FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. a = ‘ Wenwespay, Oct. 11—6 P. M. The stock market was without spirit this morning, owing to the large realizations which took place on Mon- day and Tuesday, ana still lingering apprehensions in the minds of some chat the prevailing moderate activity in monetary channels might develop into. stringency. At the first board New York Central closed % lower than at the second board yesterday, Erie , Reading %, Michigan Southern 3, Northwestern preferred %, Rock Island 15, Fort Wayne %, Ohio and Mississippi certt- ficates %{, Quicksilver 3, Northwestern, common, was unchanged. Prairie du Chien advanced 4, Bank stocks were in demand. There was some inquiry for city railroad stocks, and 60 was bid and 62 asked for Second Avenue, and 126 bid and 140 asked for Sixth Avenue. These stocks are favorite investments with the public, and hence they seldom change hands. Government gold bearing securities continued firm. Coupon five-twenties were % higher, seven-thirty notes of the third series %. There was a sale of Pacific’Mail stock at 225, scrip 210. At the open board at one o'clock the market was strong and Erie advanced to 923g. It was rumored on the street that a large shipment of the stock had been made by the steamers sailing to-day, but this proved on inquiry to have been exaggerated. About four thousand shares were transferred to-day for foreign account and about five hundred shares from foreign to home parties. The following gentlemen wore re-elected directors of the company at the annual meeting held on the 10th inst. :— Samuel Marsh, Daniel-Drew, John Arnot, William B. Skidmore, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Robert H. Berdell, Dudley & Gregory, Ralph Mead, Ambrose 8. Murray, William Evans, J. C. Bancroft Davis, H. L. Pierson, D. A. Cushman, Alexander 8. Diven, Thomas W. Gale, Isaac NN. Phelps and J. F. D. Lanier. At the second regular board the market was firm, but prices were in gome instances a fraction below the ex- treme figures touched on the street. Erie closed % high- er than at the first board, Reading 1, Michigan South- ern 1%, Northwestern preferred 34, Prairie du Chien 144, Fort Wayne 34, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 34, Cum- borland 34. Rock Island was 3% lower. Thero was a strong demand for coupon five-twenties for shipment, and the old issue rose to 105—an advance of 3 since the morning board, The new issue sold at 1022¢—an advance of %. Coupon sixes of 1881 sold at 108!¢—an advance of % since yesterday. Ten-forties were steady. ‘At the second open board the market was strong and prices a fraction higher. New York Central closed at 108, Erie 0234, Reading 118, Michigan Southern 76%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 835, Rock Island 11035, North- western 8134, preferred (b. 3) 66%, Fort Wayne (b. 3) 10234. The gold market was dull, but it showod a slightly up- ward tendency, the opening price being 1442{, and the closing one 14534. The supply for delivery continues ebundant, and loans were made without interest. The steamer Ocean Quesn, from Aspinwall, brought $1,362,775 in gola) The European stoamers took out no specie. There were no transactions of importance in forcign exchange, and the market was heavy. Bankers’ bills at sixty days were sold at 100% a %%, but leading drawers asked 109% a %. The exports for tho weck ending on the 10th inst. show a currency value of $4,161,006. The chief articles of export wore corn, oats, flour and cotton, 10,672 bales of the latter betng included in the return. This im- provement in the export trade, together with tho shipment of securities, more than neutralizes temporarily the effect of our previous heavy importations and light exports; but the imports are likely to continue far in ex- cess of the latter for an indefinite period to come. For the tame being, however, the dulness of exchange will Operate against any rise in the price of gold. The condi- tion of affairs in Great Britain may, not be without influ- ence upon the foreign exchanges. The advance in the iscount rate of tho Bank of England from 4 per cent, at which it was fixed on the 3d of August, to 434 per cent on the 29th ultimo, is accepted in England as the pre- lude to a further advance, the bank having lost £259,023 in specie during the previous week, a considerable portion of which was absorbed by the Irish banks. Should the Fenian excitement nmke further progress this absorption of specie will increase, and in proportion to the drain will be the advance in the bank rate of interest and the firmness of exchange on Europe here. But the fact of the bids for the Erie loan of £800,000 having aggregated £3,700,000, shows that there is noither pressure nor distrust at present, and it is hardly probable that there will be, the bank rate being still low. The fact of the amount of business transacted in American securities in London being of ‘a magnitude unprece- dented since the outbreak of the rebellion,” five- twenties having sold up to 70%, is indicative of no lack of confidence.* Petroleum stocks were dull at tho first board, and ‘Wobster closed 3c. lower than at the same time yester- Gay; Montana 10c., Oil Crock 30c., United States Sc. Shade River was 5c. higher, First National lo. At the gecond board United States closed at $2940, or 250. lower; Oll Creck $137, or 18c. lower; Pithole Creek $8 90, Bennehoff Run $12 50, Germania 36c., Heydrick $1, First Natioal 37c., Rynd Farm $1 01. The buying rates for compound interest notes were:— December 1024, October 103%, August 104, July 104%, June 1053. Tne Treasury statement of the receipts and expendi- tures for the quarter ending June 30, 1865, shows that the latter were at the rate of eight millions per day, in- cluding payments of interest on the national debt. The business at the Sub-Treasury to-day was as fol- ing October 7:— ‘The earnings of the Great Western Railway of Canada during the week ending October 6 amounted to $92,082, witch shows an increase over the receipts for the same time in 1864 of $28,962. ‘The returns of the Bank of England for the week end- ing Beptember 27 compare with the statement of the previous week as follows :— Ta,p00'si The Bank of France return for the woek onding Sep. tember 28 shows the following changes compared with Previous account ;—Increase—Treasury balance, 32 1.6 millions; bills, 11% millions, Docrease—Ourrent nc. counts, 13 46 millions; cash, 7 1-6 millions; notes, 6)¢ millions, Advances, million. Capital on the continent of Europe at last dates was in improved request, but the qrotations were unaltered. ‘The traffic receipts of railways in the United Kingdom of Groat Britain amounted for the week ending the 234 of September, on 12,252 miles, to £740,058, and for the corresponding week of last year, on 11,915 mules, to £096,392, showing an increase of 9837 miles and of £A3,006, American securities were quoted in London on the 29th ult. as follows :— 70 70} & i o% aa &@ 7 a 70 % a 77 80 a 82 boxe 00% Bie BN J he 101 2 108 a 88 aw” for the last, £80, 751,861 108,716,219 102,400,606 } 1865 of £6,816,523, as compared with 1804, and an in- spection of the tables shows that this total is made up by & slight falling of for the present year in every month, except January and March, compared with the corresponding months of last year. $5000UE6's5-20cexNe 10454 SMoposees aoewtaNs 102 2000 d0...-40.++ 102: 28000 U 8 6's,10-40 «. 5000 ‘Tr n 7.80 2dse, 10000 50% 2000 Mich Gensel = 8000 Alt & TH2mprf 79 1000Pitts, FtW&C3m 86 4000 A&GW1mn,Odiv 97 42 shs Mech Bank. . = OOK 100 Contral Nai Bank 1ll}g 300 20 Bk Commonwt’h 100 b3O0 42% 200 42% 100 do.2d ¢, “bio 43° «500 100 Central Coal Go., 59 200 100 Cumb Coal pret. 4734 300 d0., .sesses. 8B do......... 47 400Chic&NWRR. 31 {oo Quicksilver M, 49% bd ih?
