2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Wepxespar, Sept. 20—6 P. M. ‘There has boon no relief to-day from the prevailing dulness on the Stock Exchange, and as the stagnation becomes more settled the bearish feeling incraases among the brokers and professional speculators. An almost total absence of outside support leaves the market in complete contro! of the “street,” and it is not upreason- able to look for some sinking of quotations under the load of stocks which itis now carrying. The duiness is, in other words, so stubborn as to foreshadow a decline prepara- tory to any material improvement, At tho first regular Doard Brie closed 1 lower than at the second board yes- terday, Michigan Southern 34, Pacific Mail 3. Hudson River and Quicksilver were unchanged. Reading was higher, Prairie du Chien 1%. There wasa sale of Cen- tral American Transit Company at 45. 225 was bid for Pacific Mail. ‘The fluctuations in this stock during the four last years were as follows:— —overament securities were firm at yesterday's prices. At the open , board at. one o'clock the market was steady. At the second board Reading closed 4 lower than atthe first board, Prarie du Chien 44. Erie was \ higher, Hudson River \{, Michigan Southern 36, Fort Wayne 5, Obio and Mississippi certificates, Quicksilver %. Government securities continued firm and rather active, and coupon dive-twenties of the new issue advanced 3. ‘At the open board at half past three the market was rather heavy. New York Contral 934; Erie 86%, Hudson River (b.3) 109, Michigan Southern 67%, Reading (b.8) 107%, Cleveland and Toledo 107, Rock Island (8.10) 111%, Northwestern 28, pr ferred 61%, Fort Wayne (8.3) 98, Prairie du Chien 53%, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 28, McGregor Western Railway (8.3) 1834, Cumberland 45, Quicksilver 48%. Petroleum stocks were quiet at the first board, and Pit- hole Creek closed 10. lower than at the same time yes- torday, Watson 50, Cherry Run, First National and Rynd Farm were unchanged, Manhattan was le. higher, Montana 60c., Oil Creek 5c. At the second board the market was dull, H. and McClintock sold at $5 90, Ger- mania 29¢., Oil Creek $229, Buchanan Farm 7%5c., Excel- sior $1 05, Manhattan 27c., Webster $1 58, ‘The demand for loans from the Stock Exchange con- tinues very limited, but the sapply of capital is abundant at5a6 percent, The discount line shows undiminished activity, and there is very little paper taken at less than T percent, The general rates are 7 a § for the best grado and 9 a 10 for the second, Although there is less anima- tion in the dry goods trade this week than there was dur- ing the previous fortnight, and prices have submitted to a deciine, nearly all the other branches of business are active and prices remain firm. ‘The gold market was a shade weaker than yesterday, but steady, and loans commanded 1-32 per day. The political mooting of the policy of contraction operates against any adyance in the premium, and politicians of both parties are likely to agree upon this point. The opening price was 14374, from which there was an ad- vance to 144, followed by a docline to 1435. The mar- ket subsequently closed at 143%. The export of specie by the Scotia was $335,000. The Teutonia took out none, Foreign exchange was firm. Leading bankers asked 109% a 110 for their sixty day bills, and 11054 a 110% at throo days, A letter of inquiry having been addressed to the Secre- tary of the Treasury concerning the liability of the gov- ernment to redeem the bonds issued on account of the Pacific Railway, that gentleman returned a reply, by which it will be seen that the obligation of the gov- ernment to redeem the bonds in question is fully ad- mitted. Any doubt to the contrary would have been a simple absurdity, for a bond once issued becomes as valid as a bank note, ‘The exports, exclusive of sp2cie, from New York to foreign ports for the week ending September 19 compare ‘as follows:— 1563. For the woek.... $2,646,266 $5 te 484 Previously rep'd. 124,797,724 156,519,052 111,204,350 Since Jan. 1,..$127,444,000 $161,667,536 $14,008,804 The business of the Sub-Treasury to-day was as fol- fows:— Receipts for customs. Total receipts. Subscriptions to government loan. In Cincinnati on Monday money continued to flow easy rnd was obtained without difficulty om acceptable securi- ties at 8 a 10 per cent. Loans on call were made at 6 per cent, Excbango ruled firm, the demand being in excess of the receipts, and the deficioncy was made up by ship- ments of currency or government securities, Gold came in freely, and there being little or no local domand for it was being sent to New York. The cash balance in the hands of the Assistant Treasu- rer in Boston at the close of business September 16 was. $9,731,446 74, an increase of $1,134,836 73 as compared with the close of the previous work.
