account of the fifty million funding loan, and this, thorefure, indicates nothing thet can affect the money market. The contraction of the loanable resources ef the banks is, however, shown im the decrease of $6,140,830 in deposits, The Western banks have been drawing their balances rather closely of Jato, ewing to the partial stringency which provails in their section, and the Treasury has been doing like- wise upon its natiomml bank depositaries in order to in- crease its reserve, in proparation for a reduction of the temporary deposits. The Treasury balances still remain- {ng with the national banks are very small, and the dis- bursements of the Sub-Treasury are going forward rapidly. The payments on account of the temporary loan to-day were large, and will eontinue so during the week, The increase of $2,420,611 in specie is traceable to the recent sales of coin by the government. The de- crease of $975,843 in loans is consistent with the de- crease in deposits, aud loss than was generally supposed. ‘The demand for discounts is very active, and only strict- ly first class paper passes at 7.28 per cent, the latter be- ing the most commen rate, Ordinary good is quoted at 9 a 12, and doubtful names moet with little favor, There is nothing, however, in the condition of monetary affairs to create distrust or warrant any uneasiness, the tenden- cy bemg towards greater ease. Tho gold market was firmer under the Furopean ad- vices reporting the advance of the Bank of England rate of discount to five per cent on the 2d inst., and six per ©~+ on the Sth. Itis argued that should any monetary Pressure ~js@ abroad the price of five-twenties there would either decline, im common with other securities, or fail vw advance, and thet tn either case the inducements to ship them from this side would rather diminish than increase, and that should the export of securities receive a chock, gold, for which they have served as a substi(ute, would require to ‘be shipped instead. It is not to be ignored that the advance in the bank rate from four per cent on the 28th ultimo, on which day it” was «4- vanced to 434, is rather sudden, but the monte- tary signs there foreshadowed such an advance. The brisk demand for discounts which has led to these advances is reported to have reduced the bank reserves ss low a point as when the rate was eight percent, and thé tormer is attributed to the speculations in domestic and foreign produce, cotton, of course, being one of the leading articles. The eticct, therefore, of the Bank of England putting the screw on promptly will be to check that speculation and reduce the demand for money, although it may reduce prices in some degree and retard exports from this port. The operation is always highly conservative, and it affords no ground for apprehension of monetary disturbance; but it docs exert rome influence in hastening remittances from other coun- tries, aud hence the increased firmness of gold and ex- change to-day. The opening price of the former was 145, from which there was a steady aivance to 14534 0% at ths close of business, Tho foreign bankers generally advanced their drawing rate to 10934 this morning une the influence of the slight decline in five-twenties and other securities on the London stock exchange aud the other causes affect- ing gold, but importers were anwilling to buy at it, and Yt declined to 109; « 3g duving the afternoon. Francs participated in the improvement, owing to the Bank of Trayce ‘having advanced its rate of discount from three tefovr per cent, and they were quoted at 5.17 a 6.15, he following Ogures compare the iast weekly sta meat & the New York associated banks with the re- turns ofthe previous week :— Ort, 14.
