—_—_——— FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Faspay, Oct. 6—6 P.M. ‘The stock market continued active and in the ascend- fantat the first session of the open board and at tho regular board this morning. At the latter New York Coutral closed 2: higher than at the second board yes- terday, Hudson River 13, Roading 3, Cleveland and Pittsburg 4}, Northwest.ra %, Rock Island 2%, Fort Wayne 8, Ohio and Mississippi $s. Erie was % lower, Michigan Southern 4, Cumberland 3. Quicksilver was unchanged, Western Telegraph sold at 74. Government securities were inactive. Coupon five-twenties of the old issue were steady, The new issue declined 44, At the open beard at one o'clock the market was de, . pressed by sales to realize, induced by a break in gold, consequent upon a sale of coin by the Sab-Treasury, Afterwards on the street prices were unsettled, and @t the second regular board the market was feverish. New York Central closed 14 lower than at the first board, Brie 23;, Hudson River 1% {allowing @ per cent for the semi-annual divi- dend), Reading %, Michigan Southern %, Illinois Central 34, Cleveland and Pittsburg 4%, Northwestern 1%, preferred 2%, Prairie du Chien %, Rock Island %, Fort Wayne 23g, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 1, Quicksilver 1. Cumberland was unchanged. Govern- mont securities were neglected. Afterwards, on the street, weven-thirty notes of the third serivs sold at 98 a 4. In regard to the latter a correspondent asks us “why it ia that they are two per cont below par, while green: backs are good for their face, the security in each case being equal?’ The answer is, because the one is a legal vender, whereas the other is not, and seven-thirties, alike with other government secur ties not a tegal tender, fluctuate with the market, Our oorrespondent continues:—*‘1, with many others, was induced. by the representations of the government through its agent to purchase under the belief that a one hundred dollar note would increase in value two ents per day, but on trying to convert iny note into our- rency [found that I could only get nincty-nine dollars and thirty-seven cents for it, interest included."’ The in- crease referred to applies to the accumulation of interest only, and whoever wishes to convert s*curities before therr maturity must be content to do so at their market value. At the expiration of three yoars from their date the seven-thirty notes are redeemable in currency or con- vertible into a six per cent gold stock, at thé option of the holders, It is natural that some of the working classes, who have invested their hard carnings in these notes instead of depositing them in savings banks, should feel disposed to complain over the discount; but there t mo reason why thote who in- tend to bold them should regret their investment. At the open board at half-past three the speculative stocks continued to give way, Michigan Southern and Cleveland and Pittsburg being specially weal. The lat ter sold down to 704, Cloveland and Pittsburg 81%, Now York Central 987%, Erie 899%, Hudson River (4,3) 101%, Reading 116, Michigan Southern 795%, Rock Island 110, Northwestern 30, preferred 66, Fort Wayne 99, Me- Gregor Western (b.10) 235%, Terre Haute and Alton 38, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 2914, Canton 42, Central Coal (b.10) 58, New York Guano 163g, Q' silvor 4034. Aftorwards, on the street, the market was steady. At five o'clock Michigan Southern was quoted at 79%, Ere 80%, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 295;, Cleveland and Pittsburg 82. Reading 12644. Petroleum stocks were moderately active at the first board. Pithole Creek closed 10c. lower than at (he same time yesterday; Tack 40. higher, United States 20°, At’ the second board the market was steady, Wobater closod at $1 13, Bonncho® Run $1220, Buchanan Farin $1 03, Excelsior 850., First National 270, Oi Creek $1 20; Rynd Farm 84c,, United States $20 64. The gold market bax been active aud cxcited. I opened strong at 1474¢ and rose rapidly to 149, when the Sub-Treasury began selling some of its surpins. The tide instantlyturned under a general rush to sel!, aud the price fe from the highest price touched to 46% within an hour, It subsequently reacted to 14734, but relapssd to 1466, at which it closed. The sudden rise was iu part attributable to epeculation based upon the heavy demand for customs duties, and the prospect of logitinate causes carrying the premium higher. The money market war active ai 647 percent, and soveralof the banks notified their customers that they had advaubed the rate for loans at eal! to seven per ceut. Phis gave courage to the bears on the Stock Exchange, and caused many of the balls to realize. From the opening of business in the morning it was obsorvable that the supply of Michigan Southorn stock was larger than yesterday, apd that the “corner”? was giving way, and at and after the first board the bear chque in Erie again showed iteelf and did considerable execution. The reaction was greater than was expected today, and desperase offorts will doubtless be made to rally the market, which wii! probably be more or less successful, for the rise of the past few days has brought in a num ber of outside speculators, who almost invariably operate for a rise, AY operators lean, naturally, to the bull sid», and it ig generaily not until experience has taught them some severe legeons that t become ‘‘bears'’ in self- defen + The present pricé® of most of the speculative railway stocks are above their real value, aad thore is no change in the condition or affairs of the roads (hey Fepresent to warrent the receut sudden ri To argue from this point of view, bowover, while the spirit of specuiatian is rife aud money cau be easily borrowed, would be useless. The motley crows of stock- jobbers knows little and cares less about the merits or demons of the stocks dealt in, A period of spasmodic mtiviiy has followed the chronic dulmess which reigned for some months in Wall street, and in the end a host f ovtgide advent: rete will have to sul burdea pf bigh proce? stocks, heid ona ket.
