FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Toxspay, Oct. 10-6 P. M. ‘The stock market was strong at the first session of the open board this morning, but at the regular board it was somewhat feverish and lower, the weakest stock on the list being Michigan Southern, waich closed at a decline of 2% from yesterday's second board price. Cleveland and Pittsburg receded 1%, Northwestern 4, ‘preferred %. New York Central was % higher, Erie 4, Hud- son River 3%, Reading %, Rock Island \, Fort Wayne 1, Prairie du Chien 3}, Ohio and Mis- sissippi certificates 3g, Quicksilver %%. Pacifle Matt scrip sold at 207, Atlantic Mail 147, Mariposa Mining 12. The latter company commenced paying the coupons of its first mortgage bonds to-day in certificates receiva- ble for preferred stock, at the rate of 145 for gold. Gov- ernment securitios were stronger. Coupon five-twent:es of the old issue advanced 34, sixes, of L881 44. At the open board at one o’clock the market was steady, at a fractional decline, At the second regular board it remained steady, and New York Central closed 3 lower than at the first board; Erie %, Hudson River 5%, Reading X, Michigan Southern %, Northwestern i, Rock Island 34, Fort Wayne \, Prairie du Chien %, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 3, Quicksilver 1. Govern- ment securities experienced a further improvement. Coupon five-twenties were % higher, sixes of 1881 %. ‘The advanced quotation for five-twenties in London is imparting considerable strength to these bonds on this side, and they are in brisk demand, in anticipation of higher figures, The advance abroad, followed by s cor- responding movement here, will have the effect.cie} igdeme gee,’ stimulating subscriptions to the fifty million funding loan. The subscriptions already recorded amount to ‘bout fifteen millions only, but this is partly in conse- quence of the whole of the month being available for the conversions, many of the banks intending to sub- scribe to the loan not yet having made up their parcels. At the same time there 18 no strong inducement to fund compound interest notes into five-twenties at 103 while tho latter are selling below that point in the open mar- ket. But the fifty millions offered will be taken not- withstanding. At the open board at half-past three the market was quiet and a shade lower, New York Central sold at 103, Erie 907%, Hudson River 109, Read- ing 117, Michigan Southern 7, Illinois Central 13454, Cleveland and Pittsburg 823%, Rock Island 111, North- westorn (b. 3) 30%, preferred 6534, Fort Wayne 102, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 29%. Afterwards, on the street, the market was rather dull. The disposition to speculate fora rise, however, has undergone no abate- ment; but the cliques have been quiet to-day. There was a good deal of talk about the active demand for money, and this had some effect in checking opera- tions for a rise; but there is nothing in the present or prospective condition of the loan market to warrant the slightest apprehensions of stringency. There is a rather active demand from the Stock Exchange, but there is no diMflculty in the way of borrowing at seven per cont on call, although the discount lino is absorbing a larger amount of funds than usual. The subscriptions to the funding loan wit deprive the sub- scribing banks of the use of the amount of their sub- scriptions between the time of lodging their interest bearing motes or certificates and receiving the bonds in return; but the amount subscribed will bo widely distributed over the country, and it can hardly exert any perceptible influence at this centre. Nevertheless, the process is the beginning of a policy of contraction, the development of which will, however, involve a long period of time. The current rate of seven por cent is calculated to attract a large amount of capital from othor points, and hence a gradual increase of loan- able funds is likely to be experienced here, while the demand for discounts will probably diminish, The rate for first class commorcial paper varies from 7 to 9 per cent, and from 10 to 12 for the second grado. ‘The gold market was heavy and loan¢ were made flat. Tho opening price was 14534, from whicn it declined to 144X, and then recovered to 14534, finally closing at 1455. 2 The demand for foreign exchange to-day was light, and bankers’ bills at sixty’ days were sold at a reves- sion of % & %% from those of last Frida but leading drawers continue to ask 109% a %. Im- porters are deferring their remittances in the expecta- tion of an increased supply of cotton bills soon; but the effect of these is probably over estimated. In referring to the sharp advance of fourpence half-penny, English money, in the price of cotton in Liverpool yesterday, wo were made, by a misprint, to speak of the advance as 4340, instead of 43¢d., the English ponny, as all know, being equivalent to about two cents reckoned in gold. Petroleum stocks were a little less active at the first board. First National closed 7c. higher than at the samo time yesterday, Oil Creek 35c., United States 70c. McClintock and Mount Vernon were unchanged. Bu- chanan Farm was 8c. lower, Excelsior 5c. At the sec- ond board McClintock was 50c. lower, closing at $8 50; Empire City Sc., closing at 50c. ; Oil Creek 25c., closing at $1 85. United States rose 20c., closing at $29 70; P:thole Creek 10c., closing at $7 75. Buchanan Farm closed at 85c., Germania S4c., Knickerbocker 15c., First National 300., Rynd Farm $1 03.
