2 p FINANCIAL AND ) COMMERCIAL. Monpay, Oct. 9—6 P. M. ‘The stock market manifested an improving tendeney | this morning, and as the day advanced the disyo-ition to renew operations for a rise increased, New York Contrat \@ being the leading favorite. At the first board the latter closed 23¢ higher than at the same time ou Saturday, Erie %, Reading %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 1g, North- western }¢, preferred %, Fort Wayne 2)/, Vrairte du Chion 1%, Ohio and Mississippl certiticntes %, @umberiand 3, Quicksilver %. There was salo of Panama Railroad stock = at 240. | State stocks were firm, Government securities were quiet, Coupon five-twenties of the new issue advanced 36. Coupon ten-forties were 34 lower. After the call Erie advanced to 91, upon the China’s advices reporting the stock at 6034 8 603¢ in London on the 30th ult. Gold bearing securities also became Stronger under the quotation of 708 3g for five-twentics on the same date, ‘The board suspended general business for a short time to consider a complaint relative to the trans- fer systom of the Cleveland and Pittsburg Rail- way Company. It was stated that a letter of in- quiry upon the subject had been addressed to its president about a fortnight ago, but that no answer bad been returned, and a motion was made to strike the stock from the list, After some sharp discussion the subject was tabled. It is contended that the company ought to have a transfer agent in this city, and not leave its business to the care ofa bank. The matter will probably be so adjusted as to remove objections by the president signing the certificates and the bank offi- cers countorsigning them. ‘At the open board at one o'clock the market was active ‘and buoyant, and at the second regular board the improve- ment was sustained, Michigan Southern and New York Central being the strongest on the list, The former closed 53¢ higher than at the first board, and the latter 244, Erie 2, Hudson River 1%, Reading 1, Illinois Central 244, Cleveland and Pittsburg 34, Northwestern %, pre- ferred %, Rock Island 1}, Prairie du Chien 133. Th large increase in the earnings of the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad—those from January 1 to Anguet 31 having been $294,090 in excess of those for the corresponding period last year—is attracting attention to the certificates, in view of the probubility of their ultimate conversion into a dividend-paying stock. Fort Wayne and Quicksilver were steady. Government gold Doaring securities wore in a little better demand, and ol five twenties were sirong at an advance of 3. Seven ‘and three-tenths notes of the third series were, however, heavy at 98—a discount of two per cent, At the open board at half-past three the market was a fraction lower, except for New York Central, which 4 vanced to 103%. Erie closed at 81%, Hudson River 109%, Michigan Souther 77%, Reading 117%, Prairie du Chien 6 Cleveland and Pittsburg 88%, Rock Island J11%, North- western (b. 8) 31%, preferred 67, Fort Wayne 102, Olio and Mississippi certifica‘es (b. 3) 803s, Cumberland 47, Central Coal 59};, Quieksilver 51. ‘Afterwards, on the street, the market was a shade lower on a portion of the list. bd Petroloum stocks were steady at the first board, with the exception of United Stales, which was $1 50 lower than at the same time on Saturday; MecClin- tock, which was 40c. higher, and Buchanan Farm 3c. At the sesond board the market was irregular, Pichole Creck closed at $7 05, Bennchoff Run $12, Buchanan Farm 86:., Empire city 45¢., Ex- coisior 80c., Germania 36c., First National 32c., Oll Creek $1 00, Bynd Farm $1, United States $29. ‘Tho gold market underwent a further weakening, con- sequent upon the news of the advance of 41¢c. per pound in cotton at Liverpool, and the great activity and ad- vance in American securities abroad. The avidity with which the Erie bonds offered for subscription at 75 ‘were taken up would seem to foreshadow an increased demand for our railway-and national stocks in England. The sudden rise in the price of American cotton in the Liverpool market is, however, not likely to stimulat> its export from this side, as the advance abroad has been already neutralized by the rise of 10c. a 12c. per pound whieh has taken place here to-day. The opening quota- ton was 1465, from which there was an advance of % and then a gradual decline to 145%, at which th market closed. The supply of coin was abundant, and loans were made flat. b Foreign exchange was dull but steady at Friday’s rates, There is just now a partial lull in the import trade, owing to the wants of tho fall trade having beon to agreat extent supplied; but the spring orders which have been sent abroad are generally represented to be unusually heavy, and hence there is every prospect, in view of the probable exports, of a firm market for ox- change for some time to come. The advance in the Bank of England rate of discount, showing the increased demand for money, operates in this direction, and has already strengthened the rate for short sight bills. ‘The demand for money is active in the discount line ‘and moderately so from the Stock Exchange, which lat- ter is mot at seven per cent on call, with a few excep- tions of government securities at six. The supply of capital is fully equal to the demand, although the statement of the associated banks for the week, if we exclude the First National Bank, which wos not included in last week’s return, hows an increase of more than four millions in loans, ‘with an increase of only about a quarter of a million in deposits. But as the First National formorly made its clearances through some other bank belonging to the Clearing House, its affairs were more or less represented by that medium. We therefore find a less disproportion when we accept the figures of the full statement, Which show an increase of $6,702,087 in loans and $4,673,770 in deposits, There is @ loss of $173,048 in the specio line, and of $846,078 ‘im the legal tender notes. There is every reason to look for an easier market, this week than last, as a consider- able number of loans ‘were suddenly called in by the banks for the purpose of putting them out again at the ‘advanced rate of seven per cent, Under this condition of monetary affairs, in the present highly speculative tomper of the sireet, there is reason te look for renewed excitement and higher prices on the Stock Exchango before any considerable break occurs. The market is, however, likely to be more or less spasmodic in its movements, while the attention of the operators will be mainly confined to the active clique stocks. ing figures compare the last weekly state- New York associated banks with the re- turns ef the previous week :— Oct. 7.
