He appears, according to the accounts of several of his acquaintances, to have consented to this arrangement; but the moment his wife left him he changed his. mind, and dectined to withdraw ‘the Dill. MRS. BEACH THREATENS TO SHOOT HER HUSBAND. On the afternoon of Monday Mrs. Beach met her bus- band in front of the museum, and they walked — oage over Ciurk street bridge, and thence towards While walking up the avenue the wife draw the bill, aud. he reused. gl> barrelled Smith & Wesson pistol Ket, and told him that unless he agreed to proposed she would shoot him down on the ite the Dill unless he withdrew it. Finding himself completely in the power of a young, beautiful but determined little woman, he reluctantly consented, and they retarned along Clark street and parted, apparently on good terms, at the museum. what she hi spot. She told him she was.determined to antic! THE TRAGEDY. Yesterday she learned that Beach had not fuldiied his promise, and that the bill was still before the court, She seems to have then determined on the direst revenge. She Joaded the pistol and placed eight or ten curtridges in her pocket, in case one might not prove effectual. She then posted herself, carly inthe evening, in the vestibule of the museuin. ’ She walked backwards and forwards im- patiently, tly as if she were waiting anxiously for rome one. Officer Edwards, who is attatched to the es- tablishment, knew her by sight, and was aware that she was waiting for her hueband to make his appearance. | Beach bad told him that he was greatly troubled by her following him to the theatre, and that he had been una- ‘bie to attend rehearsal owing to ber violent conduct ao the previous day. Edwards suggested that the matter could easily be remedied, as he would prevent her from entering the building, if Beach wished it. Beach was not inclined, however, to proceed to tals extremity, and the matter dropped. SHE SHOOTS HIM DOWN IN THE GREENROOM. About eight o’clock last Beach entered the vestibule of the theatre and found his wife waiting impa- tently for him. By a strange coincidence, they retired to the room where stands the wax statue of the martyr Pres.dent. Here they stopped for about half an hour, and, as the.door leading to the roam was open, the door: Kooper heard high words pass between them. They came jut together, Beach telling her, that it was time for him to dress for his appearance in the comedy of “ Sybilla,”” which wasthen gaing on, and he entered the “green- room’? door, which was standing open. The woman fol- Jowed, and czclaimed. in an angry tone, “Will you once for all withdraw that bill?” He turned and replied, “No, Gus, I will not do it!” “Then take that!’ she eri levelling her pistol, she fired. The bullet lodged neck of her victim, near the spinal column, and he fell flat on his face. Officer Edwards rushed forward to pick up the wounded-maa, and the girl—for she is in reality nothing but a girl—turned on her heel, cool and collected as if che had done a brave action. Officers Willian H. Tunniclife and. Thomas Meore were entering the theatre at the time, and the instant they heard the report of the pistol they ‘turned, and the girl almost ran into their arms. HER CONDUCT AFTERWARDS. Officer Tunnicliffe, observing the man iying on the ground with the oozing from the wound in his requested officer Moore to attend to him and called on ce odieal ‘Edwards to wend forasurgéon, Both orders were strictly obeyed. Tunnicliffe asked the girl what she had done with the pistol, when she replied with a pieazant smile, “I threw it on the floor; wasn't I fool- har" She seemed to be highly elated at the deed she jone. HER FATHER WISHES TO FINISH THE JOB. . Among those who came out of the theatre into the vestibule was Mr. Alfred Randall, the fathor of Mrs. Beach. The moment he was made aware of what ‘taken place he inquired in an excited tone if Beach was dead. | Recetving a reply in the negative ho expressed wish to finish the job which his daughter had begun. The machinery arrived here safely, and ond + the signals has already vate sits gd re at condi and ag we previously mated, working condition. members. oF col ey =| accompanied by. me "Daboll and. the’ Raperiniendest aganees, and one or two other gentlemen, visifed Sam! day in the steamer Boxer to witness the operation of the machine and hear it blow. A little description of the siqpat in go 3m question may not be uninteresting. Daboll makes use of Ericsson’s caloric engine for power to condense the air into an air tank, or receivez, ‘and with this condensed air blows a reed trumpet, which ap @ very peculiar sound. Affixed to the main shaft of the engine is an ingenious automatic arrai t, which opens the valve upon the mouthpiece of the trumpet, causing it to blow three or four times a minute, ar Dlast occupying five or six seconds, and at the same time revolves the trumpet so that the sound is thrown from ‘one point to er. The sector wheel which regulates the motion of the trampet is so arranged that the trum- pet can be made to ie es of the circle re- quired—either %0 deg., 180 deg., 270 deg., or the whole circle, 860 deg., at pleasure. At Kambro the sound only requires to be hi about one-half the circle of the hori- zon, or say 180 deg., #0 that the sector is set to revolve the trumpet balf way around and back, which it docs ‘with perfect regularity about once a minute. The engine used for the signal at Sambro is of the twenty-four inch size, as also that for Cranberry Ish ani the cost for coal to keep it rumning does not ex three cents per hour. Unlike a steam engine, it requires no water and no engineering. To fire it up "and keep it ey with coal like a house or cooking stove, is all that is required by the lighthouse nau ~ 7 ‘as the heat gives the engine its power and motion. e sound pro- duced by the trumpet is unlike other sounds, and we think no one can mistake it after he bas once heard it.
