2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘Tauravay, Oct. 5—6 P. M. ‘The stock market has been strong and excited to-day, the speculative fever having heightened, and the en- thusiasm of the bulls being sustained by the rapid ad- vance of quotations, At the first board New York Cen- tral closed 3; higher than gt the second board yesterday, Erie 294, Hudson River 134, Reading , Michigan Soath- ern 24, Cleveland and Pitsburg 1%, Fort Wayne %, Northwestern 1%, preferred 3s, Ohio and Missis. sippi certificates %, Quicksilver 2. Cumberland was unchanged. Michigan Southern stock was very scarce for delivery, and % per cont per day was paid for it by Dorrowers. Government securities were steady, but inactive, ‘the open board at one o'clock a large business was ‘and prices were higher. At the second rogular board the extreme quotations on the street were not fully maintained, except in the case of Cleveland and m. sland %, Fort Wayne %, Quicksilver 1%. New York Central was umehanged. Hudson River de- lined %, Reading 3, Northwestern %, Ohio and Mis- sissippi certificates §g, Camberland 3. Government eeourities continued dull, and coupon fve-twenties were 36 lower. After the call the market regained its buoyancy, and Cleveland and Pittsburg sold up to 85. At the open — board “at half-past three thore was renewed excite- ment, and a further general advance took place. New York Cantral sold at 975, Erie 92%, Hudson River 112X, Reading 117%, Michigan Southern 84%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 84%, Rock Island 1104, Northwestern 81, preferred 6334, Fort Wayne 99, Prairie du Chien 5734, McGregor Western 2434, Canton 435¢, Cumberland 475, Quicksilver 53, Central Coal 59, Ohio and Mississippi cor- tificates 505. Afterwards there was increased inquiry for the latter, under a reported clique movement, These certificates, which sold at 6? in March and April, 1864, have not as yet participated more than two percent in tho present rise, The market cloved retive and steady. There is a notuble accession of outside speculators and orders from the country. [i is generally tho case thut when prices are nearing their zenith upon an excited market the public kindly step in and buy the stocks which the brokers and professional operators are g'ad to De relioved of. Asyet the outside multitude isnot s2fll- ciontly large to absorb the, load in store for them, and moreover there is a prospect of prices being forced considerably higher be‘ore the present speculative excitement subsides. The market will break of its own weight before many more days elapse, and there will be arush to realize; but it is likely that a fresh rise will succeed the reaction and continue until the bull element has spont its force or prices rise £0 bigh as to recoil upon and demoralize the bulls themselves, or some unlooked for event occurs to create distrust, The present rise is almost entirely artificial; but a0 long as the country is flaoded with an irredeemable and depreciated cur- rency all prices w'll be more or less fictitious represent- atives of vaine, and there is great danger of much fur- ther inflation in the future, There is the danger of political agitation of the Onancis! question, The votes of the representatives of the reconstructed States in Congress are almost certain to be opposed to the present heavy tariff, and in favor of the lightest possible tax- ation, The interests of the South have always been iu harmony with free trade principles, and consequently opposed to a protective tariff, The Southern States will probably yeturn to the Union with the same views to support as they advocated ante- cedent to the war, rendered all the more bitier by the war itself. - An@ it is this consideration, as well as the more immediate question of our export and import trade, which is influencing the course of gold. Tho latter was firm to-day, tho opening price being 148%, from which there was an advance to 147%, fol- lowed by a relapse to 146%; end a subsequent rise to 146%. Loans were made at six percent and 1-32, The extreme quotations since the commencement of the yoar havo been as follows: — Highest, ‘198 196% 1433 is 4 ise 140% 14255 Foreign exobaage is dull but firm at 109% for bankers’ billa at sixty days. Tho rate asked is, however, 1007 alld Petroleum stocks were lower at the first board than at the same time yesterday, with the exception of Webster, which advanced 10c., and Germania and Tack, which were stendy. Pithole Creck showed a declino of 10¢., Buchanan Farm 22., Rynd Farm 5c., United States 0c. At the second board the market was generally lower. Pithole Creek closed at $7 80, Webster $1 20, Ham & McClintock $6 75, Buchanan Farm #0c., Empire City 55c., Knickerbocker 10c., Oil Creek $1 18, United States $30 25, McKinley $8 25. The money market increased in activity to-day in pro- portion to the increased demands of the Stock Exchange, ‘and no now loans were mado under six per cent, while the outstanding loans at five were advanced one percent. Towards the ciose 0° besiness a few transac- tions wore made at seven, Ther is, however, no danger of present stringency. The discount line ‘s active, and commeroial paper of tho first class is rated at 7a $3¢ per cent, with very few transactions at the former rate. Very good paper submits to a charge of 9 a 12 por cont. The funding loan makea little progress, owing to the sub- scribers having the option of deferring their subserip- tions till the end of the month; but the amount.o* bonds offered will bo freely taken, and almost exclusively in ox- change for five-twenties. ‘The torms of the Erie loan are variously construed, bat leas unfavorably than some auticinated. ne £800,000 of bonds were sold at £70 per £100 by Mr. Pear- gon in London, as we stated a fortnight ago, and placed on the market at the subscription price of £75, by J. S. Morgan & Co., the succossors of Peabody & Co. This would give to the company, with jold at 146, about $3,696,000 in currency.
